Time to Settle in for the Winter?

Looks better now then in June.

I guess I am now Hermitized.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes it does

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Just taking a short break from cleaning up the yard. Found a bonus patch of catnip under the apricot tree! The medlar has just about dropped all it leaves - guess I should harvest my medlars and put them out to blet.

I'm building a lasagna garden in my neighbors yard - I had to do something with the dump truck load of wood chips covering my driveway! All the leaves and dead stuff from the garden go into the lasagna bed and my uncomposted compost pile! I don't know what I would do without my neighbors yards to "garden" in.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Sherrie and onewish The June part is befor the lazagna bed.November is where new spring bulbs are and new plants will go there this comming spring.
I have a wish list too long to post.
So glad I have Daves Garden
Have tried to talk gardener friends into it but they think i'm nuts for being on a chat room of any kind.
Too bad for them when they want to know "How did you know to do that?"

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

LOL! Yep! Too bad for them!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I tell everyone I see about DG, all my friends and family think I'm nuts too. If my father was still with us he's understand completely.

Think your nuts? I am nuts and admit it :-)

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Me three.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

JoAnne, you're lasagna garden looks great. I have never tried that. I'm always digging, digging, digging. At least my soil it pretty easy to dig. One reason I do it that way is that I have a lot of invasive quack grass in many areas, and the lasagna method wouldn't kill it. I have to dig up the grass roots, and that's a real pain. Any little piece that's left behind will grow, but if I keep removing the roots I eventually get a handle on it. It can really take over a garden and choke everything else out if you don't get rid of it. You have to be really diligent with that stuff.

I also have problems in certain areas with Tradescantia. That runs rampant all over, and the only way to get rid of it is to dig it, unless you don't mind harsh chemicals. I suppose smothering it out would work, too. I have one garden where it's really taken over that I want to renovate next year. Have a lot of nice DL's in that garden, so I can't smother the area, as I would have to move everything. Oh, well.

JoAnn, that is too bad for your friends who think you're nuts. I think DG is great, and I'd hate to be without it. I have a friend who would love to be a member, but she can't afford a computer or Internet service. That's unfortunate for her. She and her husband live on just one SSI check. In Jan. she will be able to collect hers as well, and that will give her extra spending money. I hope she will be able to get Internet service then. She does have a used computer that one of her kids gave her, but hasn't set it up yet. Hopefully it's not too old.

Hey, I'm nuts, too, guys (hence the screen name)! I don't know if my friends and family think I'm nuts for being a member of a garden chat website, as they don't say so, but they probably just don't want to tell me. I believe they all think I'm nuts for always buying so many daylilies and other plants. Oh, well. Those who aren't into plants and gardening will never understand.

Karen

How did they do that! The 3 and 4 down. I cant even copy and paste it!

Dunno, Sherrie. Is it in character symbols perhaps?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Sherrie: It depends on which font your system uses as the system font of your browser.

This is an overly simplified explanation .......

Different folk have different fonts being used, so the symbol will be different depending on the browser's default font.

It is a Special Character. They can be accessed several ways, but sometimes can be tricky.

For example: ON A PC Hold down the ALT key and type the numbers 0 1 8 9 on the numeric key pad and the symbol for 1/2 will show up. Special characters on Macs are accessed through the ALT/Option key and different codes. For example, on a Mac, the é symbol is created by holding down the ALT key and typing "e" twice. On PC ALT+0233

If your font has no character in the "character slot" chosen (1/2 character slot is 0189) a generic symbol will be substituted in its place.

NOTE: all Special Character Codes must be 4 numbers long ... for example The character in slot 10 is ALT + 0010, Slot 9 = ALT + 0009, etc.

Remember to lead numbers with 0 to make sure the codes are 4 numbers long. 0001, 0010, 0100, etc.

Here is a list of the character set:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8859-1

The code needed in the chart above is the BOTTOM NUMBER in each cell.

I hope I didn't just make it more confusing!!!

Edit: Had a code number one off! Oops!

Interesting tutorial ... and thanks!

è I get the e yippee

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

LOL!
I need the accent gong in the other direction in order to spell my granddaughter's name ... Taélar. I have to go to the Character Map for that one every time.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I suppose I could try ...
U+00E9 But it doesn't look like it's working for me.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Not sure how to execute the U+00E9 things ... might be for writing web page code.

Copy and paste would work as well ..... :-)

Here are a few to copy.

û ü ÿ ë ê é è í ì ö õ ø ç ñ ä â

¡ ™ ® © Ω ≈ £ ¢ ∞ § ¶ • º ≠ ÷

(hope this helps boost the post count!!)

I have MS word and go to the webdings, copy and paste and they work or they dont.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, I didn't even know you could get all those characters! So complicated. I would have to have a list and refer back to it every time I needed to type one of those characters, as I'd never remember them unless I was doing it all the time.

Karen

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I actually keep a list right beside my computer ..... Though, the more common letters are way more easy to access on the Mac, usually 2 or 3 keystrokes, where the PC requires 5.

Also, the programs I use for graphic design & word processing usually have a "glyph" or "special characters" chart that is easily accessed directly within the program.

Though, I must admit, I use the special characters A LOT less now, than when I was in university.

Webdings are tough, as there are many different versions out there of the same font. And all the character slots don't match up. Plus, the receiver has to have the same version of the font installed for the correct character to show up. Which is what started this thread tangent, I think. I believe it is a WebDing, or similar font which made that "weird character" in a thread's title.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I like creativeness in writing, but some of these that my computer offers are really strange!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I get my symbols from Microsoft Word. At the top of the page, under "Insert", select "Symbols". This ۞ is there, along with a wider assortment than from that ISO chart. Just "copy", and "paste" into where you need it.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Isn't that the symbol for the beginning or Ramadan?

Well I see it as a snowflake

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

darned default font!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I keep my favorite symbols in my dg journal or blog somewhere ...

♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫ there!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Fa, la, la, la, la to you too, Carrie!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

In one of the many music history courses I studied, I believe in the Renaissance, that phrase, fa la la la la la involved a less than "pure" thought .... if you catch my subtle drift .....

:-)

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

LOL! I was just getting in the holiday mood! We had a few snowflakes this morning!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

LOL, indeed! I have been looking for the compilation CDs I burned of my favorite holiday music .... Oddly enough, mostly from around the 40's .... Big Band, Andrew Sisters, Early Motown, Ella .... all the stuff pops listened to.

I consider the professor who mentioned it more of a serious sot than not .... but, he could have been pulling our impressionable legs .... though, I think he meant it.

Oh, btw, as a side note ..... if anyone remembers the one who was dubbed "The Nowhere Man" .... I took some history studies from him, too, but he wasn't my Renaissance studies instructor, but 20th century music .... Blech ..... though, now, I almost like it .... Even met John Cage, interesting anarchist oddball. Still don't like any of that ...... Well, maybe his 4'33" .... LOL (that was the one he wrote that was silent .... musicians just sitting on stage, looking at a next to blank score)

"I wish that I knew what I know now .... when I was younger ......"

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Ella's my favorite!!! I LOVE 40's jazz

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Me too - on both counts, I have a cd called Big Band Christmas. Great stuff. Also love Sarah Vaughn, Jo Stafford and so many other great vocalists. Would take me forever!

It must be time to settle in for the winter, now. We received an inch of snow yesterday, and it's still here! That's when I begin to count a snowfall as a snowfall, when it can stick around for 24 hours.

I hate it, but it sure does put one in the holiday mood! 'Mary's Boy Child', by Boney M ... ever hear that version?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Here is a YouTube Clip, for those unfamiliar :-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BVtzu59feY

I like Harry Belafonte's version, too .... pops had his christmas album.

8 years + of college choir gives me a lot of "not so mainstream" songs to add to the repertoire ..... I remember doing a version of O Magnum Mysterium, which, when done right, makes ya goosepimply. Of course, the reverb of the music hall has to be just right.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

How cool that you found that on YouTube! It never ceases to amaze me that so much can be found in cyberspace!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, I love Mary's Boy Child by Boney M. Very nice!

Snowflakes yesterday - "heat wave" today! 54 right now.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I think it got to 56 today. Very nice weather, even though it was windy. I actually got about 3 hours of work done in my yard. Made some more progress on a bed I've been working on since early part of fall or late summer. Only have a small section left of that bed to do. Woo hoo! If the weather keeps up like this I can get it done before winter comes in earnest. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I got 3 DL's planted that were sitting bare root in my enclosed porch for awhile. They were pretty dried out. I hope they make it. One looked really dry, but the others not so bad. I soaked them for over 2 hours before getting them in the ground. I also got some other DL's transplanted while renovating that bed. I have a lot of fans of a seedling cross of [(sdlg x Lahaina) x Yuma], and I think I will sell a bunch. I made 2 big clumps out of it, with 17 fans per clump. It's a nice increaser and is a real beauty. Here's a picture of it.

So...settling in for winter, huh? Does that mean everyone posting on this thread has their garden put to bed for the winter? :-) We finally put the hoses away this past weekend.

I enjoy this time of year, with the anticipation of three months rest from the responsibility of the garden. The holidays are not always without some stress and disappointments at our house, but we still manage to enjoy them. I have the luxury of loving snow, since I don't have to shovel it or drive in it much. After the holidays I will probably start thinking about the garden again.

Music is something I listen to more in the winter months too for some reason.
Jen....I am also an Ella fan...Ella and Louise Armstrong's 'A Foggy Day' is one of my favorites. Victor, I enjoy Sarah Vaughn and the Big Bands, Glen Miller is my favorite. Dinah Washington and Brook Benton's 'What a Difference A Day Makes'. I could go on and on. [g] Since I have children who are now young adults, I also manage to find some of the current music worth listening to. Christmas music is a necessity and soon I will be playing that a lot. There is not much that I don't like actually.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Love all those you mentioned, Lis. Nancy Wilson is another favorite. And Peggy Lee. Ever hear of Johnny Hartman? If not, do yourself a big favor and check him out.
