SEEDS FOR NEWBIES

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey guys, sorry I've been gone today. My computer crashed yesterday and I"ve been having to use my son's. I"m having to reinstall windows,so it's taking forever.
I'm trying to check in on his tho, and hopefully mine will be up tomorrow. Hope I don't have to get another hard drive. It's only about 6 months old.

At least it's still under warranty.

Got some seeds in fromf Nanny56 today. Good stuff to share with all you new guys.
If you know other newbies, send them over.

Browns Mills, NJ(Zone 6b)

Lorraine, Do you want my yearly stash of foxglove again? I got a bunch. I also have alot of Black Hollyhock seeds if you want also. LMK and I'll send them out. Andrea

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Lorraine, I am sooo sorry . . .did I miss this? I have seeds I can contribute for the newbies. Shall I still send them in?

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7b)

Lorraine, Oh gosh - I somehow missed this thread when it started. I am a newbie, joined in October, and could use some different seeds but also have seeds to share. I hope there are still seeds left, anything butterflies like would be wonderful. I have the following to offer if newbies are interested:

Moonflower (white)
Heavenly Blue Morning Glory
Crimson Rambler Morning Glory
Moss Rose (Sundial Mix)
Four O'Clock (solid yellow)
Blazing Star (violet)
Sea Holly (violet - Eryngium leavenworthii)

These are harvested from my own plants and I would love to share them with some other newbies. I will send in mailer along with envelope and postage and dmail some ideas as to what I would love for my butterfly garden.

Yall are such a bunch of awesome folks!

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Aardvark, thank you for sharing and I"m sure others would love the seeds. Got you covered on some butterfly stuff. !!

Also, thank you Mygypsie and Seander for helping out. People have been generous and I"ve been able to get some good stuff out! Don't you just love helping newbies?

I have some plants outside now that I got from Seander in my very first newbie seeds when I first joined. So some of the things I have tosend came from some of those plants. Now , that's paying it forward!!

Been getting some request for foxglove, so that will be great. Hollyhock too.

I want to keep this going for as long as I can and with all the generous folks, I think I can. It's so much fun.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Forgot. In case you don'thear from me as often as you should today, it's cause I"m working on my other computer. Got a virus and crashed it, so working on getting it restored adn getting all the hardware and software to work. So I've had to download lots of swtuff to this computer, then getting it to the other one. And I know about as much about a computer as I do rocket science.

Slidell, LA(Zone 8b)

Lorraine - I have hollyhock and possibly some foxglove too - will add those to what I am sending you.

Corrales, NM(Zone 7a)

How wonderful that so many people are offering seeds! Lorraine, do you realize what you have started? LOL, this could go on for years.

I hope you get your computer stuff figured out, that is no fun to deal with.

Melissa

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh BTW, I was laughing really hard reading about your seed collecting 'addiction'. My property and that behind us is open prairie and hilly flood zone so I make routine trips to see what I can find growing and collecting seed from natives. My neighbors have seen me on many occasions heading out for the boonies and they think I'm weird or mentally challenged! LOL Really they are nice people, they just don't understand that that is FUN for me. :)

Browns Mills, NJ(Zone 6b)

Alright Lorraine, I'll send you a bag of the foxglove that should keep you stocked for the rest of the year and into next. I really have that much. I have a good amount of the hollyhock too. I'll get that out to you asap.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Uggg, Lorraine, even with my backups... it can take me days to get my PC back to where it once was... no fun at all.

hope you didnt lose any important files.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm so mad at Gateway. Had the computer 3 weeks and they want me to pay for the disk I need to get it going. They didn't send the driver disk with the operating one. Don't ask me why.!!! Anyway, they will be sending me the driver one free. Guess they didn't want me to complain all day. Easier to just send it to me.

What made me mad was one guy I talked to said I"d have to send the computer in to get windows installed and I'd have to pay for the shipping ($60.00 he said) Yeah right. he he. Anyway, called back and another guy did it on line. Well, almost did it online, still no drivers. I HATE VISTA!!!

I hope this does go on for a long time. I'm having a ball. Thank you, thank you for all the seeds. Had lots of request for foxglove and stuff like that.

I know all about that go into the woods and find stuff. lol ONly I look like a bag lady dragging my wagon behind me with seeds and plants in it. Big ole floppy hat and comfortable shoes. Then there is the midnight run to the trash can with trash and the quick look to see if my daughter threw away a gallon jug I might need to winter sow in. (She lives in front of me and forgets to save them for me) So what else can I do? Can't let those jugs get picked up with the trash. lol

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Lorraine,
How do you winter sow in a milk jug?
(newbie lynn)

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Lynn, you need to pop over to the Winter Sowing Forum!! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/coldsow/all/

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL... Lynn - now you are in for another addiction.
- out scavaging for milk jugs... raiding neighbors recycling bins....

winter sowing is so much fun.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7b)

WOW - there is a winter sowing forum?!! I am going to be in so much trouble with my husband if I don't get off of Dave's, but I can't help myself. I keep finding more great stuff and folks who think about things that I'm interested in.

Lorraine, sorry for your trouble with the computer. I'm a computer idiot so I can't ever blame anyone else. All the same I'm pretty dependent on mine and sympathize with you.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm just glad I was able to get the laptop from my son for a while!! I'd go nuts.

Yep, the winter sow forum will keep you busy!!! Winter sowing is so much fun!
I was really thinking it wouldn't work, but was I surprised. Just couldn't believe tdhings could survive the cold.!!! So, yes, heaven help you, a new addiction. Anytime you see a milk jug or 2 litre coke bottle, you'll lunge for it.

Shawn and Robin, got your envies today. Working on them now and will get them in the mail in the morning.!

Michael, got your seed "donation" Gonna be some happy people!!! Tuinkabouter, got all yours too.!! Can always count on you when seeds are needed.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Lorraine,
I am so glad you told me about the winter sow forum. I guess I thought you plant the seeds directly into the soil. I was panicking because I thought I had to rush and get the new beds ready. I scrounged our recycling bin for milk cartons today, thanks for the advice. I need to catch up here and get back to the WD forum!

Do you recognize this plant? I was looking for seeds in my garden so I can send some in to you .I transplanted this last summer, and I don't know what it is. I thought maybe cornflower, but not sure.
Thanks

Computer problems are terrible :( My laptop decided to crash on me in April (thank goodness it was after exams!) It was just barely off warranty, and HP wouldn't do anything about it except inform me I could send it in to them to fix for a couple hundred dollars or so. Ya right! I took it to Memory Express and they charged me $50 and didn't end up fixing it (they couldn't even get it to turn on!) So, I took it to the university to see if IT could help, and they were thinking it would cost another couple hundred dollars. At this point, school had been in for a week already and I didn't have a lot of extra cash to buy a new one with so I decided I would take it apart to see if I could see anything. It was fun to take apart and guess what--- it worked!!! It has been running perfectly ever since I took it apart and put it back together in September :)

By the way, I agree with the Vista hating...I use Ubuntu Linux :)

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7b)

Lynn, those flowers look like perennial bachelor's button (centaurea montana). Love that blue color, those are beautiful!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Re - computers... I gotta say... even though others do not always feel the same way... but i LOVE Dell's customer service.

I once had a "catastrophic" mess, where i had to wipe my HD clean... possible virus, i can't recall
the 'kid' spent literally 2.5 hrs on the phone with me - while 'we' wiped and rebuilt [installed drivers] my HDD.
I was truly amazed.

then, i had troubles this past May - and even though i'd had my computer almost 4 yrs, when i called on a whim, expecting to hear... you have to call the "gimme your credit card" tech support.... the guy walked me thru installing my drivers again. Little did i know, i have life time... yes, life time, phone tech support with my PC. Now that is service.

OK -- sorry 'bout that....... back to the seeds.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Sorry for being off topic, but . .

For all Dell computer users . . . I have an Inspiron 8500 from the college where I work. It is a lap top and I was having all sorts of problems where I would turn on the computer but the screen would not turn on. The techies tried for over a month to solve the problem. sometimes the computer screen would work - and then it wouldn't.

Finally, one of the techies found the solution on some obscure webpage.

Get this for a high tech solution! Apparently the wires that control the starting of the computer and that control the lighting of the screen are too close together on this particular model. The techie person came. Lifted the blue plastic band where the start button is and used a screwdriver to pry the two wires apart!

Computer has worked like a charm since ^_^

Santee, CA(Zone 9a)

Hiya Mama Rainey,

I got some newbie packs for ya... got them in the zinnia swap contributions. I will be sending them your way soon. So more seeds for ya ;o)
You's doing such a neat "pay it forward" with this!!

*smootches*
~melissa lissa lou (oh yea, I got my old name back...hee hee)

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

What's wrong, don't you like the lissa part anymore? Silly girl, you know that's your new name, so get used to it. (:p)

Oh no, Lynn, now you are an official winter sowing fananic. Once you've scrounged for milk jugs and stuff, it's official!!!! Found something else today that will work. My son brought me a gallon vinegar bottle. Perfect!!! So, looks like anything in a gallon jug will work just fine.!! lol Those flowers are beautifu. and I'd love to have some seeds to send out.!!
I'm not good with names of plants,so I'm glad they have the plant identification forum if you haven't used it. EVerytime I send them a picture, I get an answer really quick and they always figure it out!

I've always loved GAteway's customer service too, but something is goin on there. I called yesterday and had a guy tell me I'd have to send it to their service department to get windows re installed cause the disk did't seem to be working. But I'd have to pay the shipping. Got off the phone, got mad, called back and the other guy walked me through it and it went in just fine. They obviously need to teach their techs better.

However, the rest of the whole sad story was, the disk worked but didn't put the drivers in so I could hook up my dsl , etc. Wanted to charge me for the drivers then. Oh no, I griped about that too and last guy said he was gonna send them no charge. WE;ll see!

My son and daughter have dells and love them. I have had 6 Gateways' and always really was pleased and the service was great, till now. I hate to have to argue with someone when I'm still under warranty.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Oooops, forgot. Redheadedwonder, we'll have to call you next time and let you fix it for us . That's so cool. I'm so scared of the things I just know I'll ruin them and crash the main frame.!!! If there is any problem at all, I'm on the phone. However, I did put in a new hard drive last year.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lorraine -- I use A LOT of vinegar .... so i've been saving those jugs too. they are perfect arent they?

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Lorraine,
I am making up an envelope of seeds to send to you. I didn't think I had any, then I started looking at everything closer, and was I ever surprised. I don't have a big selection, but heck, it all has to start somewhere!

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

kThanks Lynn, that will be great!!!

Yea, I like the vinegar thing too. Think of all the things that come in those size bottles.!! Yipee. More things to plant seeds in that I have no room to plant. Oh well, what's another flower bed. The goal is NO GRASS, or in my case weeds.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Boy it sure would be nice if somebody could figure out how to keep weeds out completely. I am going to have to go to the winter forum thingy and see what is going on. This thing with the jugs has grabbed my interest. Yes Lorraine has done a great job of newbies seed. I was included in the first of it and just can't hardly wait to get it all in the ground.

Corrales, NM(Zone 7a)

YAY! I got my seeds today. Thank you so much. I really look forward to growing some new things! Those little seed packets are so cute Lorraine! Nice touch.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Lorraine - The computer fixing was purely a coincidence :D I definitely wasn't expecting it to work after haha. Plus, my boyfriend did most of the dictating- I just did what he told me to! :)

Isn't that the way it is. All the great things we do end up being an accident or unintended. lol I've always wondered whatever made whoever made the first cup of coffee decide, hey this stuff might taste good if I grind it up and make a drink out of it. lol Sure am glad they did. lol

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I agree. It really bugs me I don't know what I did to fix it... :S

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

lol, that's too funny. I was trying to do something the other day on mine, and finally got it to work and there is no way I could do it again.!!

Got these envy's today.!! Heidi and Lynn. Getting them ready to go out tomorrow.

Also, got a box full of seed from Smegtone!! I thank you and the newbies thank you. They are gonna love you.!!!

I can't get over the generosity of all of you who are sending seeds. I've been able to get stuff out to people that they ask for and so many really good seeds. I've given you a new name. "Seed Angels" Your seed will be growing all over thecountry. I think that is so cool.!!!

Brenham, TX

Hi Lorraine (and all the seeders!) - Lorraine, thank you for the goody bag of seeds!! They were in waiting in my mailbox when I arrived back from Brenham yesterday, can't wait to get them planted and get in on the seed exchange. This is soooo much fun! Wishing a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday to all!!
GG

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

This is what Thanksgiving is all about...sharing one's bounty and good fortune.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Glad your seeds got there ok, GG. And you are so right Nanny. What Thanksgiving is all about!!

If I'm not on so much today, it's cause I have the twins today and that is a full time job. They are 3 and boys at that. Course their brother, he's 7, will be here too, but he'll hide out with a video game. lolol

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7b)

I'm right there with you Lorraine. I have boy-girl twins, in first grade this year (Thank God) and a 13 and a 12 year old to boot. So if anyone ever wonders what happened to aardvark, well it probably has something to do with chasing people down or trying to prevent someone from hanging someone else from a rope (yes, one of them REALLY tried this - purely innocent though, I think, just didn't quite understand the concept of once their dead their dead for good) or playing chauffer, etc. Have fun with your twins though! They are so much FUN, too - if you survive! :)

Covington, GA(Zone 5b)

LorraineR I've got some seed packs to send you. Zinnias, Penstemon, Malope, Gailardia, Gazania, maybe some others. I'm going through my seeds tonight & tomorrow. I should be able to send out on Monday.

Do you still want them? Great thing you got started here. I'll also send some postage to help you out.

Rose

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you Lorraine what a wonderful package of seeds. Would you like more to pass on as I package mine?
Robin
