She's About To....# 24

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

That nice clean jungle is wonderful.. I can already imagine the mess at the end of winter when everything has dropped its leaves and is whining to go outside... it will look like my little atrium still does.. yes, I am guilty.. it still has last winters leaves on the floor! They are in a sort of pile.. been swept up several times and re-scattered... been meaning to clean it up.. guess I will have to do it before things move back in for the winter.. plants are already thinking about 'saving' their places and some of them have grown larger. Wish I had that much space. 1/2 will go into the atrium which is about 6 x 14 and the other 1/2 will have to tough it out in the potting shed which is two walls the brick of the house and the top and 2 walls clear fiberglass with a heater.. I keep it about 50 in there all winter. Here is a pic of it looking in from the door.. My father and I built it... it is 6 x 7 ft

Nice place you got there

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

.... had a tiny space... made very good use of it! I LOVE that spot and it was the most useless spot on the property..now is almost the most used!

And your babies will be coming in soon there, so nice!

nice atrium! Brought most of the remaining winter prisoners in tonight. Still have the brugs out. This is just 2/3 of one wall. The other walls are packed too!

Guess I am home alone on this thread.
Sorry to leave you all earlier but had to work on DH's pc. It was getting all crazy. Now it is midnight and I am wired up, bet I won't be when the alarm goes off.

Everyone seems to have really nice homes for all of their tropicals. Quite a setup AuntB, Lav you look like you have lots of windows is it an atrium?, love your atrium Lhasa looks like a great place. How cold does zone 7 get?

Costco had some beautiful orchids tonight!!! I was tempted but I am saving my pennies. They also had their bulbs all marked down. Bulbs I would of had to plant the orchid all I had to do was carry it!

Lav, my mandevilla (pink) already got those little white fuzzy bugs, so I had to wash it all down. I have a small red but so far nothing on it. So many bug problems so early!!!

DH says 40 more feet of wire and I will have power in the garden room, it is all done inside but now has to run thru the house to the fuse box.
Sorry Lav, I knew Nebraska, fingers did what they wanted, still DH likes to tell the story....LOL

Well sweet dreams everyone!

Good morning everyone. I'm trying to decide IF I'm going to work today, sore and stuffed up... TY all on my "greenhouse" My basement is unfinished for the most part, the X and I did put up some dividing walls and a new staircase after we moved in when Drew was just under 2 yrs old.. (he'll be 20 in Aug) it had a foot of water when we first looked at the place.. had it dug out and new tile run on 3 sides..about 10 yrs ago I had the inside west end dug out and a sump pump installed. I've patched cracks and now need more dirt outside and some support work done on the inside, it's a walk out type with the garage on the east end. It's not so clean down there, and Tammie, I still have a little swept up pile of leaves waiting for the trash can.. The BIG pile of leaves went out a few weeks ago, so you are doing fine. I do feel very fortunate to have it and the know-how to make it work for my "babies". I'll try to keep it a little warmer, maybe 60 cause I think the hibs will like it better.. the basement is about 2X as wide as the plant area and the stairwell in the middle. I'm hanging plastic at the open end, off the stairwell studs this year to keep the "warmth" contained. The heat tube thingy going to my bathroom upstairs is a little ajar from the vent and I leave it be to add heat (backward divine intervention or something? or too lazy or knowledgeable to fix it, tried once and gave up haha) and when it's 0 outside I add more with a little space heater. Need to fix an existing light fixture and re-position or if it can't be fixed I need to get another 1 or 2 lights for that end. Joyce, I wanted to say I think it's so cool and sweet that DH is telling Hottie tales.. bless him for helping you get your plants all content. If you guys want I WILL add to the winterizing post, but right now I need to make up my mind about work.. I'll "work" harder here if I stay home, probably, so guess I'll go in so I can give the ol bod a break.. lol Glad you hotties are getting good Dr reports and your little fur babies, too AnjL.. Didn't get Becky called last night, but maybe I'll check in with her later today and update, see if she wants me to have my lil computer geek son help her with the connect, (told her to call me back and I'd hook them up via phone) but I hope Momma gets to go "home" so Beck can go home to get some real rest. Poor Hottie Beckie will never catch up to us, now! Maybe I should print out this thread and fax it to her @ the hospital??? lol -probably 80 pages long by now..

Louise, I love the pix of you and your family, maybe soon when Christina and Siobhan are here we can get something I can post. Right now when I look in to a mirror I see a refection but it does not look like me. It is a very swollen puffy version. My hair is also falling out but that happens every time I’m on antibiotics. You are right we just keep going and doing what we can.

Karen, you go get yourself a new scarecrow and any other Halloween decorations that will make you feel good. Happy is the best state to be in and if a 6 dollar doll will do it then so be it.

Linda Kay, I have the Blue Satin Rose of Sharon. They are a perennial Hibiscus, but ROS are bushes/shrubs. They lose there leaves here in the Northeast in the winter. The can grow 10 to 12” and can be cut to make a tree shape similar to what we call a Burg standard.

Yes Phyllis that is correct for the Rose of Sharon. It is an extremely popular shrub here in the north east. I also have pink, rose color, double white and double purple. Along with a new baby that is called silver tip which is a variegated leave with a sliver white flower.

Audrey thanks for the vitamin tip, I’m going to check them out.

Thanks wolfie for the pix of the Lochroma, your little pink burgs are doing great.

Karen that lions tail is gorgeous, Wofie thanks for the summery, even if it is not a perennial here for me I am going to give it a shot as an annual.

Audrey, I have a double white peony, I’ll need to read up on how to divided, I think it need to be done in the spring. I’ll check it out but I will get you a piece either way. Posted is pix of it from this past spring.

AuntB, do you treat those plants with anti-fungal powder? You sure do have a jungle down there. I have not seen mine yet. Lisa bought the powder that Clemen told her to and she is going to have to bring each one outside tomorrow and apply it. According to the label it should not be applied in the house. I already knew that because Clemen told me to do it outside first.

Hello to all the hotties and hansoms I miss in this post. I have only been able to get out of bed for an hour or so each morning so I have to read 24 hours of post and can only type so much before getting very tired. Love to you all and have a great day.

Sorry but I cannot post the pix. The must be to large and I can’t get it to go though. I will crop and reduce the size and post it later.

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Now I know why, when there are 2 people posting at the same time the dial up person loses their post. AuntB you were posting at the same time as I was. I always type my posts into word so I can re-do the post if I lose it. I will post the pix later Audrey, right now I need to shower for the Dr appt and get moving.

Bonnie just love the pics of your progress. Unfortunately my sunroom has to be heated with a space heater. Gonna add a humidifier too this year. Donna how is the healing going? Morning hotties!

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Goodmorning Hotties,

I tried and tried to finish my posts last night but my unreliable ISP wouldn't let me navigate anything on the web.

Lavender I will check out the peony site. Thanks

I love everybody's winter homes for their plants. I have a mandevilla that will probably stay in my sunroom. We have a wood stove to heat it in winter. It can get cool at night but warms up quickly. My one and only brug may live there too, or my office. I don't know yet.

I bought a greenhouse in Aug. and it is still waiting for hubby to put together. I may be waiting until the twelth of never. He's not very handy and really hates to build anything. I think when he goes to Costa Rica in three weeks to fish, I'll have my SIL help me put it together. If not then it's back to the old front porch again.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

lol here too but no frost thank goodness!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

AuntB, oh please keep adding to the winter instructions. I learned from you on one of your posts not to sit the pots on the cold concrete, which I did last year and is probably why a couple plants didn’t do so well. I wouldn’t want my tootsies on the concrete when the room is only 60degrees! BURRRRRRH! Now I put socks on them…LOL not really I cut pieces of 2X4’s and they are all above the floor. The tile floor in the solar room isn’t a problem, it is dark and absorbs heat all day and releases it at night.

Hope all is ok with Becky. After missing 4 days I couldn’t catch up on the Hottie and Handsome thread!

Donna I hope everyday gets better for you and I know it will….just takes time. When I think of the difference between a hardy Rose of Sharon and a tropical or hardy Hibiscus is the size of the blooms to me. Rose of Sharon has a smaller bloom. Donna does your Rose of Sharon spread? I have been given several starts and wondered?

Peonies are usually divided in the fall. I planted some new ones this fall that I started from Wally World this spring in pots. Couldn’t decide where to put them, which is always a problem for me.

I have lost a lot of posts here lately and I don’t have dial up, so I think something else must be going on. This just started the last few days.

We put that vapor barrier on the garden room and I am going to have to add a DE-humidifier this winter, guess cause the temp is so cool unlike the house that is warmer the building sweats inside which is not good! Last spring I took down all the insulation and used that kilz paint and did the walls, then put the insulation back in and then added the interior wall. You walk in from outside and my glasses fog up.

I may take off Thursday and Friday. It was 41 degrees today so cold is on its way. Still have stuff to do and need to take my Mom up and see if I can get her some assistances of some kind. She is drawing SS from my Dad who passed away in 1969 so that should give you a clue on what little she lives on. Since food has risen it is really getting tough. I have been picking up the slack for sometime now, between medical bills, utilities, food and rent, but I would like to retire someday also. She isn’t going to like it!

It has taken so long for me to get this keyed that I am sure 10 posts have been made since I started this.....LOL

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Morning all! I actually slept in a little late today, it sure felt good! Have to start organizing my plants for the RU Saturday, cleaning the pots and labeling so I will be pretty busy. I sure wish there were a sure fire prediction for when first frost will be.....I'm going to end up the "day of" working like a dog to dig banana trees up, wrap Brugs, etc.etc.etc.....

Bonnie I've been wanting to ask you about your use of the 20-20-20 since several have mentioned it being the best for Brugs......I know it's hard to find now, but you mentioned sending someone's plant in a Miracle Grow 20-20-20 box....I didn't see any where I shopped. Scott's - Peters doesn't make it anymore either I don't think. I did however FINALLY find

Ferti-Lome Geranium, Hanging Basket and Pansy Soluble plant food 20-20-20.....For use on all blooming and foliage plants - Promotes large blooms and deep green foliage, use every time you water.

Found it at a little independant nursery...Do you use this every day on your whole yard during the growing season, Brugs and other plants as well? I am NOT experienced in fertilize....Have always just used regular Miracle Grow for growth and then Super Bloom for blooms. BTW, Kenboy says that Brugs don't like the ingredient in Super Bloom products.

Donna I think you are right! I will just head to Walmart sometime today and get me another scarecrow!! Thanks for making me feel better. Love you all so much!!!!!!!!!!!
