SEEDS FOR NEWBIES

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I think it helps soften the outer shell of the seed to allow faster germination...I think...

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I think that's it too. That's terrible, I know to do it, but don't know why. I'm gonna give you guys a link to a thread that you might enjoy. It was started by Pughbear, who has owned and managed several nurseries, but he explains propogation so well. And so simple, like propagation for dummies. (He started it cause he's a friend and I assured him there were other people as dumb as me) lol You might lurk around some and ask questions. He'll explain so you'll understand. Lots of people here are super smart about things, but are kind of hard to under5stand. I just want someone to say, here, do this. Then I do it and it works and later I'll find out why it works. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/905796/

Huber Heights , OH(Zone 5b)

I sent our envy out but didn't put our dmail name in it (such a dummy at times) name is Patrick Long on the envelope

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I got it.!!! Thanks!! ( ;o)

Crozet, VA

I believe that what I heard about the hydroperoxide is that is does allow more oxygen to reach the roots and thus helps to ensure a stronger root system.

You mean that it works on canna seeds? Do you still have to file them first? I have some seed from cannas that I grew from seed this yr. BEV

Keep on keeping on, Lorraine! I sent some seed packs with my zinnia trade and I am putting several more together. If you have packs for them, I can just send you a lot of seeds in bulk. Easier on me; a pain for you!
Also, if you get requests from any European DGers, I could send some packs from here. My varieties are limited, however .. at least this year! ...so I night call for help.
I'd bet we can keep this going as long as you can get out of bed and mail the seeds!

Brenham, TX

Hi Lorraine - I'm brand new since this morning! Looking forward to sending my envy for the seeds. My hubby's starting his winter garden just now so don't know exactly what seeds will be of interest. I love herbs (basil, italian parsley, oregano, thyme, etc) and he adores tomatoes, peppers, and cabbage, amongst other veggies. I'll send my envy when I get the address (this is my first post) and thank you very much for the seeds!

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

I have quite a bit of odds and ends in seeds. Started getting into gardening again after long illnes and participated in some trades. As it happens sold our house here in the east and are moving to FL. and will container gardening???Would you like me to send these to you Helene

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Helene,it would be great. Thank you so much. I hope you will keep doing better!!! Florida is so beautiful adn I'm sure it will help you get better. Soaking up that sun.

Jim if you wanna send them bulk, just go right ahead! I am glad to put them in packets.!!!

Sorry I"ve been off today. Actually been putting seeds in packets, lol. And finally realized if I didn't clean my kitchen and vacumn creatures would start to come out of the dirt on the floor. lol

Tonya, godt your envhy today. Will get your seeds out tomorrow
Mella, got your seeds!! So great. Thank you so much.
Thanks to all of you for being so generous. Wow, there's lots of nice people on Dave's.!!!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Hi Lorraine and everyone else on this forum. Thank you so much for the seed offer. I will be sending my envy tomorrow. I joined Dave's 2 weeks ago, I think. I find myself on this site every free minute - this is as addicting as gardening!
Next year, I will be able to send seeds. I am embarrassed to say that I never even thought about collecting seeds before. Silly me, I guess I thought of them as coming from the store, like hamburger and chickens and eggs. Oh My.
I would absolutely LOVE to have some 4 o'clocks, poppies, and hollyhocks.
I had never seen 4 o'clocks before until last summer. I looked for them at the nurseries this year, but did not see any. I was looking for plants, I never thought of SEEDS. That shows how new I am! But now I have a little hobby greenhouse, and I am ready!
Thanks again.
Does verbena make seeds? I have a lot of verbena blooming.

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

Lorraine and everyone who donated - thank you! I received my seeds yesterday. It was like an early Christmas present. :-) Thanks to everyone!!
~chele

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Glad you got your seeds Chele, and glad you liked them.!!

Better watch out Lynn, cause seeds are addicting too. !!! You';ll find your self looking for seeds every where you go. Your friends and relatives will hate to see you coming cause they'll know you have a seed collecting bag with you. And a pair of snips. Don't forget the snips. Heaven help the plant with seed pods you can see from 50 feet.!! lol

No one will go anywhere with you cause they'll know you'll be looking for seeds everywhere. But you'll have a ball!!! lol
Will get you some 4 oclocks and have some of all you asked for I think.

Four o clocks are so easy to grow. REally easy to germinate too, so you'll love it! A greenhouse already. How neat is that!!

^_^

Louisville, KY

Oooooweeee! I got my goody bag today in the mail. Thank you Lorraine and Maggidew and the secret donor who who sent trumpet vine.
Spring is going to be so colorful next year. Heck, I may not wait till then. lol
This is such a great thing to do for newbies. Next time, I'll be an oldie, so count me in to toss over seeds for the next bunch.
Happy planting y'all.

Altamonte Springs, FL

=/

Did you by any chance get my seeds yet?

I hope so.

Stephanie

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, Steph, just got them.!!! ^_^

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I put my package of seeds in the mail today. Wish I had more..if I get more I will send some your way.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Nanny. Love that name. I'm a Nanny. Ain't it grand? Love to hear that little knock at my door and little voices saying "Nanny, it me". (I'm supposed to guess which "me" lol)

Altamonte Springs, FL

Dang, my mail takes forever. but glad you got them, I hope I sent enough postage.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

To our oldest GD we are nana & papaw. Her younger sister calls us nanny & pappy. She is the one that walks to the beat of a different drummer! lol

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

ONe in every crowd, huh. Two in our bunch!! lol Funny how no matter what you want to be called, they call you what they want. Usually the first one "chooses" the name.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm going to be gone tonight and tomorrow, so if you don't get an answer back from me that's why. Got seeds so if you need to know about sending envies, go right ahead and do it!! ^_^

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

sent my seeds wanted to know if you have received them yet? plmk and thxs

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

haven't gotten them yet, probably tomorrow. I'll be sure to let you know one way or theother. ^_^

Hi guys. When you send your envy's please make sure there is enough postage on them. I had several come last week postage due. Sometimes the mail carrier will leave them and I leave the money the next day, but sometimes they will just send it back.

If you are sending a bubble , it will take at least 2 stamps empty. If it has seeds in it, it is more

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi, Patrick, Georgia and Melissa, got your envy's. Seeds will go out tomorrow!
Lissa, thanks for the seed. I'm sure other newbies will enjoy them.!

Millsap, TX

Hey!
What a Cool deal..

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Lorraine, et al!

Got my seeds yesterday! Thanks so much! Already trying to decide where I'll plant them! You are all very generous.

Tonya

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6b)

Just got my seeds yesterday. Some I have really been wanting. All of you are so generous. I thank-you. I won't be a newbie next year and I will be able to contribute too.
Thanks again

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Glad to hear your seeds got there and there were some you needed.!! I hope you have a good time "playing" with them. So fun! lol

Wilmington, DE

Wow, so cool. Count me in. I'll send you the SAS bubble envelope tomorrow, this is too cool. Thank you so much, what a wonderful treat. This is my first year winter seed sowing and I'm really looking forward.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Cool, be looking for it.
Georgia, Melissa, Jerry and Pat, your stuff is on it's way to you.!!

If any of you newbies or oldies have some threads, etc. you can post a link to this thread, that would be great. Want to reach as many newbies as we can!! (And oldies)

One more thing, gals, please be sure to put your Dave's name in your envy or on the outside. I cant find who you are if I don't have it. Also, if you have a list of things you want, please put that in there too. Just makes it go faster getting your stuff to you. If I have to figure out your d mail name, then find a list in a d mail or on the threadd, it just takes a lot of time. (Rather be usisng that time to get you good stuff in your envy. ( ; ) ) ( that's a double chin. lol)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Do you send seeds to Canada? I don't think I have any American stamps kicking around, but I can send some money to pay for them. I'll see if I have some seeds to contribute as well although I don't have much :)

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I've sent seeds all over, France, Denmark, etc. So I can certainly send to Canada. If you like, just send cash, and I'll put the stamps on for you. I don't know what it will cost, but sure you can find out. It might be as much as a couple bucks, but may not, so I"d check first. I'll see what I can find out too. ^_^ You can do a calculate postage at USPS. ^_^

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Excellent :) I have another question - how do I access the address exchange? I will probably pick up a bubble envie Wednesday and mail it out Thursday.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

HI, sent you a d mail with address. ^_^

Got your envelopes today: CJ, Duchess Dreams, Brenda,

Pughbear7(David) and Moretz, I got your donations to the "cause" Thank you very much for all the help. I know the "newbies" are thankful as well. ^_^
