Time to Settle in for the Winter?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I've been "away" (from DG) for most of the summer and half the fall. Where have I been? In the garden, of course! Most of the chores are done now - beds mulched, cuttings taken and, yesterday, pulled out the dahlia tubers. I think that's it, except to put away all the empty pots and reel up the hose.

I really hate this time of year because I don't want to be cooped up for so long. But DG is my lifeline! (What did we do before computers?)

Are you all ready for the "long winter's nap"?

Unrelated, but awesome: coming home from church this morning, on the side of the road was a HUGE t.v. with a free sign on it (I've always wanted a free sign . . . ). I finally got dh to turn around to go look at it. Well, I made him go knock on the door to find out the condition of it. It's a 2002 Toshiba 50" high-def and is in perfect working order! The guy said it was his son's who didn't want it anymore. So, thank goodness we have a truck - we hauled it home. Coincidentally, we're having Verizon FIOS coming tomorrow for the t.v. service, so we can have them put in an HD box instead of a regular one. I'd say this is our find of the century! (Personally, I think God gave it to us!)

great find!!!!.... I am kicking and screaming all the way to my nap

LCD?

It is best that LCD TV's be kept upright as much as possible, however a short trip (30 mins-1hr) in a car on its side will not cause it damage.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Why can't I find things like that?????

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I agree with Jen! I have been waiting for those over 50" to come down into my price range! Free!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm cutting back the spent plants and piling them up next to the compost bin which is full.
We will interlayer then with houshold waste until they are gone.
Other than that I'll spend more time on the treadmill and in the studio.
Walk outside when weather permits.
The sun comes back in seven weeks.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I get out the long underwear and wool socks, the electric mattress pad, and think about cleaning out all the pots! I do compost the tender annuals - the ones like coleus or begonias who are obviously mush. But the ones that still look ok from in here - I leave them for a while. It's too cold out there for me already! I'm potting up amaryllis and paperwhites!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Past few days have ben in the 70's.
Just when I was getting used to sweats.

(Zone 4a)

That is awesome!!! What a great find...I would say you almost hit the jackpot with that one! Good for you!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow! I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for a free tv! I'd love to have one of those, but don't have the kind of money they want for them.

I don't like this time of year, either. Hate the anticipation of winter. The sun may be coming back in 7 weeks, but it will be much longer than that before we can get out and begin planting again.

Those seven weeks can't get here quick enough. But then, of course, that means I have very little time to prepare for the holidays.

Hey there. Should we all have an online Solstice Party?

Craryville, NY

Great find! However, we vwed off TV over 20 years ago, and we are so happy. We do have a tv and vcr/dvd player, so we can watch movies when we want, but also get alot of reading , talking and happy times without the thing! Enjoy watching for me! You have 21 + years to catch up on for us! Congrats!

We bought a 52 inch last year with the surround sound. We had the surround sound on once............. We could of lived without that TV

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Surround sound is really good for war movies.(not that we have it)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have surround sound when my MIL visits - and I can't turn it off.

I went out this morning to collect my Gaillardia "Oranges & Lemons" seeds - and the darn plant isn't finished blooming yet! That's okay with me.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Jeepers! You are so lucky!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - mine is still going strong too.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I haven't checked mine lately. Haven't really been looking in the gardens at all since I got sick. I will have to check this weekend. I might be surprised. I'm feeling a lot better now. Not 100%, but getting closer. Can't wait to do work in my gardens. Been away from them for 2 weeks now. Too long!

That is too long, Karen. You must be chomping at the bit to get out there again.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

"Oranges & Lemons" seeds.....anyone care to share? That is one I do not have and would love! Maybe I could trade ya something...please let me know.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll keep an eye out for them.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you!!!! ^_^

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I'll never be ready to settle in for the winter, I'm afraid. It will just have to arrive with me very unprepared!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I am chomping at the bit, Candyce. Wanted to do some work today, but not only was it wet, but I was also feeling very tired. Will hopefully get out there tomorrow. Candyce, I am always unprepared for winter. It's my least favorite time of the year, but it is very pretty when it snows and then the sun comes out and everything is all glittery and a winter wonderland.

Pixie, I have O&L seeds I can share with you if Victor doesn't have any. Let me know.

Karen

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I will go out and check my O&L today Pixie... might be some there

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I will be taking the last pics for the November files in most of the gardens.
They dont look bad fir end of season.
Not many flowers but the layout without foliage doesn't look bad.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

oops a pic from yesterday

Oooohhhh, nice, Jo Ann

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I am so excited. This area was grass last spring.
DG'ers showed me how to make a lazagna garden, no digging and turning over the soil.
There are going to be border lilies, asiatics, tall balloon flower, short balloon flower,
allium karavatens, coridilis, erythrum, galanthus, tulips in the mulched area.
Cant wait for spring.
Anyone with suggestions wade in, its part sun by the sidewalk.
This is a comparison from June to November

I dont see the thumbnail I'll try again
