2nd. Annual DG Christmas Workshop "Victorian Santa" Pt.3

Victoria Harbour, ON

Are you understanding the process so far? tired so might not be making sense...

But I'll continue just a bit further...

Know some of you are fretting...

In the kit I've sent 2 - 4" pieces of velvet hoping that it compliments what you've chosen...nice to have the hands a different color..included in the kit as well are 2 little pieces of wire....

Victoria Harbour, ON

Not only am I tired but batteries are as well..so have put them on the charger for 1/2 hr. or so..time to eat...

Glenview, IL

Whew, OK second time around, For some reason LOL had enough of the red material to do it right!!
OK now, I am on the same page. Got the robe and sleeves done and ready to go...and this time yep it WAS so simple.
Cheesy grin,

Will tackle building the body when it gets here. But it looks easy, much better with pictures!
Thank you for taking time today.

Working on the groom suit for Braedon..took a few more photo's

As I explained in another post before my batteries faded,
I've sent you 2 pieces of velvet 4" square and 2 thin pieces of wire...

This is where your little styrofoam balls come in handy

Centre the ball in the middle of the 4" square then folding it around the ball attach the wire and twist tightly..

Now the large ball..it's used to form the head...

get yourself a sharp knife (watch those fingers) and slice off the roundness on one side..took a photo to show you it's just the roundness only..

This is what you should have

This is where the glue comes in...be very/very careful or you can end up with major burn...I put some on the styro ball, a good amount because it will hold the face and the face is quite heavy....then place the top of head to match the top of the ball...the beard will hang over the ball but that's fine, you will never see it...

Don't mind me, you'll be using clear or white glue for your gluegun but I've tons of gold sticks left from the giant trio candle set we did a few years ago...lol...now they were something...

Now what I did was hold the balls covered in velvet with two fingers and give it a squish..what this does is creat a little cupped hand rather than a circle ball, then I take the hand and take the arm wire and push it through in the middle of the wired hand, DON"T push too hard or it will go right through the hand....

That's about it for tonight, but just to give you an idea I took the styrofoam ball and pushed it into the nail..IT IS NOT done at this point in the project, it's after we dress Santa, but wanted to show you how he's progressing...

To date, all this is been the hardest part of the project, and it wasn't was it...the dressing him and decorating him, adding the hair and beard is the FUN part...

Now I would suggest because I AM tired that if you don't understand something, write it down, so that you can ask so when we do the actual project all your questions will be answered....at least I hope to have the answer

Betty, I don't think I received a group d-mail blast from you. Could you send me one or again if that's the case?

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

hey I LIKE that gold glue...makes santa appear to have a halo! teehee!

I does seem really simple! Moms coming for a visit next week, so maybe I can make hers while she is here and let her oooh and ahhh over it and then send it home with her as a surprise! lol! will save on my shipping costs to her once its done :)

Victoria Harbour, ON

That's a great idea...

Deborah, which group d-mail were you referring to??? the one that I gave the pricing? material list? those are the only 2...we've not started our santa's..some just did their robes so it would be easier when the time came...then because some were concerned I thought I'd show photo's up to this point just so that you know when you get your kit (and you will be getting yours soon) that you will have an idea of just what each piece is for...

Now did I confuse you ???? lol

Off to bed..long day, accomplished much, had wanted it to be just a day to sit and relax and recoup from my trip...others had different ideas...isn't that always the case....

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Betty it was mentioned in this post where you are explaining cutting out the pattern. I'm trying to catch up with y'all and I'm re reading everything. I'm scared I'm going to screw my fabric up cutting it wrong.

Hi Deborah...

Don't be scared. Make your measurments on newspaper.
Then pin them on material, and cut...

...My problem was that, LOL wanted trim. that first time. Well now I just made the second one pretty, like Betty said.
I get a little dyslexic at times, thats why i had to practice. Second time for me was a charm!

You will do just fine, my friend.
Betty's picture are a real big help too.
LOL, I should have waited but was anxious.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Judy, the thing is my news paper is shorter than 45". Now what do I do? tape two papers together? My fabric is 45". I'm doing the very first set of instructions as a test run and got stuck when I noticed my newspaper was too short even opened up into two pages. What do I do, Judy?

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Is it 45" going from the top to the bottom of the newspaper or going from left to right? I'm getting the hebeejeebees.:(

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Yoowhooooo, Betty, Judy, Gita, MARION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Betty Donna was supposed to send her money to you but she wants her kit sent to my house. She's bravely letting me make her Victorian Santa. And I can't even cut out the newspaper pattern. Geezh! Some seamstress I am. Stuck on the very first instruction.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

I'd just tape the newsprint together to make it over 45" that way you can cut out the right size pattern. As long as you tape along the entire seam... it will hold up long enough to cut your pattern out.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Hi Deborah, late checking in but AnjL is right. Just tape your paper together to make a larger sheet. Use masking tape if you want to works really well.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Just checking in...Deborah, the 45" is what would go around you I.e. like a skirt..the shorter dimension would be you length i.e. shoulders to floor...

Check back in when I get to work..

Pacifica, CA

judy, i beat you on comotion! lol

mine was from a dress ,already had seams and a hem had to re- modify from a half circle geeez but i finally got it!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Too cute..

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Okey Dokey, I can do this, Yea!!!!!!!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'm glad, once you do the 1st one you can just make a zillion santa's decorating each in different fashions...lol

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Have to say that after seeing your instructions for the body, I am really excited. Now to just get the robe made. I have the fabric, but still need the trim (which I likely have stuck somewhere in my sewing basket.

This is going to be soooo cool!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Good luck...

Glenview, IL

Hope you find your trim!

Deborah, yay, I see you got that figured out. So did you get brave to cut the robe?

Well, hello Liz, Bout time you came out to play. LOL, I could just picture you figuring out measurements...and I could hear you hollering at it to work!!
glad you got it figured out...hehehe, beat me? I didn't have a commotion, made that first one and turned out perfect...ROFL, that is for a mini v-santa! Second one turned out perfect...But you know, got to follow instructions sometimes.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I almost called you last night, Judy, then I realized how late it was and decided not.

I've got the newspapers on the tape and I'll start just as soon as I go to the workshop to get the masking tape. Thank y'all for all the tips. I was quite beside myself until all y'all rescued me.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Betty, I need you to explain the measurements again. First you post the skirt is 45 x 14, the sleeves are 45 x 22 1/2, and the shawl is 18 x 11. Now you say that you cut the hood down to 22 inches. Did I miss something? Is the shawl/cape/hood all the same item.
Linda Kay

Victoria Harbour, ON

Original pattern sizes.....

Robe: depending on what width you have purchased - either will be fine

1 - 14” X 35" piece

OR

1 - 14" x 45 depending on the width

Sleeves:

2 - 10" X 18" pieces if using 36" wide

OR

2 - 10" X 22 1/2" if using 45" wide

Collar/Shawl:

Cut 1

18” x 11” - could go as wide as 22" if desired...

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

so shawl could be cut 22" x 11" ??

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

The X sign means??? length times width? or width times length?

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

yes x = 'times'

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Anjl what is the first number? Is it length? Is there a rule to know whether or not the first number represents a certain measurement?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

If the size says 45 x 14, then the cut piece should measure 45 inches wide, and 14 inches tall.
Hope this helps.

Since most materials come in 45 inch width, all you need to do is square it off, (make one end straight) and measure up 14 inches. Should be pretty easy.
Linda Kay

Victoria Harbour, ON

my 'x' refers to the word 'by' 14" by 36"

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Deb, I think the smaller numbers are the top to bottom on everything except the sleeves. If I'm wrong, somebody needs to tell me!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Got it. 14" length by 45" width.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Audrey, the sleeves smaller number are top to bottom also. Sew the short ends together.
Linda Kay
