Time to Settle in for the Winter?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Pat, I don't think the warm up will get rid of all the snow, though!

Over in the Cottage Garden forum someone asked about annuals in the cottage garden. So I was looking through my photos for examples to show her. I tell you, it was nice to "take a stroll through my garden" today via photos!

I think we will have this snow, at least some of it, for a while. At least the walking around and driving surfaces will get de-iced I hope. According to the long range predictions a nice Jan. thaw is coming this year. Wouldn't hurt my feelings none. Days are getting longer every day now so slowly it will get closer to spring. It could start now and I would be happy, I seem to be more impatient this year for some reason.
I saw that thread, very nice, and you are right just looking back makes ya feel better about the view outside. Maybe a thread with fav. plants or garden pics from last year would be good. I want to put more annuals along the edge of the garden beds. White alyssum and moss rose I think maybe.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I love moss roses...can never have to many.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

You've hit the nail right on the head. I love working on my garden journal on those gray, cold, frosty days. Just looking at all the photos of the blooms makes me feel warmer, even if it really isn't any warmer!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have 12 containers in my garden and deck area.
I took those snowy days to make the combinations for all of them. Finally done until you guys started. Now I should create the vinyetts in the garden.
Frustrating until the new catalogues come out.
I have found Bluestone2009 and Garden Crossings is on with ner plants.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I have put my GC order in and added to it once already. Trying not to do more. The Bluestone order will go in after New Years so I get the early order 15% off. That one has been changed several times too. Ordered from Brushwood Nursery too. Some honeysuckle and hardy jasmine and that is it. This weather seems to make me want every pretty picture I see, but I am trying not to give in too much.If I wait to put in Bluestone until Jan. then I will just need to get through that short endless month of Feb. and I will be safe. March will have enough nice days for early clean up and mulch fluffing etc. to keep me busy and away from ordering.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Ohhhhhh you only think your done.
Sounds like its time to revive the "What have you ordered for Spring" thread.
Think I will right now.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, you're going on Santa's naughty list, JoAnn!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Seems there is no recession for gardeners!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

youve got that right.
Think of how much pleasure we get from our own backyards so to speak.
It hightens our social gatherings, gives us a work-out,not sure about the waistline for me but it is also an intellectual persuit.
Where can we spend that kind of money for a better return?
Keeps us busy all year
My kids say it "keeps mom from stealing hubcaps"

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, I'm always on Santa's naughty list. He heeeee!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

With my dh laid off I was fretting the other day about "what if I can't order from catalogs this year?". But then I remembered with all my winter sowing and seed swaps and divisions, I don't think I have anything to worry about!

But, boy will I have fun window shopping and day dreaming!!!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Buying plants is my big expense for the year. I am here taking care of my mom, working from home so I don't go anywhere, buy a lot of clothes, gas, go out to eat, go to the movies or on a vacation for the last three years. My garden is my entertainment and I save money all year so I can buy on-line. I would rather go to my old local garden center for more but if I'm lucky I might get one trip there in summer season now. So the internet is my method of choice for breaking the bank on plants. Helps keep me sane, sorta my DH would say. :)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Nice you have worked out a way to garden with out going broke.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Hardy jasmine? Tell me more... please?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Jasminum officinale?? Some say that it is hardy to zone 7? (zone 6 if protected?)

This what I ordered. It is supposed to be hardy in my zone, we shall see.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Ah, Jessamine .... I have heard some talk about Margarita before, so this is what they were referring to! nice.

I will be anxious to see how you do with that. sounds like a great addition, and evergreen to boot!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah, I'll wait and see. We have so little sun, but anything fragrant is a plus!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh ngram! I am so envious! I definitely want a jasmine . . . but everything is on hold this year.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Time for Page 2 I guess: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/939137/
