Greetings:
Hopefully everyone has made the transition from part 3 to here. If you are new to this thread we operate kind of loose on topic sometimes it gets off subject but I do try to keep it on point for the most part. I highly recomend reading parts 1,2 and 3 as there is some good information that we have tried to break it down so that everyone can understand what we are talking about. The only dumb question is the one we fail to ask. Hopefully we will be covering some info on hybridization.

Jim:
I have a question. What do you look for when you are hybridizing a new hosta cultivar? How do you determine what the new cross will look like or is it all just luck of the draw and let mother nature figuire it all out? I would think it would be more to it that just cross a few flowers and hope for the best.
Dave
Well I guess everybody is busy doing something. You got no one here yet except me
Its a good start.
I'm here too Dave, guess we are all just busy. I went into the hospital on Tuesday a.m., had my surgery and got out Thursday afternoon. I guess I won"t know if it was worth it, i.e. success, for about 3 months. Long time to wait huh? Anyway, about all I am doing right now is watering.
I did send you some seeds Dave, did you get them? Might be too soon. I also have a whole batch of seeds that need cleaning which I should be able to do sitting down. LOL I will let you know what I have after I am done.
Jeanette
Jeanette:
I have yet to recieve them. I have a ton of seeds coming in. I probably messed up but I did it anyhoo. Bought a bunch of hosta seeds on ebay. Got silly one evening oh well the meds were kickin pretty hard and I was wanting some of all of them. Any one here have the same desire? "I'll take 2 of each please" LOL
I have a huge wish list from shady oaks. cool site with new hostas. and I want two of each. Go figuire. Lots of daylilies in the other day too. I am hopeing jim can fill in the blanks on the whole dominant resesive trait so I can understand it.for my daylilies.
I got out and watered today myself. we are getting rain tonight with fluffy stuff in the am. I am down to every 3 or 4 days and had to get it done. I have impatients in bloom in the gh. I find it kind of strange everything is droping leaves and the imps are blooming their behind off.
Dave
Dave, you know we'll never let you lose us. What would be do without you telling us how to do stuff. EVen if we don't listen half the time and mess up.
AAJeanette, I've been off in my own little world the last few days. Didn't know you'd been in the hospital!!! I gotta get on the ball and keep up with stuff, I"m sorry. But I am glad you are ok.
Dave, where did you get the hosta seeds. I want to get some. I have so many hosta's and have no idea where the seeds are. I have all these big ole blooms, but can't find the seeds. Jim, can you give me a lesson? Figure with the hosta in your name, you'd be the hosta guy.
So what are we learning now?
I'm gonna go look at that wholesale site, so I can help you pick stuff out, lol!
Hey Dave, I'm here. Spent a day in ER. I though it was really bad the way I felt, but all is well now.
Love Jim's Hostas, I don't know if I could do it. I do real good with Hellebore's seeds, all mine have come from a DGer in England. I have 30 just waiting to pop their little heads soon. And one of my own (new at collecting seeds from them) and most of mine are babies yet.
First bloom taken 11-17-08 Of 'Snow Bunting'
Tilly, do you put pouches on your helebore blooms? If so, when do you put them on? I haven't been paying any attention to mine so have never collected the seeds. Hopefully, this year I can get out there and put some on and catch the seeds.
Jeanette
I managed to get some seed this year off a giant blue hosta(most likely blue angle or mamoth) my mother had at her lake retreat. They form on the flower spike. It kind of easy to spot once the germination takes place. The trick is getting them pollenated.
Jim does a hostas pollen shut down viability at a specific temp like tomatoes do?
Jeanette and tilly I am glad you got through the medical stuff without any big issues. Its a scarry thing to go into the hospital for anything these days.
Dave
Ok all you smart people, help me out. How do you know if you should scarify seeds? Sometimes info tells you whether or not to do it, but most times not. If they are larger seeds with really hard shells should I just take it for granted and scarify it. Don't want to ruin a bunch of seeds, but figured surely there is a "general answer"
Heeeeellllllpppppp.
Well I have a question too. What does it mean to scarify and then stratisfy?
I don't recall where I found it, but there is a very informative seed database on the internet somewhere that lists hundreds of seeds and the recommended process for each. Perhaps someone can tell you where to find it. It is in an excell file and I could email it to you if you want.
Bill, that would be wonderful. I'm driven my self crazy with this. But I would love you to email it. My email is Gladecraft@aol.com
Scarify or stratisfy. Scarify is to nick it or sand it, sratisfy is to soak in water. I didn't spell that right. This site needs a spell check. I'm getting old, can you believe I used to teach English and HIstory to poor innocent children. LOL
By the way, Bill, love the name. I have a son and grandson named Bill. Course I call them Billy. Can't understand why they would rather be called Bill. he he.
Lorraine I believe stratify is to treat the seed as mother nature would and put the seeds through a cold period either winter sow or refridgerate for a while each seed is different but most need a good long cold spell 1 to 3 month's. I just put them out in the cold this time of year.
You have mail Lorraine.
ok, my bad. Thanks Dave. Would have had poor people soaking their seeds to death.!!! New lesson #1: Never listen to Lorraine. lol
So what do they call the soaking thing. I actually knew that about the stratify thing. Yeah I know, ya'll don't believe me. That's cause
I didn't.
Lorraine,
here is a sight that you can go to that might help too !
www.theseed.co.uk/db1.html. I know I have it book marked so I can refer to it if I need to

You were close, but didn't have it all. I tried yours and got something else. I think this is the one you meant. I don't know how to convert it to a Dave's link. Guess I will have to learn, along with the smiley faces. LOL It is a great site.

Ok I have a good one I think.
It seems to me that a few of us on this thread want to offset the expense of our beloved hobby. Can it be done? Yes it can. There are specific things that need to be addressed so that we do not find our selves in deep trouble with the IRS, department of agriculture (by State) and local zoning laws that will or will not apply. A good deal of due dillagence is required by each and everyone that wants to try this.
Ok the fine print. I am not a lawyer, accountant or any other advisor so I am informing everyone how I am am going about the task at hand. I have found the state of oklahoma department of agricultures website. Also I have read all the rules governing what is and is not an enterprise requiring a license. Oklahoma allows a 1 time garage sale of plants fewer than 15. Also I am abit off center today because of the oncoming snow storm. Theysay we wont have any acumulation from it but I think they are wrong. Please do not take offense to the tone or anything that might be viewed as offensive. Its not my intent.
I plan to do all my sales through the mail so I will not have direct contact with the general public. The department of agriculture is not out there to stop you from doing what we as citizens of the USA are permitted to do as long as we follow the basic regulations of our "hobby". My experience with the department of agriculture has been non invasive. They will come out to your location and inspect the plants you have to sell. They may ask to see documintation on the plant material you intend to sell. i.e. sales reciept from the nursery you purchased your plants from to finish off or to propagagte from. They can be a wealth of information. Just remember they are just doing their job and want to be treated with respect. I have found that as long as you are non confrontational they are real easy to deal with. The fees are dependant on acreage, green house size and type of license you seek. My license cost me $33.75. The inspectors also can inspect out bound shipments to states that require certification. All nurseries offer this service and the expense is passed along to the buyer. Its a real simple process.
I will stop here and ask for questions. Please feel free to ask, if you do not want the information on this subject please let me know so I can get the information to those who do want it. I know 3 or 4 on this thread will need this information.
Dave
Ok how do we do smiley faces???? The links are converted automaticly. I like to put a space in front of and behind my links.
;>{ )
yeah when I put it up I had it right and then when it actually went up it had changed . Why did that happen? Thats the reason I edited it cause I thought maybe I had put it in wrong but it came up that way a 2nd time What's up?
Ok , If I understand you what your saying that if we want to buy something from you to do it thru email or how?
Thanks for that information. I had not even thought about needing a liscense. I will definitely look into this. Better to have the legal stuff straight before launching into something and having the government shut you down.
I am doing a tutorial on how to set up home based business to offset the expenses we have from doing that which we love to do. Several of us are disabled and it takes us an hour to do some things that most people can do in 20 min. and after we have done the task we have to rest for an hour or more. we are on limited income and I guess its my way to give back to everyone here on this thread. I am not promoting any one site or nursery to buy from.
I am not trying to promote buying from me in any way. I plan to do a few co-ops early next spring. the sources I have require specific documentation to be allowed the privledge of buying from them. I plant to grow up the things I buy and sell them once they have reach a more mature size. I guess you would call it a how to start your own mail order nursery. I have less than 1/2 an acre that my home sits on. Its a "you don't need 5 acres to have a nursery business". I will be using a part of my yard to grow plants on. its 5 ft x 30 ft and an 8 x 10' green house. This is a tough thing to do and it wont make anyone rich. I would be content if I was able to cover my expenses and pay for a vacation. It may take a few years to get there but it will happen.
I would like to know if everyone wants the thread to go this direction? A bit of history on the thread itself. several of us were in a co- op for propagation supplies. Sveral people asked me a few questions which turned into a request for the thread. Its one of the best things I have had happen to me. It makes me feel good just being able to help others do the same thing I love to do.
Flowerfantasy: What is your back ground? what do you like to grow? do you have a favorite plant? if so what is it. any plant you dispise? We have all managed to grow into a fantastic little group It is ok if you don't want to answer. I am just curious. I don't know why but I kind of feel responsable for the well being of our group. It feels like family for some reason.
Sorry I seem a bit scrambled. the weather has me in a bad way. oh well same song and dance different day. and the weather has just got started....thanks for bearing with me
Dave
You are so right bill. I am hopeing to go into detail on what I am doing to get things covered.
Question: can a co-op be pulled off by the 22nd or do I need to forget my idea? anyhelp from anyone would be apreciated
Dave
I am not sure what you mean by a coop. I would need additional information.
Another general question.... How do you get our zone listed by your name when you post something?
Mmmm - I would say that would be the world's fastest co-op. If the folks you know that want to join in are enough, it might be fine, but if you need more ... well....
Bill,
At the top of each page there are programs you can look into. Go into "my info". Then at the very bottom of your member page you can change or add information like your zone, that you want to show.

I love hostas and roses, I dislike shasta daisies. I think they are pretty but the can get so out of hand, I guess to put it a little plainer I don't like anything that is invasive to the rest of my plants. My 3 yuccas took over one of my flower beds and I had to get them out and when I did I didn't have much left under them. Out of those 3 yuccas I got 22 seperate plants and I replanted them down by our little lake they can't harm anything down there LOL.
Hey if you want to put up how to build a home based business, I sure will be interested.
Yea I know its a delima but I have to try.
Dave
Flowerfantasy:
I am hopeing to do that with a little input from everyone. I don't have all the answers but I am sure between us all we can figuire it all out. If you need to ask anything a bit more personal I can be found at Pughbear7@hotmail.com.
I really want to pass along everything I have learned along the way. I had an teacher/mentor that said in class if we started a business right after graduation he would burn it down. I am sure he was just trying to hammer the point home which did work. I have learned a lot on other peoples dollar so hopefully I wont make the same mistakes that I did way back when.
Dave
I don't know much about anything like that but I am always willing to learn anything new. I have learned so much on here . You have been a great help too.! I am one of Lorraines' biggest fans LOL. She has helped me tremdously.
Jnette, This was my first year with the Hells. I had one flower, that went to seed, which was easy to keep a eye on it, and not sure if I did it right
time will tell. It takes 265 days for a seed to Germ. You have to let mother nature do her thing. Like the stratifying thing only thing is, I don't know how it would work in the frig. I have a cold GH only heat I have for now is flood lights.
I have used the nylon booties, on my Blue Flag, but during the stratifying in the frig. My DH threw them away, thought it was some blue fuzzy thing in a jar. LOL And have not got seeds from the mother sense.,
Dave, Thanks for your concern: today is the first I have felt normal, if there is a normal ^_^
Smilys are easy LOL
Hold your shift key down and type 6-6 ^_^ and you have it.
I don't think Wash. State is that hard, not sure as of now I work a 54 hour week now and don't have a lot of time to indulge in what I love to do. But now and the time I get to retire it my be a hold Diff. story. but if I get it built by then, and get what I need in 10 years they can't change it, I hope....
And I am in to Hells and Dal's and Irises Love em.
This is my show off. One of my new babies, first bloom
Thanks for the tip Tilly ^_^ I must be doing it wrong because I got kitty ears. Love the dal's and I have been playing with the hell's I finally got 4 pots to germinate. It sounds like you have more heat than I ever will. I fill empty gallon milk jugs with water and line them up on the south side of the greenhouse. The way it works is the water absorbs the heat during the day and releases it at night. I have a ginger , impatient, and some tender annuals I wanted to see how they do. So far the imps and ginger are in full bloom and nothing seems to be fased by the cold outside.
What is your greenhouse made of, what glazing do you have on the outside? Tonight we were getting freezing rain and flurries. wind chill in the lower 20's. I use a opaque woven poly sheet to hold in heat as much as possible. I highly recomend using it. How big is your GH? Mine is 8 X 10. nice size and it does what I need. More info tomorrow I am sleep typing LOL... see you then
Dave
Dave, what kind of coop are you planning to start? Plants, or equip?
Also, I think the rule in NE is that if you make less money than you spend on your hobby, you don't have to pay taxes on your earnings...

I want to do a couple of co-ops. one is for heating cable to give heat to seed flats. Its still an idea. I believe a loss on any task is non taxable from any state. I realize every state will differ a little which is why I would like for anyone doing this to do some research as it applies to thier own situation. Unfortunately my own situation falls under a higher taxable rate for any postitive income after all costs.
Good thing my wife understands it all better than I do. LOL
I found a 48ft heating cable for about 34.00. I realize there was another co-op for similar things a few weeks ago. I am still in the planning stages of most of my ideas.
I am willing to bet you are a bit colder than we are here in oklahoma. I feel like a popsickle at the present moment.
Hi everyone. I found the other co-op on heat cables and mats. growers solution is giving all of us on DG a discount. we just need to talk to roger and tell him we are from Daves Garden. they don't have a discount set up in their system for us its just phone orders. I will be ordering next week myself. the single tray heating mat is discounted $4.00 so I am sure they will give us more on the higher priced items...well I can hope can't I??? I will let you know what I find out.
Dave
Ok, ya'll are too quick for me. I was gonna show you how to make a smiley and be a smart aleck, but yha'll beat me to it. Heck!!
I have the seed site in my favs, but it is hard to get to it. I've gotten about 4 diff places. When you get it, put it in your faves.
If you don't already have it,here's a pretty good site too. Has lots of germination stuff. Course we have our own experts here on this thread, but alas, they can't handle it all!!!! lol
Dave you are supposed to feel responsible!!! Cause you are our guru. Any mistake we make will be your fault!!! lol
