October blooms 4

South, TX

GoldLeaf, I have not counted lately. Eighty something and leaves I have planted. I have lighted baker's racks in my sunroom with natural light also.

I have two IGS shelves with great lights. They are large stands. My standards are big. I have trimmed a few, but some are very big. Here are some pictures.

Nice plants, Sally. Do I see a Newtown's Quiet Resolve? Mine was giant and I needed the space so when Jacquie came over the other day I gave her mine ...........plus everything blocking my way on the shelves I so desperately needed for all these sinningias, Kohlerias and Episcias............

No, Gail, I do not have that one. I have seen it online, maybe yours. They are so pretty!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am going to grow some avs this spring. In fact, I need to order some leaves. I think I will order from the Velvet Leaf this time. I have two trays down from Cedar Creek............

Gail: Your Strep's and Sinningia's are so gorgeous, as always! You sure have that "touch" and can really grow em! I love the micro mini sinningia's and that 'Razzmatazz' is really pretty! I like the color of that bloom! Yes, I have planted the little micro mini's in wine glasses, I got the idea from RainGazer!

Sally: Your plants are so pretty! Love the stands ... so professional! I wish I had space and could afford the IGS type shelves with those nice lights. I know those lights are much better than the cheap things I bought at Wal-Mart. I didn't get the shop lights on chains, I just bought the cheap $7.98 things.

When you do it right, it shows.

Gail: The flowers on 'Amizade' remind me so much of Chirita tamiana.

Hi,
I posted on this forum but I will post here also... I am in need of HELP.... I have thrips.. What do I use to get rid of them? I want to dunk them all in something but don't want to kill my streps... Do they live on kohleria's? and Sinns? Please help me as I am about to flip out...
Hugs,
Susan

Hey SuzyQ ... so sorry about your problem with thrips. They will prey on most plants! Isn't it awful what we have to put up with to grow indoor plants?!%# I have heard that neem is a great product for these critters!

I googled and found this link that Allison posted a couple of years ago! Scroll down the page to where it talks about thrips: http://www.bloomlovers.com/

edited to say: When you click on that link ... over on the left hand side of the page, click on the thing that says bugs and av care.

Suzy: No problem! I just sent you a d-mail telling you not to worry about our swap, LOL! I could have waited til spring. Don't worry, I will treat them when they arrive, not a problem at all!

You take care ... cheer up and remember, they are just plants! Once you treat them, all will be okay. I guess I don't make such a great plant mom as some of y'all, cause I don't get attached to any of them anymore! LOL, I got too tired of getting depressed when something kicked the bucket, which has happened quite a few times in the 40+ years I've been growing! I now just think of it as a lesson in life and boy have I had my share of lessons! I'm surprised the Good Lord even lets me have plants in my care since I've killed so many! I never was a good student, hee hee ... I'm short on patience. I love to dibble, dabble and play in the dirt but if something dies, oh well ... I know there's always going to be another to take it's place.

Oh ... and I'm not really a bad mom, aunt, sister, friend when it comes to people or pets ... just seem to be a not so good plant mom sometimes!

Susan, the first thing to do with thrips is remove any buds and flowers from your plants. Thrips are common and I have never seen an Optimara in stores without lots of them. I laugh sometimes and call Optimara a thrips factory.

http://www.reedsgreenhouse.com/thrips.htm

Sally, your stands are beautiful, neat, clean and organized. What is the trailer top right on the first photo?

Gail, I don't use a particular bloom booster. never have. I suppose one could call 12-36-14 a blossom booster and I have used that.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Just thought I would ask about the bloom booster. Susan, don't cry and your plants will be just fine. I read what Goldleaf posted and that is exactly what I told you to do on the other thread. If you have AVid, use it!

Susan: This looks like a good thing to try: http://www.gardensalive.com/product.asp?pn=8101

$16.95 a pint but that pint makes 12 gallons so it sounds very reasonable. And, I think I would trust this product if it can be used on fruits and veggies too! Apparently it's not a harsh chemical.

Now, I don't know what plants the person used the Raid on. I'm not sure if it was Gessie's so I don't know if I'd use it unless someone can confirm they've tried it for their gessie's without any harm.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I have 8 trays to go with the debudding then spray... You all have made me feel so much better... I thought they were all going to die.... I took all there trays away cleaned with bleach and still cutting buds...May have to do the spraying tomorrow not sure as I type....
thank you all so much and Gail I am going to buy the 3or 5 gallon tube of marathon for 100 bucks as I can't find it in smaller sizes...

Susan

Goldleaf, are you talking about Myakka Trail, the one you asked about on the top right?

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

I have used the Pyola from gardens alive in my greenhouse. Besides the funky odor, I was not impressed. It did kill the critters--but left an oily residue on somethings, defoliated others and still others had a phytotoxic reaction despite being sprayed in the evening. I would guess the oil in it was the culprit-- not the pyrethrins. I think it may be best left to the veggies.

(Zone 1)

Thank You Hillbilly_Gran for that info! Oh, how I love this forum where folks share info to help each other. I for one wouldn't want an oily residue all over the foliage on my plants and I sure wouldn't want something to defoliate them. That stuff doesn't sound like it would be good for gessie's at all!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

I do believe that's it, Sally. Myakka Trail. I like the dark green glossy leaves.

Susan, your streps are so pretty. I know you must hate removing those lovely blossoms but afetr you treat for thrips, they'll be back better than ever. You'll see.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Thank you so much ... I can stand cutting them off so long as I did not loose all my plants... Daves won't let me post more at this time as I keep trying but they don't show up... I have one that really shows the damage that thrips did to some of my blooms.

Susan

Susan, they are all so beautiful but I agree with GoldLeaf ... now that you are treating them and getting rid of the thrips, they will come back and bloom even more beautifully!
