Coffee Break: Odd News, Helpful Info and Laughs for 2009

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm hoping I don't get sick, rolled my car window down leaving work yesterday, and it stuck 1/2 way back up. Coldest day of the year. Luckily I really dressed warm. DH and I played with it a while last night, but couldn't get it. In and out of the shop this morning by 9.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - can you believe the plane landing in the Hudson and everyone getting out alright?! Amazing. What a job by the pilot, crew and rescuers.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I was just saying the same thing to DH Victor! Amazing and BRAVO to that crew!!!!

Great job everyone and that means everyone. The 1st thing I thought of was a plane that landed in a river like back in the 70's and I saw a stewardess sinking in the fridgid waters, she was trying to grab the lifesaver and could not and a guy jumped in and saved her. Arghh - I can remember chuncks of ice floating around.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Been watching it since it came on air---a miracle! The pics are amazing! I love it when people come together to help and there is a happy ending

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I remember the plane that went down in January in the Potomac in the early 80's and the guy jumping into the frigid water to save someone.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Well I have to say - and this may be a little of my NYC prejudice - but if I had to be involved in some kind of accident, disaster, etc., there is no better place than NYC. Simply the best trained rescue people.

There is enough people to go around and help in New York.

To add to this thread. Not just a sore thoat. I have a Cold! 9 years of being virus free till now.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did you gargle?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Same thing here Sherrie. Started with a sore throat then turned into a head cold about two weeks ago. Lasted 5 or 6 days I think. Felt the worst the first two days. I had not had a cold or been sick for a long time before that got me either. Hope you feel better soon.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Congrats, Celeste.... not as big as they thought???

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

in -35F weather this afternoon a school bus caught on fire with the driver and students elementary kids on board they all got out but had to be outside for 40 minutes before accomodation arrived in the form of another school bus

since the city buses have been on strick for 36 days they could not help usually the closes city bus would have been rerouted to the scene taking only a couple of minutes.

I just luv heroic storys. AND NYCers are nice people too. I have very many wonderful storys about people helping while I wandered around like a stupid tourist. My best story: I went to a Yankees game. They were playing the Toronto Blue Jays (my guys) so of course I was the only one cheering for the Jays who were kicking butt BTW. The rowdy guys behind me 'accidently' spilled beer on me and laughed. I turned and asked them where they were from. New York. I asked them if they went to Toronto and the Jays were playing the Yankees who they would cheer for? They said the Yankees of course. I told them that I was born and raised in Toronto so these were my boys. After that they bought me dogs and beer and yelled out the "The Lady's from Toronto" if any one else heckled me. At the end of the game they escorted me to the subway and lectured me about subway safety and made me promise not to get off til I got back to Manhatten just like big brothers.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That sounds typical. Cool story!

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Awwwww. :) Yeah, despite being from MA, I have a soft spot for New Yorkers (lived just outside the city for eight years or so). *shhhhhhh don't tell Victor, it'll ruin my cred.*

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee.

Sandy hope you don't get any chillier down there and if you find the warm breezes could you point them in this direction.

Well just look at her. So much hair already and it looks like she will be a real heart breaker. Those chubby cheeks just call for a little pinch from grandma don't you think. Congrats to all the family.

i'm too big of a Boston sports fan to think good things about NY - and i go off campus on football an like the cowboy's which tilts me even more against NY - hate is a word i've used often to describe NY teams.

what happened on the hudson yesterday was a miracle - pilot, flight crew, passengers, and rescue teams did a great job. i travel a lot for work and can not imagine what it must have been like on that plane as it came down. wondering if we will be hearing any cell phone conversations from passengers to loved ones?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

As a Mets and Jets fan, I share some of your distaste, Bill. As a kid, it seemed kids were either Mets/Jets fans, or Yanks/Giants, and there was ot much 'common ground' between them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So Citibank is now creating a new division dedicated to-------banking! Duh!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yeah i get a lot of crap for being a cowboys fan here - been a fan since i was about 8 with bullet Bob Hayes (still the fastest human with that 8.6 hundred split in the 1960 Tokyo Olympic 400 yd relay on cinder) and Mr. Cowboy Bob Lilly - although for years the pats were a joke - now with them being perennial favorites i hear it all the time - harassing phone calls during games (well that has always gone on) or the next TO, Pacman incident, or Romo love interest - most of it is in good fun although not always. i've has a couple near misses in foxboro when the cowboys visit - always try to go with several friends for back up. all i do is cheer:)
VERY disappointed in their performance this year!!

Welcome to the world, baby Isabella. She is just too cute!!! Blessings to the whole family.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - didn't know that about Bob Hayes and the record. Yes - keeping a lower profile is advisable!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

he ran the anchor leg and came from behind to win. so it was a split time.

sometimes it is hard to keep a low profile. watching Tony Dorsett at a monday night game break it up the middle for a 55 yd. TD, or Hershel Walker run a sweep 65 yds in overtime to win - just can't sit an quietly clap.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sorry I have nothing good to say about NY teams. Although way back in the dark ages I was a Giants fan. There wasn't a local football team back then. The Patriots got going about a year or two after I discovered football. Actually girls weren't supposed to like watching football back then anyway. Never thought I would live to see the Sox win the series so got to check that item off the hope to see before I die list. Crossed off a couple more this past year with the election. Interesting how the human race surges ahead on some fronts and falls down so badly in others like the environment. Back to the NY teams, Yankees do seem to be trying to buy everything in sight that throws a ball. Should be an interesting season. Best of luck to everyone's fav team unless they are playing my teams of course. :)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Pixie--Isabella is beautiful--love the chipmunk cheeks!

Victor--When I was growing up, seemed like everyone was a RED SOX fan! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, I guess you're closer to Boston, Phoebe.

Celeste - sorry I forgot to say how beautiful Isabella is! What cheeks!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks all! That was my first response too.."look at those cheeks and that hair!! " Then I said she looked like a little red Eskimo baby and was born at the perfect time! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Funny!

Pat - can't resist!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

LOL Victor. Is that Mr Bill B.? Poor bugger got the blame but really the team lost that game the inning before. Still haven't completely recovered from that year and several almost but no cigar seasons. Like I always say though, any year we finish ahead of the NYY is a winning year and the average lately has been pretty good. :)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

OUCH THAT HURTS - went to all the games in fenway that series - proof that the best team does not always win

don't start though i have both 2004 and 2007 parade photo libraries i can fill this thread up with.
