SEEDS FOR NEWBIES

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey guys. Was gone from yesterday afternoon till just now, so will get all caught up on your post and answer. Just gotta read them all.
Also got a new computer and have been trying to get it set up. Hate that!!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OH but new PC's are so much fun. ... but yes, can be time consuming getting all the programs put in and all the fine tuning.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Gave up. Will get back to it later. It's a stinkin laptop, and I can't get used to the way they work without a mouse. I'm old and set in my ways. My ex husband thought I needed a lap top. Why i will never guess. Guess he wants to make up for years of misery. lol

We have plenty of seeds, so don't worry. I can get them to you. Have lots of donations coming in!! I so cited, I just can't stand it. Also went to a friend's for the night and raided her garden for seeds. he he I"m going to take the 10 down cause i don't think we'll have a problem helping people.

Just be sure to give the envy enough time to get here, but I will let you know I got it, so if you don't hear from me. Please check with me cause don't want any lost stuff out there. I'd hate for y ou to be waiting on me and it not be here. I had that happen once, so i just want to always make sure.

When you send your envy, maybe put some notes about the kinds of things you would like and what your sun, shade situation is.
Don't trust me to go back through the thread and find it. I know my limitations. lol

Carolyn, think I gotcha on a couple herbs and vines. Actually got some seeds off some neat stuff today.

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Lorraine, I have a laptop too, but can't manage without a mouse. You can get wireless ones that connect to the laptop via a USB connection. Good luck with the new laptop.

Sarah

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lorraine,

I have a bunch of friends who are Sr's and getting laptops [most are snow birds] and they hate the touch pad... so one got one of those wireless mice [mouses] and another one got a USB mouse.

make it much easier since you are so used to the mouse that comes with a CP.

I too have a hard time sometimes... i will bounce back and forth... if someone is on my computer, i'll hop on laptop, like now I'm on DH's since he's on mine.

Anyhooo -- i've been busy in my seed basket trying to get things organized. I hope the bubble envie i'm sending in is big enough.... i think it will be stuffed.

Huber Heights , OH(Zone 5b)

We are interested in some seeds if it is not to late, we are not picky my hubby loves to get outside work in the flower garden, he can't wait to move back to Jacksonville FL so he doesn't have to bring everything in the house like we do here

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Are there any seeds left to offer, if so I certainly would love to receive some, and I too would like to send back some seeds next year.

I have full afternoon sun in the front and morning sun in the backyard.

And should you not have anymore that's ok, but I think it mighty nice of you to offer seeds for us newbies....to Dave's

Janet

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I'm sending in seeds for drought resistant plants, full sun ... some annuals some perennials.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey, guys, we'll have plenty., so get those envy's out. The "oldies" at Daves are really generous. IN fact I'm making up little seed packets now. Yipee!!!

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Great!!! Need those!

I forgot about getting the wireless mouse. I gotta check in to that. That crazy thing on the laptop just runs away from me. Gotta remember if I don't move my hand, it goes where I go. lol

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I'm not too familiar with VIsta, though i have worked with it a bit, helping a friend set up her laptop... but you can go into the Control Panel, and click on the Touch Pad and possibly "slow it down".

here is some food for thought....

Altamonte Springs, FL

Lorriane,

Mailed my bubble with the seeds we talked about today, you should get it next week, hopefully. One thing: I cant remember if I put 3 stamps or 2 inside for my return seeds, if I forgot one, let me know & I will mail it out to you ASAP.

Do you accept seeds not in commercial packages? if so I have tons of Orange zinnia I can also send: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/61928/ thats what kind it is/what it looks like.

Thanks!
Stephanie

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Steph -- i send her all seeds from my garden... no commercial seeds.

most of us that have "bulk" seeds.. they are from the garden.

Altamonte Springs, FL

Carolyn_Cropper, that little girl in the picture has to be the cutest little thing ever!

Altamonte Springs, FL

ok, then I am going to send some of these zinnia, for some reason no one wants them when I offered at another site for SASE :(

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

i've got some of those too [orange profusion]. there is another guy, who in the spring i'll be sending some bulk seeds too.
he also gives away a lot of seeds 'for a cause'

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Thank you Steph. That is baby Olivia and she is 2. That is one thing I can say is that if I do nothing else well in this life I make some cute kids!
My oldest is 13 and I wish I looked like her...I will be in trouble in a couple years with this one!

hmmm...orange Zinnias...I like those.

Knoxville, TN

I'd love to have some seeds. I'm pretty new to trying to grow from seed so I'd like something easy! I have limited space and it's part sun although I've got lots of containers I can use that get full sun.

I appreciate the "oldies" being so generous with us newbies!

I'll get my bubble out to you tomorrow. Thanks so much!
cj

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I think things from last year or year before are fine. I know you took good care of them and I thnk that's the secret. Some one sent me seeds from 2006 and they all germinated!

Newbies, if you see anything the "oldies" are sending you would like, just let me know and I"ll see you get some.

Here's a few things I have now that I can offer you. Of course I can't guarantee I'll have them long, depends on how fast they go, but can't hurt to try!

Tall Canna's
Grape Hyancinth Beans
White Datura
Red Salvia
Orange and Yellow Cosmo
Cockscomb (Celesia) Burgundy
Rose of Sharon
Sunflower Mix (All kinds and colors)
Wildflower mix
Zinnia Mix
Cleome
Striped Marigolds
Mixed climbers

Like I said, that's just some to give you an idea. More will be coming in next week as the "oldies" get their stuff to me.

I feel like we'll have enough so I'm going to put up a thread on the welcome mat. Get to more newbies!

I'll be waiting for your envy CJ, got some things it will be hard to not germinate!!! lol

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Ok, canna seeds - I have an orange canna that is making seeds...but I've never collected them. Information as to how? Here's a photo

Corrales, NM(Zone 7a)

I am sending my hollyhocks tomorrow. I have 10 pink Hollyhock and 10 double white Hollyhock packages.

Can I request Canna seeds! I have seen beautiful cannas here and that is something I don't have at all yet. I also love climbing things.

ooooooh and sunflower mix! what wonderful seeds people have sent. :)

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

You sure can have cannas!!! If you haven't already mailed your envy, enclose your request and then I won't be able to forget. lol

As for canna seeds. Mine haven't made seeds either, I"ve gotten all the ones I have from a friends plants. Those little furry pod things that are on the very top of the plant turn into brown seed pods, but I guess they really have to be pollinated. Don't think they self pollinate. But mine are bare as bones!! The pods are easy to see if they are there, they are brown pretty good size and have about 3 together. Let me know if you see any.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey guys. Got seeds for the newbie packs today from Flower Junkie(daisey) and TCS(Teresa) Ya'll were so generous, and I'm sure my thank you is from the newbies as well.

You guys are some lucky campers. The new seeds are great!
Be sur to tell your newbie friends to come over and get their seeds in case they haven't seen the thread!

Well, I guess I'll get in on this also.....as a 3 month newbie there is nothing better to get in the mail than seeds....unless of course it is money! I have lotsa west sunshine and am in zone 5......I'd love to take anything....I'm just drying some of my seeds in the barn. don't know what I'll come up with, but I'll let everyone know what I have to trade. This was a very kind gesture on you "oldies"....thanks again.

Gentry, AR

just became a paying member today will be sending my envy. thanks to all you oldies hope to be one some day.

Altamonte Springs, FL

Speaking of Canna seed, I was told to nick my canna seeds, but those lil buggers are tough as nails & I have no idea how. any ideas? once I grow them & they set seed I will gladly share, but that will take awhile.

Stephanie

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Welcome, newbies!! Got seeds waiting for you! If you will, when you send your bubble, please put your d mailname on it and maybe send me a note with some things you like, sun/shade, etc.

Got yours BArbara, but would still be good if you'd send infowith the envy. Saves lots of time going back through post. I'll try to get stuff that will work in your zone. ^_^

The only way I've been able to do the canna's is with sandpaper or an emory board. Just have to make sure you go deep enough you cansee the white.
Then I just put in some water with a llittle hydrogen peroxide in it and they root really well in a few days. New roots will come from where it's "white"

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I just found a link to this..sooo cool! I don't have a lot of seed but for sure have more than I need so will get some off to you in the next few days. You are in the addy exchange?

Some are extras from what people have been very generous to send to me.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Nanny. It really feels good to pay it forward, doesn't it. I'm like you, don't have tons, but much more than I need to plant. lol

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Lorraine, how long will you keep this offer open? Since there is a reason, I thought I'd keep collecting seeds, since my garden is still in bloom. No reason to if there isn't a need, however. :-)

Altamonte Springs, FL

What does peroxide do for seeds?

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I'd like to keep it going.!! There will always be new people and I'd love to be able to get seeds to lots of them. So, as long as I can get my hands on the seeds, I'll ship em out. I'm having a ball doing it. lol

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I've had it explained to me about the peroxide, but just know it has something to do with the oxygen. Can someone else explain it? I know Ican tell the difference when I put it in with seeds like canna's that I soak to root.
