۞ Sweet Interruptions ۞ 45

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Here it is everyone... If I'd waited a couple min. to get ready I could have had it up at the beginning of this thread.

Anyone interested in joining “The Travels of Cedric and Bailey”? Like the traveling gnome, we’re going to do a traveling frog. This is not going to be an open invitation, we want to keep it within people we know so Cedric doesn’t disappear and so the number of participants doesn’t get out of hand; this invitation will be posted on three threads only, Sweet interruptions, Mixed Seed Nuts and Best Thing/Worse Thing and what did I learn today?. When its own thread is started the participants will be set.

The Travels of Cedric and Bailey information:
1. Cedric will fit into the smallest flat rate box with room for some additional luggage.
2. Cedric comes with a set of clothes, bags, dog and journal.

Rules:
1. You must take pictures of Cedric “visiting” your area. A picture of you with Cedric is requested.
2. You must write at least one journal entry, in the enclosed journal, to cover Cedric’s visit.
3. You must do so in a timely manner, about a week between receiving him and shipping him out, for special circumstances additional time can be given, but please email me to get approval/let me know what’s going on.

If you are interested d-mail me; I’d appreciate it if you wanted to include a phone #, I would only use it to locate Cedric if he is missing and you can not be reached online, this is not required to participate.

Example (This would need to be written in the paper journal, though copies can be posted on DG):

10/27/08
I decided today that I was going to go and travel around the US. My friend Cthulu has been telling me stories of his travels to the UK. It sounds like so much fun, but I think that is a bit beyond my budget; I think I can manage to visit all my friends on DG though.

Laura, count me in.
Also you might suggest a delivery confirmation be purchased when sending Cedric.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

ME ME ME... I want Cedric and Bailey to visit me !!!!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

I'll be last on the list, Laura.

This will be fun!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

did we get fat quarter buddies already? I am soooooooooooooo lost.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

You have dmail, Tina Tia...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

thanks hun :)

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

For those wanting to join The Travels of Cedric and Bailey I would really prefer a d-mail. Since the list is going to be set when I open the thread I don’t have a specific place to accept entries and I don’t want to miss anyone.

I’d appreciate it if you wanted to include a phone #; unless you state otherwise only I will use it and I will only use it if Cedric is missing and you can not be reached through normal channels.

I'll post the current list before I go to bed so people can see if I missed them.

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

Jaye, it may be a while until you get your fat quarters from me. I am going out of town to see my 100 yr old Dad on Halloween and will not return until Election Day. Then two days of work and then a Saturday all-day quilting class. I'll try and get things out as soon as I can; I know you are anxious to get a package. But don't start bugging the mailman until at leat the week of Nov.9. I'll post when I mail them.
I did get all of my Christmas Blocks out before leaving and I decided not to enter any other swaps until after I get back.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Is today Christmas and someone forgot to tell me????? It's been a great day (other than having to retrieve run-away Woody twice). Had a good morning of review at the med center, a wonderful birthday lunch with my DD and aunt, did some quick shopping with DD, stopped at a quilt shop on the way home and signed up for a quilting class that will begin the first of the year, enjoyed a demonstration of two new machines (I'm asking Santa for the Husqvarna Viking topaz 30 sewing/embroidery machine), got home and checked the mail - now here's the real Christmas part - there were THREE packages for me! Whoo Hoo! Talk about hitting the jackpot!

One was from Juanita (rvnsbrk) with the recipe box swap in it. It is soooo cute! Included was a kitchen towel with an appliqued rooster and great recipes. Details on the recipe box swap thread. I love it, Juanita!

The second was from BJ with the fat quarter swap. Love the colors, BJ! Couldn't have picked any better myself. Now it will be a challenge to find 10 different ones to coordinate and look as nice. Thank you for doing this swap. I'll try not to take too long finding fabrics to send to you.

And the third was from Jaye. Imagine coming home from a quilt shop with ideas swirling in your head to find a quilting book in your mailbox! Jaye, you are such a sweetie to share your book. I'll be snuggled up under a warm blanket studying your book this evening for sure.

See why it seems like Christmas?!!!

Glad you got them, Debra. Just a note... that white background one with the flowers, is a piece of fabric I inherited from my mom (the family quilt maker)... and it's very dear to my heart... you make something really special out of those pieces... ok?

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Oh Debra, your mailman was good to you today! Three Dave's Gardeners packages in one day, how wonderful that is! BJ, you're sharing your mom's heirloom fabric. Don't make me cry. That's so sweet!

Will 20 fat quarters be enough to make a rag quilt? Diaper bag? Or lap quilt?

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Awwww, BJ, are you serious? I will definitely use it for something special. I'm thinking maybe saving these fat quarters for my very first 'real' quilt that will be made in the quilting class this January. Or at least the one that was your mother's. Maybe your mother's fabric will lend some knowlege and skill to the project. It could be a 'something old, something new' quilt. What do you think?

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Deborah, there are many others with more experience, but it will depend on what size blocks you want to use and how many blocks you can get from a fat quarter. Keep in mind that rag quilts require a 1/2" seam allowance instead of the usual 1/4". That would mean a 6"x6" square ends up being a 5"x5" square once sewn together. (is that right?)

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Ok, I think I'll just wait until all the fabric is in and then decide after looking at the fabric. Getting that inspired feeling before I really know how to sew all the different kinds of stitiches. I need to practice more before I use these fat quarters. I don't want to mess them up.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

wow Debra does sound like Christmas for you with some very special things ...super

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Isn't this fun? I would love to do another fat quarter swap after the first of the year... maybe every couple months or so... any suggestions?

I just can't wait now to see what Debra finds to coordinate with those... that's the real challenge.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

BJ, I like the sound of that swap, every 3 months or so?
Debra, nice going on the pressies today!
LK

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Debra, the book is yours! Kel got me one when it first came out and I think it should be in all serious quilters' library, besides a technical book on quilting. I am glad you signed up for the quilting class. You will get instant feedback and learn all the little tricks needed to make quilting more enjoyable.
I love the fabric you sent to her BJ! An heirloom one, wow.. that's so nice of you. AND of course, we just can't stop at one fat quarters swap, we need to do it quarterly if possible!!
Deborah, you'll soon get your copy and you can see what ideas you might gather for your next project.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok, someone correct me if I'm wrong... I've been doing some figuring on how many squares it would take to make a lap quilt.
According to the site I was reading, a lap quilt measures 40" wide, 60" long.
So, that's four 10"(finished) squares wide and six 10"(finished) squares long. That's 24 10"(finished) squares for one side, another 24 for the other side.
So, we'd cut the squares 11" X 11" before seams... or piece our squares to be that size before setting them together. Right?

So, to answer Deborah's question... each fat quarter should cut 2 11"X11" squares. You'll have 20 fat quarters, so you'll have enough for 40 squares. You would need 4 more fat quarters to make both sides of the lap quilt...

Please... someone correct me if I'm wrong.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Forgot to assure Janice not to worry!
Anytime will be a good time to get those FQ Janice. I won't be able to start on another quilt anyway!! Enjoy yourself and be safe. Wow, 100 years old!! What's his secret, Janice?
My great grandmother lived till 103. She chewed tobacco till the end!

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

My daughter made each other a lap quilt for Christmas one uear. We used 5 in pieces. 10 across. and 13 down. We used a baby quilt batting, with 45 in fabric for backing. We used assorted Christmas fat quarters to make outs and made our own pattern.

I'm trying to make broccoli dip without the garlic cheese roll and the mushrooms. Hmmmmm????

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

You are right BJ. I assume you're talking of the raggedy lap quilt, where you need a bigger seam allowance.
I always make my lap quilt 6 inches wider. But I do conventional quilts with whole cloth backing.
Seen some nice looking flannels too.. tempting..

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Send some over Audrey!

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, Jaye... a rag lap quilt... that's what I was talking about.

So, 5" squares would call for cutting it 6". And one FQ should get 12 that size... right?

So, 10 across and 14 down would be 140 squares (one side), or 280 squares front and back.
12 6" squares per FQ X 20 FQ = 240 squares. We'd still need 4 more FQ to make a lap quilt.

Maybe next time we'll swap 12 fat quarters instead...

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

BJ, I may have some to send with your color scheme. I'll wait till you get Deb's fat quarters. So, don't you fret.. we can work it out.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)
