Let's Talk Turkey - Thanksgiving Edition

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Are you talking about the celery shortage thread?

Yes it is me and my so called other 1/2 lol - figure it out :-)

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

So what's this goal of 100 over there? 100 posts? Is it some sort of a competition? I guess I'm not getting it.

Karen

Since it is a holiday it get quiet in here. We have to make #1 next week. So dont let that celery thread stop you or anyone from posting. I am just trying to take up the slack. I have nothing better to do :-)

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I guess I'm still not getting it. I must be retarded. #1 for how many threads in a forum? #1 for how many posts on one thread? And is there a time limit to that? Like how many posts in one day?

Karen

I have no idea. I guess it just depends on how many people come in and yap. You and I could go at it all day - I think. If we did 1000 post so be it.

I just dont want the game forum to beat us this time!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, I see. I could help you out later tonight, but now I have to get off the computer, take a shower and go have turkey dinner with Dad and friends. I'm shirking tradition this year and eating out. Gonna have a big turkey dinner Saturday instead. Chat with ya later!

Thanksgiving duck & trimmings (squash, stuffing gravy & jellied cranberry) turned out very well, thanks to the skill of DH. Pecan pie later--we're full.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I had a great dinner today with my Dad and some friends at our local country club restaurant. Wonderful meal, and I didn't have to cook. Free, too, just make a food donation to the local food pantry. Would do it again next year. And I'm gonna cook a big turkey dinner on Saturday, as I'm off. Went walking after the dinner, then to a friend's house for dessert, where we chatted for hours. We had great fun today.

Did anyone see where this Black Friday madness killed a man in a Long Island, New York Walmart? I truely don't know how human beings can act like that. I have only ventured out one time on Black friday and I was nearly run over myself. Never cared to try it again!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I saw that. Still not determined (at least when I read it) exactly how he was killed. Trampled or something else. I cannot imagine ever doing anything lie that. I would never get up early and wait in a line for anything, unless it was needed food for my family. People act like animals sometimes. There's a once a year wedding gown sale in NYC and women get into fistfights.

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Black Friday report: At 6:30 AM McDonalds was standing room only with a double line of cars waiting for drive through. I passed them by, went home and burnt some bacon and murdered an egg. Wife just passed McDonalds and said it still looks like a mad house in there. To top off the excitement Ronald was out front advertising something for a buck.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Black Friday madness even at McDonald's?!!

Thomaston, CT

NEVER shop on Black Friday! I didn't want to leave house, but I had to take the airedale for a biopsy--turns out, the vet couldn't do it, because he picked up a severe heart murmur that was not there last month--I'm pretty upset, but not as upset as the dog is---he's got to wear the collar at least until Thurs. when he will have an ultrasound on his heart. He has a growth on his paw---he was gnawing it---so, the collar. The growth worries me, but so does the heart--he's only 6. If you notice the chewing on the collar---our lovely pointer pulled the collar off his head in the car, & chewed it! My DH had to stop the car & pull it away from her!

" Black Friday" is useless--buy something else for less. Even if I need to go to a mall, it is done some other day. Mailed my first packages today, to a nephew in TX.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i tried to hit the sales today - brewing beer in the area at 9AM so i thought i would get up early and get some stuff out of the way. was awake at 4AM and rolled over and got up a 6. Got to the mall a 7:30. blueray DVD at Sears - sold out - necklace for the wife - gone - though they will most likely find one for me, can still get it online t withhis weekend, free shipping but not without the mass state tax, i'll drive to tax free nh - then driving out of the parking lot a women with a 3 yr. old flips me the bird and drops a f-bomb - bringing up her kid to keep a stereo type alive.
was able to get my nephews the perfect push-up and chin up at the sale price (got the chin version for me too). time to buff these kids up!
brewing was good - on sale - and will be splitting 4 batches with my buddy - irish ale, scottish ale, alt, and an esb - 2 weeks till bottling - can't wait!! don't ask how much beer this will be or how long it will last - no preservitives so you need to have it fresh:)

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

That's awful about the man killed at the Walmart. People can be so horrible sometimes.

I did go out shopping today. I like doing the Black Friday thing, but not the early morning madness. I didn't leave the house till 8, and my friend and I didn't get to the shopping center till about 9:45. I didn't have a lot to spend, and it went very fast. We ate lunch at Red Robin, then went to one last store -- Walmart. Not crazy there at that time. My youngest sis was there early and said it was wall-to-wall people. Crazy long lines, and you couldn't move without bumping into someone. Glad I missed all that.

Later this afternoon a friend called and said he had won $100 on a scratch ticket and wanted to take me to dinner. Well, I couldn't turn down a free dinner, so off I went. We ate at the 99 Restaurant, and the meal was excellent. So, I had a good day, today.

BTW, Iris, I have a nephew in TX, too. He lives in Killeen. He is coming here for Christmas, and my sis from Alaska is coming, too.

Both my nephews live in Austin-so ship, ship, ship. My brother was just visiting from NM. Our daughters live in OH, MN & WA. Serves us right for raising them to be independent. More mailing tomorrow if I can get to the PO before noon.

I liked Chtistmas when I was a kid.
1940-50.
Not commercial at all.We got what we really wanted because there weren't any big toystores open all year, so wishes were a real surprise under the tree, something to wait for.
I dont do the mass shopping either. Hate crowds.
I have noticed the conspicuous absence of one ad after another depicting lovers exchanging expensive gifts and big expensive toys for kids.
Marketers know when to pullup the drawbridge when it comes to expensive ads.
No money out there, stores are not expecting those big holiday sales as in past years.
And where is it writtin ,how much you spend shows the recipiant how much you care?
I bought $6.00 seed ball packs for two elderly gardeners who have a hard time bending over to put plants in the ground, they will have Shirley Poppies where they want them.
Enough of this.
What posesses people to go like lemmings into a crowd out of controle.

Some people say 'it's tradition', but best to stay away from crowds. I suppose if I really needed a plasma TV I might be tempted. However we do fine with the TVs connected to the boxes. Now if they gave early bird discounts on mailing I would be interested, although I will try some flat rate this yr. Books are heavy.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I went once to the Black Friday madness and was roughed up by the crowd. I had been sick a few months before and had lost weight. I think I was down to 110 and the crowd body slammed me enough my ribs were sore later. Also, I moved where the crowd WANTED me to, not where I wanted to go. I remember feeling helpless to help my self... I can't imagine what others must of felt like watching that man be crushed and knowing they couldn't help him!! My heart aches for the family who lost their loved one because of human greed.
DH's buddy who lives in town is 6' 2" or maybe it's 6'4" with tattoos, is approx. 275lbs and bald. His wife sends him to get what she needs because she is even smaller than me and more on the frail side. He'll call and ask if I want anything while he's standing in line....it's going to take alot to move him.
I did have him pick up a red Gameboy for DGD one year, it was reg. $79.00 and he got it for $49.00 by standing in line at 5am. Thank goodness no one got hurt that day or I wouldn't of been able to give it with a happy heart.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Good morning y'all. I hear that down here in northeastern Florida the Black Friday madness was very slight. I would not know as I do not do crowds. Love www.amazon.com

Hope y'all had a happy thanksgiving and stay warm and safe.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks wren.
It's just the family 8 of us with good food and good natured mockery.
I love these events. My daughters spill their guts about things they did as kids I never knew about.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

We where down to just 3 this year. My DS and DBIL and my 2 DN could not make it. Problem mom is still us to cooking for 8 also and we have way to much leftovers. Oh well love ham and turkey sandwiches.

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Betty and I are into making up two meal packs for the freezer from the leftovers. Four of us can just not murder a whole turkey anymore. We used to have seven before our other son and family settled in Portland, Oregon. Two meals with seven eating pretty well cleans up what we would have made for the whole family.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - many turkey leftovers this weekend! I've been an online shopper since the very beginning. Before that - catalog (phone) shopper.

South Hamilton, MA

I still do a great deal of catalog shopping, not on line. Luckily we still have a local independent book store in Beverly MA as well as a children's bookstore in Wenham, the next town. We shop both places around the year. Personal service counts for a lot.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

After working for JCPenney for 15 years you will never catch me shopping in any store on Black Friday.(I may go out later in the evening when everyone else has gone home) but standing in line to buy electronics, give me a break. The technology changes so often that they'll be something better out next year. I like the deals they have at overstock.com or even amazon. We take our annual trip to the mall the see the decorations the first Monday in December(there's no one there). Otherwise I do 99.9% of my shopping on line.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

There have been some truly spectacular sales online. So awful about that poor gut at Walmart yesterday. I hope they can identify and prosecute those responsible. Gonna be real tough though.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

If they have a lab like CSI on tv they can identify the people that stepped on him by their shoes prints.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Probably many prints on top of each other. I think cameras are their best chance. If they have a good shot of someone running over him and then have a match of that person at the cashier, and they paid with a credit card, they have a decent chance.

South Hamilton, MA

I can see him being knocked down by accident. But once someone is down, you would think the group would divide around him. No need to step on people, that's plain greed.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

According to one witness, people even yelled complaints when they announced they were closing the store to investigate the death of the employee!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

His poor family.

Get tuff.

Thomaston, CT

People sometimes act like lemmings--not a good thing--I do catalog and online shopping, except I do go to the toy stores for the gkids--I like to check out the quality---with so much being made in China, it's hard to get stuff----I give a lot of books! And I do gift cards for those I know want them---Dutch Gardens & LLBeans were the choices this year.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Two of my favorite places to shop Robin, good choices!!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

That really is awful about that man who was trampled in Walmart. I get sick every time I think about it. Just horrible.

A couple years ago a friend of mine went to Circuit City on Black Friday with her daughter. While standing in line one of their employees put his hands under her shirt real fast and groped her. Needless to say she screamed. She was mortified and felt very violated, with good reason, I might add. The incident was caught of film, and the employee was subsequently fired. She pressed charges against him and it ended up going to court. Turned out he had a rap sheet with similar offenses. All that pervert (can we say that here?) got was a slap on the wrist. When it came time to subpoena the tape that the incident was on, Circuit City conveniently lost it. My friend suffered a lot of mental trauma from this incident. I don't wish that on anyone.

We don't hold our elected officials (including CEO's, etc.) accountable for their atrocities and misdeeds, why should we anyone else's?? Give them a BIG bonus and move them to another position, repeat .......

It's just not right. (Now we both can be in trouble, Karen) :-)

Glad I was brought up to be a "decent human," which includes owning up to ones mistakes knowing full well there will be repercussions.

On a lighter note, I some how managed to lose two pounds this feast .... anyone find them?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I did
