Best/Worse &What did I learnt today/Chat with Friends #78

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

It's bright and sunny with a high of 50 degrees today. Woo Hoo!

Well, Ya'll What I Learned Last Night:

Dave likes to go out on Fri nights and we have our two favorite clubs, one we've been regulars for almost 2 years and Dave's been going there for almost 3 years, the other we have incorporated within the last 6 months. The new place, Crosswalk, is an old dive with new owners and cleaned up. They have good bartenders and bouncers, and a really good, young, cute, hyper DJ that knows how to mix and dance with the crowd. The old club, Bogarts (was Boogies until recently,) has had the same DJ, bartenders, waitresses, and manager for years. We went over to Crosswalk a couple of weeks ago doing our mindless routine and the DJmanager, Josh, wasn't there, so we asked and he quit! They promoted one of the bartenders and he was playing country and old TV theme songs, like Laverne and Shirley, Happy Days, etc. Dave doesn't like country and I don't like old TV theme songs in a bar so we left and went to Bogarts early. Bogarts had an ownership change and their business died and they laid off the cutest, nicest bartender, who is my friend plus the DJ doesn't like large crowds so he sits up in the rafters and plays whatever music without knowing what type of crowd he has and won't interact with anyone. We know the whole staff very well and Dave discusses things like this with the manager all the time. Plus we have discussed this with the DJ himself. Well, when I learned that Josh quit I went into this quest to find him with no phone #, email, or anything. I have mentioned to several people that I am looking for Josh and Everyone's response has been, "Why do you want to find him, he's an idiot!" (An idiot that knows how to pack out a failing bar.) We just say that we don't care, don't know him that well, don't plan on knowing him that well, he's just fun and knows how to DJ.

Well, we were at Bogarts last night and were getting ready to leave about midnight and Josh came in with 5 Crosswalk ex-employees who we lost touch with of and were wondering where they all went! We grabbed him over to us and it turns out he has been trying to get a job at Bogarts, but they won't hire him because they have their DJ, who plays 70's rock to a 20 year old crowd and wonders why they walk out. Turns out Josh has gone to DJ school plus has a degree in Psychology. He was saying the exact same things about the place we have been saying about why Bogarts has lost their business and how to make a dance club hop. What is up with these people??? I just don't see the kid as an Idiot???? Then my bartender friend said she needs a new hairdresser, I go to this guy whose been in business for 30 someodd years, she didn't want to go to him because he's older and doesn't know the new hairstyles. What?????????? How is he in business then???

Too Much Stereotyping!!

And I wanted to say Pretty Pictures!!

Hey Crissy,
Yikes, isn't that just the way?
One would think some of these bar owners would listen and pay attention to the crowd.

I think it's real neat how you ran into the dj and other exemployees.
Too funny about the hairdresser too...Usually hairdressers are always keeping up with the styles.
Personally I think the olders ones are more on top of the styles then the younger ones.
Well, what you gonna do? At least your onto the right ones.

Well, Jacob finally finished his room. Yikes..now the fun is about to begin for Steve and me.
Jacob is now a teenager so it's time to give him shutters for his window and a teen look.
For one, we will be removing the wall paper and prepare to paint. Should be interesting.
So now I am off to begin the laundry...never-ending chore, eh.

Audrey, I sure hope you warm up...Do they sell the foot and hand warmers at the stores out there.
They are really neat little jell packets. you stick them in your shoes,(slippers) or gloves and they heat up with your body temp.
They actually keep you warm for quite a while.
Betty, How goes the quilt?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Waving, 5 minute break..chilly in here so came downstairs toput the fireplace on...even though of our of my nightie into hot bath then back into nighty again..shucks you sure don't get a laundry to do Judy when you stay in your sleepwear..lol..

Judy I was laughing when you said Jacob now a teans needs revamping of his style and room..last night Kyle spent the night at his friends home, they've been friends since kindergarden..I so hope one day I can take photo of the two..these two are the most unlikely duo friendships you'd meet...Kyle's friend is very into Gothic..omg you should see the garb on this kid and his hair..doesn't hurt anyone so that's ok..then Kyle on the other hand carries worries of the world on his shoulders as did his dad since he was born..straight laced, short hair, geek kind of looking, into cadets, that kind of stature...you see these 2 together and you just have to shake your head...

Crissy when Roger and I were younger we had a few set places we went to primarily for the music/dancing..how Roger loved to dance....we often followed bands/d.j.'s around just so we'd be guaranteed our type of music..so different now, hear music on the radio and t.v. video's and I haven't a clue what they are saying..lol..sure sign of old age...

As for the quilt Judy, one more row and I can start slicing the seams..lol...just might give it to Suzanne tomorrow...

Darlene just called, she would like to do one so with flannel on sale for $3.50 a meter (3 inches more than your yard) she says on Tuesday on her trip to town she'll pick some up and I'll give her the instructions..no real work involved just time...

Best go back upstairs, almost at my scheduled 3:30 finishing time..gee I'm good...kidding of course..must go take a headache pill..been fighting one since early morning...and no...if I stayed quiet and rested it wouldn't help...

Talk Later...

The music has definitely changed, the methodology hasn't. If you find someone you like Get Their Phone #, which me and Josh exchanged last night because he is not getting away from us again LOL! Dave is very hyper and loves dancing so we're up on all of the new music. If it weren't for him I'd be stuck in the '80's lol! It got stressful because Christy got laid off from Bogarts, Josh and his girl Alisha, and a few others quit Crosswalk's. They are the only reason we go out, without them we were lost! I told Dave we were having a crises here, and finding a new place is so difficult because you don't know the crowds or the employees and you don't want to put yourself in harms way.

You know, we were telling one of the employees, again, that we really wanted to find Josh and should've gotten his phone #. She text someone and an hour later there was the whole group!

And the hair dresser deal, I have never had a female cut my hair as good as men do, and in my opinion the more experience the better because they've had to deal with so many different types of hair.

Oh yea, because Crosswalk was across the street from the Horse Race Track in Hot Springs, we know a jockey! The season opens this week so I want to go see him race and win!

I love reading about all of your growing children and grandchildren. Brings back memories of when I was growing up.

Well, I got on DG this am and had a cup of coffee while reading, then I called my mom for our weekly call, then did the dishes, organized 2 closets, put away some Xmas stuff, cleaned a bathroom, repotted some plants I have in the house, did some of my 7 item swap, ate lunch, worked for 2 hrs, worked on my 7 item swap again, catching up on DG, then back to cleaning the other 2 bathrooms and laundry, then a couple more hrs of work...

Glenview, IL

OMG, Stacey...LOL anyone ever tell ya your suppose to rest on Sunday.
hehehe, I know, I know probably the only day you can get anything done.

wow, you've been busy. glad to see ya took a break.

I actually decided to lay down and watch my favorite ice-skating. Taping the next one for later.

Sharon is going to be thrilled with your quilt for her Betty. Such a sweet thing.
Have you watched your birds? Today I had woodpeckers!! Cardinal and the sparrows finally discovered the feeder.
I have had some blue birds as well, but I am not sure what they are called, they are not Jayes...
Great joy, I noticed I can see them from the Bathroom mirror! lol...such little things make me smile.
haha, now i just will have to keep the mirror nice and clean.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I have put about 5 hrs into making part of my 7 item swap-I am pleased with them now that I am done, but they were a pain in the toocus!!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Can't wait to see what you created Fairy..should have been doing mine, still have to pick up a few items..a couple evening this week and I'll get it done..

Now that the sewing part is done on Suzanne's quilt all but the ragging which I'll do some but will not try and finish it tonight, headache with me and don't want to turn it into a migraine, I can clean up..put sewing machine in sewing room, dust in living room after that is the snipping is done...

Judy, went and put more food out and have been sitting where I could have seen them ..only thing I see eating food is the squirrels but they have to live as well I'm sure they are hungry so maybe that's why the birds aren't here..

Michelle, Cliff and Bernice's daughter dropped in, first time since she married..she look radiant..couldn't get over that just months ago she had no hope ...

We sketched a few ideas for the curtains and canope type project I want to do..have it under control but just have to decide if I want side panels....

WIll drop in later...

Keep those projects doing..house cleaning is no fun but it has to get done!

OMG almost forgot, happy birthday Dawn...sure hope you are enjoying the day....

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I haven't done anything but take a shower, just a bit ago lol! Dave will be resting most of the day as he has to work tonight. Oh, he should find out the big changes going on at his work, rumor has it he's going to be the only expediter scheduled for graveyard as it's going to become a skeleton crew, plus they're trying to eliminate the weekend overtime, which could mean he will work Sun night thru Thurs night with Fri and Sat nights off! Woo Hoo!

That quilt is looking good Betty!

I think I'm hungry but don't know what I want.

Ooooo a huge robin in the yard with an ass up bird following it. Oh shoot, there are 13 robins in my yard! And a whole slew of ass up wren birds. They're so small and round!

Pacifica, CA

judy, wonderful santa and im soooo green look at the back yard just wonderful! and that bird was a beauty!

carol enjoyed the flower pic

betty, wow great job on that!

hello to everyone else hope your enjoying your weekend...

now i have a question for the southern gals or any of you that may know lol

for the longest time i have heard people talk about hush puppies, well today at walmart they had a mix for sale, they look and sound good! so i had to pick up one to try, now lol since i really dont know what they are concidered my question to you is.....
what meal time are they served ? and what would be the correct dishes to be served along with them?

Victoria Harbour, ON

You have me so laughing Crissy...

Victoria Harbour, ON

OMG Liz, you've got me laughing as well, here 'hush puppies' are shoes...you are not cooking leather are you?

Pacifica, CA

lol im probably spelling it wrong now i have to go get the mix

Pacifica, CA

knew it lol hush puppy

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Betty LOL!! A hush puppy is a corn bread dough ball with seasonings and sometimes corn, celery, or other veggies like that in it.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

They're served with dinner usually with fried foods in place of french fries. Let me go find my recipe:

Pacifica, CA

thanks crissy! cant wait to see

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Liz, They serve them at Long John Silvers. I just love them. Put in plenty of garlic!!!! HUGS BEV

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

And Yes Betty we have Hush Puppy brand shoes here too. These hush puppies are edible. Liz, you're spelling it right because if you have more than one on your plate, which usually about 5 to 7 is the norm. Remember ladies, I've only lived in the South for 1 1/2 years, I'm from California.

Hush Puppies are deep fried. Me personally, I don't particularly like them but Dave loves them, and I've never made them so if you have a recipe that tells how to mix, roll and fry use that. This is strictly the ingredients, and this is the only hush puppy I have liked so far.

3 Eggs
3 C Corn Meal Mix
1 C Self Rising Flour
1 Can Creamed Corn
1 Medium Onion, probably a yellow would be best
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
3/4 to 1 C Milk

Pacifica, CA

thanks crissy will print that out!
right up my alley served with fried foods lol

thanks bev will have to see if we have a long john silver

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I used to make hush puppies, too. Receipe for just a few:

1 cup self rising meal
1 cup " " flour
onion, diced
1/2 tsp sugar
1 egg
celery seeds
about 1/2 cup buttermilk
Mix, if it's to thick, add water to thin
Deep fry, or they will be oblong, which is just as good!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

They are all over CA, at least they were in Modesto. Dave's from the Bay Area, born in San Mateo, lived in San Jose, Cupertino, Redwood City, a bunch of other small towns around there, and Modesto. I don't like Long John Silver. I miss Skippers!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Liz I was going to ask Dave what restaurants serve hush puppies around there but he's asleep. He has to wake up at 8 so I'll ask him when he's getting ready.

Pacifica, CA

ok crissy not going to cook them till tomorrow..

thanks audrey

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL Now I want to cook some but I don't have any self rising flour or corn meal, so I guess that's out. Oh well, too tired anyway.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Glad we got that straightened out..just put the quilt in the washer as to fray my cuts..think I'd best go out and start the car and let it run for a few minutes so it will start tomorrow morning, no heat plug in this one...won't let it run too long, don't want a ticket for doing so...

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

That's so ridiculous Betty, especially up there where it gets this cold. I understand why they have the law, but good grief.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Doe, you are a true southerner.....
Hush Puppies are served with fried fish. I have never heard of using corn in them, but always they have diced onions and some seasoning, and are fried by the spoonful .
Fun to have with fried fish and fries, maybe some navy beans.

Liz, we used to fish often and when we had the houseboat, we would have fish fries on our dock. The fries were done first in a huge pot of oil, then they were placed in a brown paper bag, lined with a second bag so the oil would drain. Then we fried well battered fish in the same oil, do the same with them on top of the fries.
Hush puppies are fried last, and are also put on top of, or in another bag. Oh, and in between layers in the bag, lots of paper towels to soak up the oil.

Our entire covered dock would get together for fish fries. Fun and good. Betty, briefly, hush puppies are just fried bread made from meal.

Pacifica, CA

shar thanks for the idea!
and i had just gotten a bunch of paper bags,
dont know if dh will go for the fried fish tho lol
he will go to a diner and order fish and chips
omg i'll never hear the end of the smell lol
can i do fried chicken ,green beans cooked with bacon? and a pecan pie?

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Oh that sounds fun! My grandfather was a bass fisherman, we were always having fried fish for dinner.

I'm more in tune with the CA version of hush puppies, which are very plain. In the Central Valley of CA most of the elderly and now passed away (people born in the teens and twenties) migrated from the South to the Central Valley for farm work and higher pay. Modesto is full of 1st, 2nd, 3rd (me) and now 4th generation Arkies, Okies, and Texans. The more people there are the more un-southern they get. The old Southern style of CA won't be remembered much longer.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Liz, I am sure you can eat them with anything you would eat cornbread with. Because they are meal based, they work with whatever you normally would eat that type of bread with.

Crissy, I don't know, I have been to CA often over the years, but never ate hush puppies there. My husband grew up in Texas though, and we had hush puppies there everytime we had fish.
Matter of fact that's where I learned to let them drain in brown paper bags, keeps them warm, too. There are all kinds of fried bread, though, so I am sure it varies from place to place.

Now we do put corn kernels in cornbread sometimes, but have never had it in hush puppies (my kids used to call them push huppies). Also peppers if we want a sort of Mexican cornbread. But only green onions in hush puppies. Might be good with corn, though, but I would think it might not stay together when fried, dunno. You'll have to try them and let us know.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Never tried them Shar, when in USA I'll have to go in search of where they are served..have done the fries in similar method to take the grease off as well..I'm NOT a fish eater, only type of fish I eat is 'crappies' no fish taste...Tom and Jean friends of mine used to call, 'want to come over for a 'crappy dinner' lol

Mighty cold here today..did let the car run for a few minutes last night so should start this morning..know they are calling for several days with below normal temps so might have to get up during the night to start the car or just call the tow truck for a boost..

My blanket for Suzanne is done, just finishing it's 3rd wash so I can dry it and fluff up the seams..lordy it sure releases a lot of thread content..she'll be pleased as she always likes something homemade...

Will take a photo when it's out of the dryer ..must run got my hair to do, look for a birthday card in my card box..feed the animals then get ready to leave for a day of 'rest' lol

Victoria Harbour, ON

Have to wait a few more minutes for the spin cycle to finish so I can throw it in the dryer, so back for a few minutes...

Dawn said she had an almost perfect day yesterday for her birthday...always nice to be spoilt isn't it..

Shar, you did a lot of boating with DH as did I, would imagine you miss it a lot..although we re-did Roger's boat from top to bottom and refiberglassed, I don't take the Foxy Lady out much in fact hardly ever..it brings peace to my heart when I see the boys driving her but it's painful..guess it's better just to remember the memories isn't it...would think Shar your rose bushes are dormant right now..just think before long you'll be out gardening...

Any more Art Shows being set up and organized by you? would love to see some photo's..

Ah, just heard the click of washer best be moving..

Victoria Harbour, ON

OMG come downstairs for 1/2 hr. go back up and blizzard out there..yuk..

All my chores are done..nice to come home to a clean house...now waiting for the call to either go in on my own, meet Suzanne in Hillsdale or her house...

As travelling will be bad, think I might call and venture out early..sounds like a plan ...

These rag quilts are so fun to do...old looking, that's what I like..
Now I really will be looking for more flannel so I can make Jeff and the boys one..Melanie has made Greg and her boys one, so 3 less to do..lol

Talk when I get to the office...

Morning all,
Happy Belated birthday Dawn..

That quilt looks real cozy..with a country look.

I have a packaged mix for hush puppies ..my sis brought it back from Myrtle Beach for me at Christmas. I had a look at the package and it can be used to make pancakes too..
At Christmas my brother and sis and I exchange interesting food items...about 5 or 6 things..as we all are out of ideas of what to give one another. We started this last year...Since my brother flies for Air Canada to Zurich and other interesting places..I got real Swiss chocolates as one of the things in my food basket..last year I got real German mustard in a tube..like toothpaste.

Victoria Harbour, ON

What a fantastic idea Carol..yummies...licking my lips about the swiss chocalates...is the german mustard HOT...yes, when Noah looked at the quilt he didn't know how to describe it so he said 'grandma, it looks awfully old'..lol

Suzanne loved it, got a big hug..not her birthday till end of month but the cold is coming.l.saying we will have record breaking temps by the middle of the week...

Snowing lightly here in Barrie...what's it doing in your neck of the woods?
