Good idea! I never think of the forsythias until it's too late.
78 days until Spring! yay!!!!
Still a bit cold to cut forythia for forcing, but a good way to prune the bushes when it warms up.
Patti are those crocus from this year?
Sorry to say they are not. I still have over a foot of snow covering everything. Adding more today. :( Should have some melting in the week ahead though.
50 days people!!!!!!
YIPPEE!!
That little furball is gonna come out of his house next Monday and do you think any of those people will be smart enough to close the darn door behind him so he can't run back in...noooo. I mean really folks, have an idea huh. At least we are less than 50 days now, just 6 weeks tops until more than a couple days here and there of some decent weather. Have you noticed that some of the birds are starting to sing their spring songs already? Getting a head start on the dating game, that is a good sign. :)
It would help if all the camera lights were not there, so it wouldn't cast a shadow.
Either way - it's less than 50! Gosh, I can hardly wait!
One good thing about this winter - so far my gardens and the gardens on the terrace have been well insulated by the cold.
If all the wintersowed perennials I stuck everywhere trying to give them a home in the fall - well, if all of these survive, I am going to have to find homes for a lot of plants.
One of the big mistakes I made last spring was planting too many plants in the gardens. By August, some gardens on the terrace were starting to look like jungles (though it did help hide the weeds).
And there were a lot of weeds. We will have to use crab grass control this year - the lady who helped me weed broke her hip this winter, and I won't be around for 6 weeks. I can't count on anyone else, so I will have to stop as much unwanted germination as possible - of course this eliminates all possible germination of things I would like to have - like blue batchelor buttons, babies breath, and annual poppies. Oh, well, can't have it all.
The terrace has really been a learning experience. For instance, I discovered (too late) that we should have simply brought in top soil for my end of the terrace. Trying to dig up the "soil" under this grove of young oak trees was dumb.
Well, I can't do anything this year. Next year I will lobby the local parks branch to dump some top soil after I dig up the daffodils and hosta, etc.
I can relate to cramming in too much stuff. That is what happens when you want more plants than you really have space for really. Usually is okay the first year but a year or two later it is a jungle out there. This heavy snow cover at least will prevent any heaving this year. I usually don't have too much of a problem except with some heuchs, even if they are mulched well they seem extra prone to jumping out of the ground.
Now they say more snow tuesday instead of rain. I hope they are wrong and the whole thing goes out over the ocean. I am so done with winter but the next 6 weeks usually bring the most snow. At least in march it melts almost right away.
Can you believe it's been 30 DAYS since this thread started? Only 48 more to go - I can't wait!!!
oh dear.... it's only 47 days left... don't be adding extra days on please
I just checked with The Old Farmer's Almanac, and it says Spring comes at 7:44 a.m. on 3/20. The countdown calendar on their home page says 48 days. Although, seeing as most of today is gone, we can call it 47!
right - 47 and a bit it is ^_^ Gosh - that's not far now, is it?
home stretch that's for sure
Hi all, what a great thought!!! Been lost in orchids.
Tomorrow it will be 46! I'm glad Feb is short month!
booj--if Debbie comes, will you come to the iris hybridizers meeting on Feb 28?
Prolly not cause I usually have a client and a grandson on Sats. I'm not a hybridizer but I sure like to be a fly on the wall.
fly accepted if they like irises.
:)) Thanks!
yay!!!!!!! can't believe it... so happy...
Have you noticed that the days are getting longer and the sun is definitely warmer - especially if you have a nice cosy spot where the sun can concentrate (and you can get your cat to move over)?
I was noticing that despite the cold, the sky is a marvelous blue and was light until nearly 5:30 tonight.
Spring is coming. The birds are starting to switch to their spring songs, expecially the cardinals.....
WOO HOO!!!
Absolutely Deb. I was saying the same thing on the weather thread.
No birds singing today--it was cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soon we'll be making salad instead of soup!
Oh my every time I get encouraged and feel we are making progress with longer daylight and birds starting to get frisky, good ole mother nature smacks me in the head and says hold everything, it's only the beginning of feb. and here take 5 or 6 more inches of snow, or there you are another minus degree morning. They better not be lying about the two day heat wave this weekend, I don't think I can take it. How many days left? We really are getting closer right?
42!
Spring 43 Days or close, I aint counting. ‹(•¿•)› I think all of us have had enough of this weather. We are cabin fever bound. We just dream or think, Get out of the house. Go sit on your porch and listen to the wind and birds. Stroll out to your garden and see something, anything even a weed looking green. Look around and plan your next bed, container, window box or just throw something over the bank and have a surprise. I would be happy to go outside to look at my new plant being Perky and get a look that its DEAD.
Pat, right now you need to look up (at the sun) and not down (at the snow)! Cheer up, it will be in the 40's this weekend!
I am holding on to the big warm up this weekend. I just need to see some melting. Some visual sign that it will go away eventually. At least enough to be able to walk about in a different direction than a shoveled path can allow. At least it is a sunny day so that is a step in the right direction. Now if we could get the temps to match a little better I would be very happy.
I do know what you mean! My cats are very frustrated about their walks also. And, I'm getting VERY tired of cleaning out the litterbox for 4 cats!
Big break in the weather here coming on Sunday - it will be ABOVE FREEZING!
It's pretty bad isn't it when 45 degrees starts sounding like beach weather. Ha!
Please! I'll be in Maine, where it should be downright tropical at 45F!!
oh everyone! I am in such trouble... I have way too many catalogues that I finally decided to look at it... oh this is horrible... I am so tempted... I want so many plants... ah so much to choose!!!!
thank God ... less than 6 weeks now...
