Excellent dance interpretation, dahlianut. It seems to be working, as we have had some mighty mild temperatures this weekend. It makes me fear for the bulbous things' survival.
Garden Photos - Part 47
You're right to be concerned, Candyce. I have Hyacinth and Daffodils poking up through the soil. I hope they'll be okay. I remember a few years back we had a warm week in February when all my bulbs came up. Those were in containers when I had my city apartment garden. In the spring, the foliage had brown edges but the flowers were mostly fine. Should I put more soil on top of these beds? Will it prevent damage when the cold returns?
No - just leave them, Dyane. No big if it's just the foliage. If there is a freak extended warmth and they bloom, then that will be it. But that rarely happens.
I luv my greenhouse Anita. I start it up late Feb/early March for my seedlings and dahlias which I move out from the indoor grow-op. Tomatos and basils live in there during the summer and they usually finish the end of November. I'm going to try some peppers in there I think next summer.
Thanks Victor.
Great shots, Victor......love the sunset shots and the Old Man.....freaky close to the real thing!
Nice snow shots, Shelly, and cute, personable nephews!
Bill - I'm really smitten by the CBM.....gorgeous!
Dyane - your baby is beautiful! Love her expression!
JoAnn - wow......that's a lot of snow! Hope it slows down for you!
Dahlia - wonderful performance.....great form! Loved it!
Thank you, Louise. She's a character.
all nice shots... hellebore looks like little shop of horrors
thanks! lol. I'm going to have to watch that move again since it's been about 15 years. I need a refresher on those plants!
Hi guys
Nice picks RC. We had a lot of rain and really mild weather for about two days, snow is gone.
Storms begin again in a few weeks.
Nothing really doing around here, just waiting for catalogues so I can make 2009 plans.
morning JoAnn. Yep, that's pretty much what's happening around here. I don't have snow under the trees anymore, still have about 4" in the back yard, and I think that it's been raining for two days straight. I like that I whole lot better than snow, if it's not way too much.
Oh I am so jealous of all that green and color you have going out there RC. Our snow melted over the weekend so that is a good thing I guess. According to the long range weather forecast Dec. was supposed to be the coldest of the three winter months. Now that is behind us and a Jan. thaw is predicted for the second half of Jan. so that would be nice too. Doesn't mean no more snow though, just not that zero degree cold. I hope they are right about it.
The photos were grand---Dahlianut--so clever! Do you have your dahlias chosen for the new year? I'm looking, but have not been bowled over by any in the catalogs, yet---one yellow caught my eye. I'm going to get a prize at the fair this year---HeeHee--that's my mantra every year---doesn't happen!
Very nice sunset shot, Victor.
Feed me, Seymor! LOL! Nice shots, Shelly. What is that foliage plant? I wonder if it would grow in zone 6. Sure is pretty.
Dahlias, hmmmm....mmm.......... maybe I'll order a few this year. You may have convert on your hands. I will never get rid of my daylilies, though! Never!!!!
Karen
Robin of course you will win a prize for your dahlias this year. We will cheer for you. After great deliberation, I have chosen my new dahlias for next year. It is so hard to choose when you MUST HAVE so many. Nutsfor, you could always try of the shorter dahlias which don't take up so much room. But WARNING! DANGER! you will get addicted.
Addicted? Me? LOL!!!!
Wow - looks like signs of spring already, Shelly. Micro-climate??
I agree completely schicken!
Victor, I forgot to mention that I loved the sunset picture. Ahhh the sun!
Ngam, thanks! I really don't know that it's all that much to be jealous of though! of those pics: one is in a greenhouse, one is inside the house, one is outside in the snow, one is outside - but not at my place, and just one is outside and not in snow. we are finally unthawing as well, but now we are/may flood. weather folks said that we need to hope to cool down again. :-/ They said that the snow is the better alternative. so, I guess it's just wait and see!
Karen, the foliage plant is cyclamen hederifolium. It's hardy to at least zone 5. so you should be able to grow it if you want to. They are a little finicky about drainage. they require good drainage. Usually some nice, light, fluffy, soil will accomodate that just fine.
sorry victor, but no micro climate thing going on. the weather is storming right now. Branches hitting windows, rain sideways, etc, etc. and only about 40 deg.
Hmmm.... Another plant to add to my collection. I had one, but it died. It was right next to my pond, so maybe it got too wet.
Karen
there should be more blooms here next year and a better veggy garden. with three lost 100 ft white oaks and the two 70 ft+ maples i cut down the last couple of days. i had to drop the maples through the burning bushes - tied two back and dropped them perfectly - boy was i lucky!
i did cheat a bit on the second one which was much taller - had a rope tied to it and was back in the woods pulling it down. did not have the nerve to be standing under it when it went.
and if the snow is not too bad tomorrow the big maple to the right that's canopy is leaning to the right will be next. of course i am dropping it to the left so i'll have more rope up there and will be pulling it down to the left out of harms way. - just need to make sure i get the rope high enought. if it goes down to the right it will be bad.
Wow what a difference now with the clearing.
You have been one busy dude! Whew!
What are you thinking of putting there, Bill? I know you have JMs--I found several I like in the catalogs, but not sure of hardiness. I need to get all of my ornamental grasses that form seedheads out of the back garden--The airedale got a seed in his paw & it abscessed---I'm not sure what I'm going to put there.
Great work, Bill.
OMG Robindog is he/she ok?
Oh - that's terrible, Robin. Lots of great shrubs to choose from, Robin. JM's should be fine for you.
i have a plan - probably a jm and maybe something else- first need dirt to build a raised bed. another 20 yards again.
Nice, Bill! Gives you sunlight to play with and room for other plants.
Karen
great work there Bill! The new sunlight will be nice!
Sorry to hear about your pooches paw there Robin, that's never fun. I agree with Victor, lots of interesting things that could be planted in their place.
You guys have given me a lot of new ideas to try out next season. Thanks.
