Another wittle tip. If you'd like to put your "real" first name so it will show up on your post. You know so people can call you by your name instead of Dave's name. Go into your member info page and edit it where you put your dmail name and all. Where you hafe your city and state, put your name at the end of that. When you post, your name will show up. Pagancat did hers that way, you can see what it looks like above where she posted. (I did explain it right didn't I?)
Propagation: Propagation: part IV based on my own experienc
It is kitty ears, till ya down load, Dave, but you did it,. LOL ^_^
Sorry Lorraine. I just got to him first, Funny!!!
Dave I am interested, in the heat mat. But my GH is a cold frame style, so to speak and very small. I was wondering if the mats would help to warm the GH too? The diff. between us is I am a zone 8 and you are a 6. so my GH is warmer no matter what. My GH is kinda a sad little thing as of now, will be bigger next year.
But this is it. All made from scrap expect the paneling.
Kitty ears at 10 paces???
Yes the heat mat will help warm the GH. I would go for a cable on an unusual shade area. I am planning to use Jim's plan on top of a bench in my Gh. I am buying the 48 ft cable that has a built in thermostat. I am hopeful that it will raise the temps in the GH by 10 degrees.
One thing we all here in the prop thread are is good at scrounging up the things we need to have to make what we want to cover the project. then we start modifying our plan and make it prettier. I have the most trouble with my supplies. Its always a jumbled mess. Oh well .LOL
Dave
The real only mod I want is bigger and a semi warm place to work in it. My GH will be expanded 8' out, with heat someday LOL I need to find a Heater with a therm. that will work with a thermostat to keep above 40'.
Tilly you might like what charlies has. here is the link for their heaters. I agree there is nothing worse than a cold spot to work in and then add water to it and instantly its gone frome uncomfortable to miserable. Brrrr. Unfortunately my wife won't ever allow me to heat mine. well we shall see. specifically when I add my heat cable ... LOL If it works well I might add more to pump up the temps. I really need to get a minamum maximum thermostat so I can really see how my changes work. Well it sounds like a good request for Santa. so what does everyone want santa to bring them?
We bought ourselves the latest lcd tv 46" 1080i 120 mhz refresh rate with a blue ray player. Boy i never thought movies could be that realistic.
Dave
HI Everyone, I have been missing you. I haven't had a chance to stop in lately. Hopefully things will slow down a little now. I have a clear calendar after friday. Yipee.........
I don't have anything started right now except some brug cuttings, but I am hoping to change that. We are having lots of rain today and then tomorrow night our temperatures will fall again. I really need to get busy and seed some flats for the cold frame. Hope all is well.
I could use a heating cable for Christmas too..............
Linda
I am planning to buy one for myself. its such a special thing I don't trust santa to get it right.
Linda I am glad you are all right I was starting to wonder about you. I have about 100 dl seeds soaking for tomorrow's planting. I hope the crosses give me something good to share with everyone.
Dave
I WANT A GREENHOUSE!!!! Just wanted ya'll to know that. lol I"m so jealous of all you with any kind of greenhouse.
I keep rooting stuff like I have good sense and have taken over an extra bedroom in my house. You ought to see the mess. I'm gonna take a picture so you all feel sorry for me. he he. I should be committed.
Tilly your gh is wonderful!! I love the shelving you did. Very nice. I would take yours any day.
Jeanette
Lorraine, have you looked for a GH on Craig's List? That is where we got mine. It is a 10x12 (I think) glass Eden, and we paid about $500 for it .I bought an oil heater and I keep it about 40 at night, and it is usually about 55 to 60 on a sunny day.I don't have water and elec in it yet (next year's project), but I have an extension cord and a hose! I scrounged around looking for cast offs for shelving, concrete blocks. closet wire shelves, etc. DH hates to take me to the dump, I always bring something back!
LOL you are our kind of frugal grower. I always watch ebay for other people because I got mine there its a rion 8 x10 retaild $1600.00 got it for $500.00 and pick up in hot springs.
dave
What I need is more space to put another greenhouse. Of course fixing up the cold frame would help tremendously. Hubby wants me to sell the birds so he can turn the aviary into a green house. Anyone want a bunch of birds? LOL
Not lilely Ibartoo. I would like them but my S/O has a phobia against them. No chickens etc.
Jeanette
No birds for me either. I am looking for another GH, also. I have outgrown this one already. DH is very creative, maybe he can figure out a way to make an "addition" to it.
Somebody could donate one to me HUH Please LOL
Hmm birds .. nope none for me d/w has a phobia of them as well. Home made greenhouses can be done in pvc or fence rails. the fence rails are shaped with a bender and they can be found on ebay with the plans to build a hoop house. I think the bender was a bit over $100.00 now the fence rails I have no idea on cost.
Linda you might get away with a pvc house because of the up and downs in temp you get. I am thinking of doing one along the side of our house for my inventory. Just enough to keep the hard bite off but cool enough for the dormancy needed by some plants.
Advance warning:::: We are due for a long rain/ice/frozen rain/snow next week. we may be without power for a few days so If I disapear for a few its because of the A#%& frozen stuff. We went out and got a generator tonight so we will be able to stay warm and have tv. But hey who knows whats going to really happen. I hope to post the next segment on starting the small business from home by monday.
Dave
Well I hope it doesn't get that bad for you. Thats no fun at all. been there done that. But thank goodness it was still warm weather when it happened. We got the tail wins from IKE and we were with out electric for 11 hours, and i can't imagine being without it for that lenght of time let alone as long as some of you have had to do it.
We're supposed to get an Arctic Blast tonight or tomorrow (forgot which). It has been blowing like the dickens all day, raining cats and dogs, and it is supposed to snow tonight. My DIL, who lives in town about half an hour away, just said it is snowing there now. Darn, I still have some plants I should cover up.
I am interested in your home business also. I am fairly new to DG and propagation, so I have been listening in to your posts. Love it.
Flowerfancy, You can make a GH, Honest...
Mine is made from a old dog kennel and junk found, the only thing that is store bought was the clear paneling and the screws.
So far the weather here is windy and lots of rain and not real cold.
Hope you all fair well.
tilly we have a small one that belonged to my FL and it is setting in a jungle of weeds right now and we just have to wait until the weather warms up b4 we can get out and drag it out. And when I say weeds I mean weeds. Wild honeysuckle vines and all that kind of stuff has grew up and around it, and we will have to replace the glass in it too, most of it has been broken out.
Hmmm, sounds like a project that should have been done this summer.
Tilly, do you guys get much snow? I wouldn't think. My daughter's in-laws live in Bremerton.
We got about 10 or 11 inches last night. Very dry and the temp is in the low 20s so it will be here a while. Especially since it is supposed to be in the sub zeroes this next week.
Jeanette
our warmest day beyond tomorrow if friday ... a balmy 38 degrees brrrr... I hate the cold
Dave
You should move south Dave. I do like the 4 seasons myself.
Jeanette
Unfortunately I am as far south as dw will allow the heat gets to her and My parents are here soI will be here a while. All things considered I would love a couple of acres in south florida in the outer fourty to do a nursery. hire a couple of good workers and make it a go. but hey thats what dreams are for.
Dave
I guess. Jeanette
Yeah I have to say it should have been a summer project but I didn't decide that I wanted to do the flower gardening thing until we didn't have the time to get it out . We have been clearing out trees and around the lake cleaning it out and all that good stuff and we are old people so it takes us awhile to get things done.
LOL, me too FF. Guess that will be next year's (summers) project. Besides all those weeds need to be cleaned out anyway, don't they?
I'm pretty good at telling other people what to do aren't I?
Jeanette
Jeanette,
Where in Bumbertown LOL Old joke LOL How long has she lived there?
We have flurries going on now, but I don't think it will stick. I have been here for over 25 years and have seen some bad ones, but most years are mild couple of inches and then gone in a couple days. I am in what they call the conversion zone, which is a area in the upper part of the sound that the jet stream likes to move around and makes the weather act differant. It could be snowing real bad in area and 4 miles the other way they have nothing or the other way around.
I commute on the ferry to go to work, which means I ride the ferry to go 21 miles across the sound it takes 40min. ( I could drive it in less if we had a bridge) I can leave my house and its just raining. get off the ferry on the other side and hit 3' of snow. be there done it LOL Its hard to explain to those who don't know Wash.
when DH was working he put in a lot of hours and didn't feel up to doing hard labor after he got home and then on weekends is about the only time we saw each other cause I worked nights ,so it really made it hard for us to get anything done. Now that he has retired I guess we can get it done now, but just slower LOL. Yea we didn't think about th GH until we decided what we were going to do. And yes the weeds are coming out , it is way out back and will be part of what we will be clearing out, this next spring. We are trying to reclaim so of the ground here that has been grown up for years, long b4 we moved here. Part of the ground we live on was pasture land and we had to clear it b4 we could even get our trailer moved in here , so we had had a big job, and still working on it.
LOL, Flower, I am so on the same wave, but the other way around. My DH is retired has been for 4 years but has no clue when it comes to plants. I'm still working, and late nights to boot. so we don't have the time to work together on the projects I want to do and he will not touch anything without me. (thank goodness) LOL
Well a lot of the work I just set and supervise LOL I have to be careful as I can't lift anything heavy because of my back, but do what I can to help him. Now when it comes the time for the planting he helps me, digs up the ground and gets it ready and then I do the rest. Then we try to work together on the other stuff. alot of the clearing we have been doing is mostly getting rid of some scrubby trees and wild honeysuckle that has taken over oh and wild grapes too. now that is the job just getting rid of the grape vines. this place is loaded with them. some of them are as big around as I am and that is saying alot LOL
Wow. That is a chore. Would love to see some pics.
We did some treads on tours of are yards on the PNW and more to come to past the winter.
This is mine.

Very nice Tilly, a lot of work huh?
My daughter's in-laws live on the water. That is all I know. I have never been there. And they have lived there forever. I am not sure if my SIL was born there or not, but he is over 50, so don't know. That is not very nice of me is it. Just thought about it.
And yes you guys it does take a lot of work. I bought my place before I had surgery on my hip which messed it up so I haven't been able to do anything on it and my SO is not the type for yard or garden work. He does help me some, but believe me if I hadn't screwed up my working parts it would be a lot better. And if I had been in this condition at the time, I would never have bought this place.
My one salvation is that it is almost all wooded/forest so keeping the area around the house natural, fits. Suits the rest of the surroundings. I have a hoophouse that I grow my tomatoes and cucumbers in using strawbales, and I have a perennial garden near the house.
If I didn't have so many trees blocking the sun I would find room for a greenhouse. But my property is very mountainous and I have had it logged twice but I don't want to take more trees out because they are a good shelter. Sun in the summer and cold in the winter.
Jeanette
Well you wouldn't want to see it right now, it is a mess ! There is still brush laying down the hill toward the lake that we didn't get cleaned up and everything is so bare right now. We got trees out at the end of the trailer that we cut but the grapevine is holding them in place yet and we even cut some of the vine to get them out but they are still standing there. There is just so much of it that it won't let them fall, ran out of time so they will just have to stay that way until we can get back outside again. no promises but will try to get a few pics so you can get an idea of what it looks like here. It is just beautiful here in the spring and summer .
You be careful when you cut those vines. You don't know which way those trees are going to fall. That is a pretty dangerous job.
Jeanette
Jeanette is correct. it may just take one small vine and then boom its on the ground. I like to make an escape route in my head before I do something that may end up on top of me.
Tilly it sounds like the weather we get. today 70 tomorrows high 22 BRRRR... Its funny how just a few blocks can make a difference in snow vs ice vs rain... and of course the weatherman says we may get some of all 3 in the next day or so and all week long. It would be nice if they were wrong and we got a small shower and nice warm days. I don't think its gonna do that though. I believe they are saying something about an artic front coming down from washington through the rockies and into our backyard ... but they can't be sure about the neighbors... rip boom ... Yea I know bad joke... LOL sorry being a bit silly I don't know if its the pain or the meds oh well its nap30...
Dave
Oh the trees are small ones but there is several of them. They would make good bean poles LOL. Not to worry ok. We are expecting ice by tomorrow morning. 1/4 to 3/4 inches. sounds bad and I have a DR .appointment about 50 miles away and I don't think I am going to try it if it is to bad when I get up in the morning.
I would not risk it. I have found most dr's understand about weather.
Oh my DR is understanding, he is a very nice person . I would just have to reschedule it as soon as possible though.
