Best/Worse &What did I learnt today/Chat with Friends #76

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Morning everyone,
Sharron..wow Ethan is growing up ..you have two handosme lads there..
I remember he loves Star Wars...and you have such fun playing together.
Happy New year to all.
I will be having aquiet New Year's Eve. It is my DIL birthyda today so I will go over and have dinner and cake and give her her gift..then probably fall asleep on the couch watching the count down..LOL

Got a nice invite to an open house at one of my neighbour's for tomorrow. They wrote a story about how this was done many years ago when people dropped in for a visit on New year's Day..and how they would like to revive this traditon..they just put the invite in our mailboxes..so that should be interesting.

Betty you have done an excellent job on the Scoot cover..looks professional..Doug must be so pleased.

I went shopping with my friend Sheila yesterday..bought a long black skirt to wear to a party on Jan 3rd. I have to see which top I have that suits it best..it is a crepe material.

We had a bit more snow overnight..

Happy New year everyone.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Break time...started the grout and wouldn't you know, ran out of grout for about 8 tiles, so had to wait for Home Depot to open..got back and Doug was sitting in the truck, couldn't believe I'd already been to town...he put 6 new supports on back deck to hold the plastic I have so as not to have to shovel the back deck and put all my pretties away...we've come up with a plan for the fall with regards to enclosing it properly..was headed to do that this fall but not sure what happened, didn't get done..learnt my lesson, truly I did..

Just finished the last of the un-grouted tiles, must leave it for 1/2 hr. before I remove excess then another job finished...

I'm debating with myself as to going into Midland and looking at wallpaper Tripps has (am sure it's more $$$) or take the time and travel to Barrie and look at Color Your World..it would give me something to focus on today and tomorrow..after all I do have some travel $$$ left to spend..lol...not doing 100% so must fight to keep above board...do have my blocks cut out, could also play with that...

Carol..I remember as a child everyone travelled to each other's home on New Years Day,probably even more so than Christmas...how nice for you...I also will be going out on Jan. 3rd. as Melanie is having a 40th birthday party for Greg...

Usually on New Years' Eve they go out as a family..haven't heard what their plans are as yet..for me it will be a quiet evening and day tomorrow...Jeff, regardless of where he is always calls at 12:00 am ..not sure what his plans are either...

Best go back upstairs and tidy the washroom and kitchen..got to make a mess to make nice right? had to take off my blouse as I had more grout falling from the ceiling tiles on me than in areas that needed grouting...

Carol, am sure you have many beautiful tops to go with new skirt..maybe I will go to the mall in Barrie where Color your World is and look for something new I can wear to Greg's, not that I need something new...lol...

Not snowing here Stacey but it is extremely cold..infact tips of my fingers are still frozen from helping Doug and bringing totes to back storage shed...

Back on next break..lol

It is about 0 w/ the windchill right now-BRRRRR;)

Have fun today Betty whatever you decide!! I ned to go home and do some deciding on my wood patterns and hopefully my correct saw will be here-WEEHAW!!!

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

Yes, Stacey, and you want me to move where? Maybe you should move HERE since I have not had quite the nasty time of it that you have. We got snow last night and this morning but it is the fluffy stuff that looks pretty but doesn't cause as many problem. Jan and Linda came home last night; were in Dayton at 6:00 and hoped to be home by midnight. Don't know what they ran into.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Well, when you retire, you won't really have to go anywhere, so if it is bad weather one day, you just stay at home and craft:) And when I get off work, I will come join you!!LOL

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL You have an answer for everything, right?

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Na-but most things;)LOL

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Stacey..not having to drive to work in a snow storm or on icy roads is one of the best things about being retired.
This will be my third winter being retired..so nice just to look out the window..and stay warm and safe inside.

Betty..hang in there..try not to think about the past..think of it as a beginning of a whole New year..

Hugs,
Carol

Morning Betty, and everyone else. Looks like you all are staying so busy. Betty, you are tiling, and sewing covers, and deck projects!!! Next is wallpaper? I wish I had your energy!
We will have company for the week-end. My DIL, and granddaughter. If we make it till midnight, we will shoot off a few fireworks. We have to be careful, as it is so dry here. No rain for months. We put out the sprinklers for our yard yesterday, but the neighbors are so close, so we have to watch out for them also. I am making a Turkey for New Years dinner tomorrow.
Happy New Years to everyone!

My third winter, too, Carol.....and though we don't have bad weather, it is nice to not be forced to go anywhere. When I taught, I was worse than the kids hoping for a snow day so I didn't have to get out in it. Trouble with that is that my school system always waited till the last minute to announce that school was cancelled, and by that time I was up and dressed and ready to go.

Betty, I know this time of year is tough for you, but I painted my way through Christmas, and I suspect you will probably find the same kind of thing to do through this week. Hobbies are a good way of handling things that bother us. I got a gift card to a major bookstore for Christmas, so this afternoon I am going to spend the entire thing and read my way through tomorrow....we just do whatever we have to do, don't we?

Carol, I might have showed this to you, but here is Ethan and me at the same age, and now....sometimes he looks a little like his dad, but his dad looks more like my husband looked, and not so much like me. Anyway, here's the pix, and sorry if you have seen it before...

Rats, forgot that one was so little...anyway, it gives you an idea.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Oh..sweet...no I hadn't seen it before..
Kind of hard to see the part when you were a child because of the copyright.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I'll see if I can find another that hasn't been made smaller.

Hello all, thanks for the kind thoughts...

Just after my last post I decided to call Cathy, she's the lady that cuts my grass every week and won't take $$$ so asked her if she'd like to go to Barrie to the Marketplace Buffet as she's never been...we left at 10:30, of course my purpose going to Barrie was twofold..look for wallpaper..went to Color Your World and there wasn't a whole lot but there was one print that would have looked so pretty, more of a vinyl..so picked it up, got to the till, took my $$$ out when the young man said the 4 rolls had 3 different dyelots..asked if they would discount them, for me it really didn't matter because it's in a hall and cut up by 4 doors so you'd not have noticed especially as you couldn't see any difference anyway..he said they would give me 10% off but the more I thought of it, what if I didn't have quite enough and he did say it was a discontinued pattern..2 other Barrie shops that sell wallpaper have now gone to picking your paper out of a pattern display book and they order - 3 week waiting time..shucks didn't they know I'd be wanting to wallpaper tomorrow???? hmmmm....

Knew there were 2 places in Midland, we arrived at one and same, order by book, the second place closed at 1:00 pm because it's New Years' Eve...how could they..don't they know not all want to go dancing???? hmmmm

Guess the good Lord was telling me I wasn't going to wallpaper, I'm going to rest...

Stacey and Janice - you two are sooo cute...I'm so glad I got to meet you both..hope by next Christmas you'll both live around the corner from each other and will enjoy your crafting projects...

Carol, have you been to DIL's yet for her birthday..when I was at Marketplace Buffet I checked to see if they are open tomorrow..with Greg turning 40 thought why not take the family there..not sure though, with the bit of snow and the cold we've had I'm sure they'll be snowmobiling..no better gift for Greg than to snowmobile..will call later to find what the schedule is...

Linda Kay, how spectacular to be able to have fireworks to bring in the new year...

Shar, there is such a resemblance ...uncanny...yes, I could lose myself in a painting project..have a beautiful tray to paint an array of poinsettia's on as well as several other unfinished projects..might have to do that..

So cold, might just go have a warm bath, get into jammies, get the paints out and basecoat and trace pattern on...great suggestion..

Victoria Harbour, ON

oops..finished tile grouting..now don't you all be looking for the tiles that don't quite me meet..must remember old homes do not have square walls...lol...

Carol and Gillian, "M" on the Canadian thread posted the following, sure she won't mind my posting here...

WHY I LOVE ONTARIO

When it's Christmas time in Ontario
And the gentle breezes blow,
About sixty miles an hour
And it's twenty-five below.
You can tell you're in Ontario
'Cause the snow's up to your butt,
And you take a breath of Christmas air
And your nostrils both freeze shut.
The weather here is wonderful,
So I guess I'll hang around,
I could NEVER leave Ontario
My feet are frozen to the ground!

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

That is a good one Betty..
Tile looks nice..
Just got home from DIL's birthday..ate too much..but ohh it was all so good....don't think I will see midnight..
Happy New Year everyone.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Happy New Year to all as well, may 2009 be everything to everyone which will meet our needs and wants...

I watched t.v. off and on, went to bed just after midnight..wasn't into doing much, feeling sorry for myself I guess...enough of that...

It's Greg's 40th birthday today, got to sit around and NOT call till at least 9 a.m. as I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate an early call...

Carol, love the photo..what do you have planned today?

Done numerous things so far this morning, packing some of the Christmas decorations in totes and now I'm off to work some on the rug quilt...

Can't really go outside, it is so cold you barely can see out the windows..even the furries didn't want out this a.m.

Want to tell you all how very special you are to me, each and everyone of you...do enjoy your day, will drop in from time to time....

God Bless...

Hi Betty,
Going to an open house ..at a neighbour..just a short drop in visit about 2:30 pm.

Then dinner at my younger son's home in Oshawa.
I took my upstairs decorations down yesterday.

I hope you can get through this day with acceptance. I am thinking of you.
Hugs,
C

Sorry Carol, knew you had plans for the neighbors, reviving an old tradition..

Love Michele's jacket..teal suits her..goodness you look young enough in that photo to be 49...

Ruby your son has a special day today as well, did you find a restaurant that is open New Years...I was surprised when I was at the Marketplace in Barrie yesterday that they will be having an all day Brunch buffet...

Waiting till 9am and it seems forever to call Greg, if not plans for today as she's planning his 40th on Sat. I'll offer to take them to the Marketplace..

Just finished putting wire on the golf piece I did for him that he was trying to steal..lol...pick up something for Sat. and maybe an outing today..that's about it for me..

Happy new year-I went searching yesterday for a way to have all my ribbon organized, but out so I can see what I have and this is what I came up with....I think they will work well until I can get DH to hang a dowel from the ceiling for me:)

I also hit up some after Xmas craft store sales and got some stuff to do for next year:)

Today is craft and lazy bum day;)

Thumbnail by Fairy1004

Hey Vicki..
wishing you the same..cute pic..

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Great idea Stacey..

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks Carol-if you are like me, I have 2 baskets full of ribbon that I can't see and when I look in there, I have ribbon falling all over the place, so I needed something....

Victoria Harbour, ON

Stacey you just gave me an idea for my back storage area, could cut a square i.e. 4" x 4" with a cut out so that a dowel could easily be removed and hand all my ribbon on the dowel for easy access but more so to know what I have in stock..tks...

House looked tidy and pretty done in Christmas color, since my last post I've filled 9 totes and still could use another 5 or 6..1 tote was smashed, guess when I bought them all on boxing day they were stacked inside each other and I never thought to look...oh well, if they don't take it back i could still use it for something..

Waving Vicki..how was Christmas for you..did you get some rest?

As I pack a tote I bring it into back storage shed..thank goodness with the melt down I have easy access..now that everything is gone from upstairs area I have to go in search of what was orginally there...sometimes Stacey when you think it's a lazy bum day that's when you get energetic..

Sister Sharon just called, of course not a lot she can do because of her back so she told me I'm just to energetic for my own good, get a book, sit and read...

Apparently she, ex, a friend and her daughter who had a baby at 15 are meeting this afternoon to talk to Rhonda to talk about the future...

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

What kind of goodies did you find at the craft stores? I picked up a couple of things but don't want to store too much.
I guess I have to take down the decorations today. Kind of hate to since no one has been here to see what I have up and it always looks so bare after Christmas.
Last night was fun; just 6 of us for a light dinner and then table games after. We even managed to stay up until after midnight; got home about 1:00 to a happy dog. We even had lei's ?, hats, noisemakers, too.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I got some ribbon, some paints, some houses, some paper mache, some other wood stuff, some rub ons-all kinds of goodies!! Spent about $20 each at HL, Michaels, and the other craft store here, Crafts 2000:)

You are most welcome Betty-one of mine worked perfectly, the other I don't think I had enough glue on, so I put more glue on and trying again-I used a piece of styro w/ a hole in it and something heavy on that to anchor the dowel to keep it straight as the glue dries...

Here is 1 full one, I shoulda got 3 sets as 2 aren't enough:(

Thumbnail by Fairy1004
(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Each set with the dowel & the heart cost me about $1.50-not too bad huh??

I had asked for a set of shelves for Xmas to grow plants on and instead I got a reg set of shelves to help organize my area-this is organized if you can believe it!!LOL That is on the left, there is another set of shelves to the R of that one with bill stements and such, then another set of shelves to the R of that with seed stuff and other impotant documents and scrappbooking stuff on it, then my tabel of other drawer sets for organization;) Not as neat as Betty's gimongo room, but trying to work with the area I have;)

Thumbnail by Fairy1004
Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

Your really getting organized arn't you? Now you can just craft up a storm since you can find things. Next you can come over and organized my rat's nest of a an office.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Happy New Year!!!

Good job on that project Betty, it does look professional.

We had Dec 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28 off but back to work last Monday and I've been swamped with end of year crap. We're off today and back to work tomorrow (ug)

I love the pic of you and your daughter.

Well, at least you'll be more organized lol! My organization skills consist of a big pile in the floor.

We were sick on Christmas too, Dave had Walking Pneumonia and I've had a monstrosity of a head cold. We went out last night though, had some awesome black eyed peas! I want to go back tonight and get more LOL

I want to start some embroidery that my dad's girlfriend sent me (she sent the iron on things) but I don't have any material to embroider, so I don't know what I'm going to do, and my imagination isn't very good at coming up with ideas.

You know, I know more people who get things they ordered, if you will, and have it sent via mail and it gets "lost" and shows up at the intended address opened. I've got to wonder why things get opened when it's going through the mail system????

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Fairy and Betty,

That is a really good way to store ribbons. Easy to see and easy to use.

If I may offer another version of this-----using the same idea, just install the dowel under a shelf. It will now be horizontal.

So you can add and remove ribbon spools, "hang" the dowel at both ends using cup screws (the ones that look like a question mark). That way you can slide the dowel out of one of them and add/remove a spool and then slide the end back into the hook.
Just make sure you have extra space at the ends (or one end) to allow the sliding out of the dowel.

I have my spool/curling ribbons stored that way. Just went and took a picture of it. Please ignore the clutter---this is in my storage area by my freezer.
