Coffee Break: Odd News, Helpful Info and Laughs for 2009
Bill, don't forget your snow shoes! We have a lot of those larger 2-3 foot Milk and Garter snakes on our property. Between all the stone walls and the barn, they have lots of places to live and grow, and lots of rodents to feast on!
Today in history: January 19
1692: Jan Commelin, Dutch botanist and uncle to Caspar, died at age 62
Caspar the ghost?
Don't forget your snow shoes, period. We don't have a lot of property, but all we have is snowed over AGAIN.
No, Sue, that's Casper!
sue - plenty here as well including northern water snakes that can be aggresive - can you imagine walking into your yard in FL and finding a cobra or a 30ft. python eyeing a small child. not for me.
ill pass on that one and keep my four footers and will not complain about them anymore hahahah mine are black and orange and black and yellow diamond paterns and we have small ring necks pencil size but the others are interesting like the way they come up off the ground and go sideways away from me as to keep an eye on me as they go
Funny story: when I was about 8 or 9 my mother sent me up town (about 2 blocks away) to get some groceries. On the way back I saw a garter snake (maybe 6-9") on the side of the road and put it in the grocery bag. Needless to say, my mother was not too happy with me for that!
nice surprise - sounds like something my younger brother would have done
when I was about 10 I found a snake and just took it in to show my mom not know she was terrified of snakes she jumped up on the table which broke and I got myselfe grounded lol
a few years ago cleaning out the garage I found an old boot with baby mice in it so I added it the boot to the garbage bag and tied the bag not informing my husband that has a phobia of mice what I had done and told to please take the bag away so when he picked it up the mice started jumping around in the bag well the bag went flying and he ran into the house, I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants so I had to promise to be good or he would never help me clean the garage again
I think it was on a later show but a lot a creepy crawlers except from the place. But then again my brain does mix things up some times.
That reminds me of a time after church on of the boys thought they would scare me and handed me a ring neck snake. I know what it was and calmly took it but my sister in the front of the VW bug shoot out of there.
Thankfully the pythons can not survive up here gets to cold in the winter.
Anyone notice it's Sherlock Holmes's birthday today?!
I thought he was dead?
No - 8 days until my wife's though - she is celebrating by having surgery to remove a nerve removed from her foot - too many high heels
sue are you a detective:)
The humidity down in FL just KILLS Me. Not a place I'd like to live but ok to visit. We used to go to Daytona every year for bike week and growing up were down there once a year since my oldest sis lived in Melbourne.
Love how they had to give the roach a classy name...palmetto bug...too funny
DG's version! Good luck to your wife, Bill. A picture of her kicking you upon coming home to a driveay full of plants comes to mind. Wonder why.
I'm with you, Jen. FL is great from October through March. Then it's hell.
No, but I did look up his member page - he's one of us! (meaning from Penn. - NE Forum).
Cool - I did not click on the name.
Where's he been?
whew...... took me forever to get thru all the updated threads.
> Where's he been?
Sherlock Holmes?
(Hey Victor, he roots for the Bo Sox, BTW :))
Nobody's perfect, Pam.
We do have copperheads & timber rattlers here--they like rocky places & obviouly not in our yard as we had to trap out own deermice this fall. The first was 'big momma' so no more after we caught the younger ones.
We have copperheads and rattlers here too - eastern diamondback.
I hate to tell you but we have more than on type of roach!!! 3 or 4!!!! And I like palmetto bug name better the "death head" for one of the others.
I live down here and I can no longer handle the summers. I do not know if it is me but they are getting hotter and hotter. And until resent we had on had 2 hurricanes to hit our area and now we have had several each year.
Don't you guys also have some kind of HUGE frog that kills dogs?
Wren, I didn't know you had hills in northern Florida. I've only been to Orlando and Marco Island, Naples, Fort Meyers.
Real estate in Marco Island was very expensive when I was there last year. Don't know what it's like now.
So palmetto bugs are roaches? Yuuuuuck!!!! Has anyone here ever had to deal with bed bugs? I did once. Had to have the exterminator out about 3 or 4 times. This was about 4 years ago. Have no idea where I got them, but could have been at a movie theater, possibly. I was told by someone that you could get them there. They are so disgusting! Seriously, it was a very traumatic experience for me, as for months I was not convinced they were gone. They have become more and more of a problem in the US, and you can even get them in five star hotels. Some hotels have resorted to getting bed bug sniffing dogs to check the rooms after people have checked out to make sure they didn't leave any bed bugs behind.
Karen
I have read that, Karen. Can't blame you for being grossed out.
Hills in FL are bumps anywhere else!
Karen you can pick them up if you do any world travelling. One of our local pest control companies were the first to use the dog to check for bed bugs, a beagle.
Who checks the dog for fleas?
LOL!
yes on the frog but only down around Miami and there about. To cold up here for them.
But our bumps are pretty and are not miles and miles of pine tree farms, like much of our flat land.
Palmetto bugs are giant roaches that fly. It just doesn't get worse. They shook me up in my first encounter when I moved to the Keys. Ugh!
EEEEEEEWWWWW!!!!!!!!
I get news for you when all roaches become adults they can fly. I do not like the german roaches.
I don't like them no matter where they're from.
Okay, so dh comes into the kitchen and pours M&Ms into a bowl, saying they were the almond kind. After a bit I tried one. It tasted gross - like oil or diesel or something! I asked where he got them. He said they had been sitting in his plow truck for a few weeks. He tried some, immediately spit them out, laughed his head off and said it was transmission fluid! (Please come to my funeral!)
ewwwwwwww
forgot to type.....way to ruin a good M&M
