Wolfie! TY, buddy!
Oh my, it's starting to get bushy! What are you going to do with it this winter? (Oh, sorry never did get back to the Winterizing post) Did you strip your big bruggies? ;)
Wolfie I found this info on Google
Lion's Tail is a striking, orange, autumn blooming perennial that is suitable for gardens in Zones 7 and up. It is particularly gorgeous when planted in front of Mexican Bush Sage, Salvia leucantha. The flowers of the Lion's Tail dry very well and can keep their color for two years or more. For a fragrant Lion's Tail, try Mint Scented Lion's Tail!
that can get 8 ft (2.4 m) tall in its single growing season. The stems are strongly angled (square in cross section) and the leaves are in pairs opposite each other. The leaves are smooth with coarsely toothed margins, triangular in shape and 2-5 in (5.1-12.7 cm) long. The flowers are borne in rounded, spiny clusters, 2-4 in (5.1-10.2 cm) across, that encircle the stems so that it looks like the stems are growing right through the middle of the clusters. As the stems elongate, new flower clusters continue to develop above the older ones. The tubular flowers that peek out of the spiny heads are orange and furry, like a lion's ear, so they say. The flowers are about 1 in (2.5 cm) long and curve downward.
Location
Annual lion's ear was originally native to tropical and subtropical Africa, as are the 30 other species in the genus. However, it is now naturalized all over the world in appropriate climates, where it grows along road shoulders, in abandoned fields and in disturbed areas. Annual lion's ear occurs throughout Florida and much of the American south. It is listed as an invasive garden plant in Australia and a pest plant in Hawaii, but annual lion's ear is not really a serious pest in most areas, because it mainly grows in areas already highly disturbed, or where the original vegetation has been destroyed, and it doesn't seem to displace native species.
Culture
Light: Full sun to intermittent shade.
Moisture: Annual lion's ear grows rapidly and vigorously with regular watering, but still hangs on during drought.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 8 - 11. Annual lion's ear reseeds itself and is capable of maintaining a self sustaining population in USDA zones 8-11. In cooler areas where the growing season might not be long enough for seeds to mature, it will have to be planted each spring.
Propagation: Annual lion's ear is easy to grow from seed, and under favorable conditions will self sow.
Annual lion's ear holds its flowers high above most other annuals and perennials to make it easier for you to watch the hungry hummingbirds and butterflies that congregate around them.
Usage
Annual lion's ear is a coarse textured, rather gangly plant and not well suited for formal or very tidy gardens. It is great, however in a butterfly garden or a naturalized shrub and perennial garden, especially behind shorter, bushier plants. Annual lion's ear is tall and slender, and looks good behind salvias and butterfly bushes. The flowers are produced up high, above most of the other annuals and perennials. The hummingbirds really love this plant. They hover next to a flower or even perch right on a cluster and drink for 10 seconds or more at a time, longer than at most any other kind of flower. The hummers keep coming back to the pretty orange flowers all day long.
Features
Annual lion's ear is carefree and easy to grow, and an absolute favorite with hummingbirds. The seedlings are easy to identify and it is not hard to keep this semi-invasive weed under control.
The flowers of annual lion's ear are very similar to those of its relative, lion's ear (L. leonurus), which is a very attractive ornamental shrub for zones 9-11.

Oh wolfie, if she is tall and orange, please please can I trade or send postage for seeds?
I have fallen in love with orange flowers! I have an orange and white flower garden and that is so cool.
I am hitting enter before I lose this one. I keyed two posts today and have lost all of them!
I googled Leonotis too and got almost the identical information. Very interesting plant.
It looks like yours Wolfie, and would love the mint scent. If you would care to share a few seeds I would be interested. If hummingbirds would love it I would too.

lilsista, please explain the ants and bees with opening the buds. We have bees. What kind of ants? Good grief, I have so much to learn.
hey Joyce..hows things? That leonotis is cool. I love reseeders...especially thuggy ones. Some day I shall have no weeds, just garden thugs growing all around! lol
is anybody having problems with the comp or is it my ISP? I hate it when it takes 10 minutes to go from one place to the next. arrrrrgh!
mine seems to be ok...but dg does do that from time to time.
Hi lav, I have keyed 3 posts today and have lost 2 of them. I am doing fine. Just busy after being off for 4 days. Getting work caught up and Mom settled. Haven't been home one evening before 7. DH still can't believe you came from Iowa to swap plants.....LOL. He keeps telling everyone who stops by here about it....
from Nebraska ...lol...but we were already in Missouri not far from you..
It was a pretty funny trip...trying to find your house. We kept asking where the airstrip was and no one knew...some would say. I think I heard there was one. LOL
Jeanne,
Peonies have a thick outer covering over the buds and the ants and bees need to eat away that covering in order for them to open up...
My DSD from Texas sprayed them one year cause it had ants all over it..
LOL
no flowers that year...
The smell is too die for..
And as far as what kind of ants...I don't know what kind..just that the ants and bees have to open them....LOL
Next year i'll ask them what kind they are...LOL
But as I don't have fire ants I don't know if they'd be attracted to them or not...
Just wanted you to know....
Jeanne you can lurk on the peony forum...there is a guy there from texas that grows lots of peonie. I don't think fire ants were a problem on them. He did plant them very shallow there in texas, so you might check that forum out on tips for growing them in your zone.
Okay, guys, I have to check in and then zzzz. I have updated the list, in the middle of the post, so everybody please look and d-mail me back if you consider yours closed or not. We also need to really look for the italicized Hotties and Handsomes as they have not got their one plant.
Good night all. Sweet brug dreams and good health. Peg
Nite Peg! You rock!
Evening Hotties.. (told Lav I was going to collapse but I haven't.. may be I'm too tired to collapse).. moved a bunch of plants today... Pink Beauty was down when I got home and versi's biggest flush of the year was looking pretty ragged.. I have her tied to the retaining wall..so she held.. the other ones are on the opposite side and the wall is higher on that side... they're all just starting to open buds and I expect Thur or Fri you'll all be sayin "Enough with the pics, AuntB!".. Still have Antique Lace (she's blooming pretty) and Cassie's Curls on the deck, cause they are small enough to be protected by the lattice.. here's part of the parade.. DD Melissa (Mel) was grand marshall
I didn't know that about peonies! I've tried to grow peonies without success. I want a double white! They're beautiful! 'Course, I want everything I see!
I've been having trouble losing my mouse, or it freezes up. I think Dell's messing with my pc again. I've almost got it paid off! But I'll NEVER get another Dell!
Peggy, nite dear.. I wanted to add, I saw where Sandy was so lucky (like me:) and is getting a big box of brug cuttings from Dollie... Sandy IF you don't mind, I'll send your cuttings to the Newbie Hotties, I know I was overwhelmed when I got all mine.. You all know I LOVE giving brug cuttings to newbies with few or no brugs.. so you Newbie Hotties, d-mail me and I'll get you fixed up.
Aunt B has to open the peonies? Oh, excuse me, ants and bees.
I'm too tired. LOL!
Meg! :)
Okay one more post w/pic and I'm a couch potato.. neck, low-back, knee aches... but this is how it looks right now... they are getting re-acquainted with one another so it's kinda like a party down there... Isn't nice iris to meet DG people? nice that you did girl!
she was so sweet and i love that we can all be in a circle (dg)that trades plants its so wrong to pay for things that grow wild in nature ... things that are hard to propagate i get ... idk im conflicted .. any way i love when people get the plants they want w/o having to decide to eat or garden .. broke people can garden too lol
i agree Iris
How fun..what a lucky hottie! It is great meeting dgers! Some day want to meet all the hotties! I picked a name for my bloomin brug and gonna work hard on trying to register her. Naming her Bonny Pink after our sweet hottie Bonnie and the best brug Mom! Gonna work on getting her registered and spreading her around for the growth notes.
