2nd. Annual DG Christmas Workshop "Victorian Santa" Pt.3

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Betty,

How did you finally decide to package the faces so they won't break?

Gita

Victoria Harbour, ON

Gita, everything I'm sending can fit in a 9 1/2 x 13" envelope...the base is an 8" wood circle so I'll wrap the head with lay it on the base..cut out mini blocks slightly hire than the thickness of the face, then I've 1/8th pieces that I'll sit ontop of the blocks which will protect it and tape it secure ...should work..thanks for some of your ideas...

Early morning here, not only is it Friday and we get off at 1:00 BUT Suzanne and Rita are joining me on a trip to Frankenmuth Michigan..and many of you know I'll be meeting up with Fairy (Stacey) and Dragonfly (Janice)..so truly is an exciting day...

Told Stacey when I got her name in 2 swaps and Janice for the Victorian Santa package that the cost of postage for them wouldn't be much more than gas to meet them somewhere...so there we will be today and tomorrow...by leaving from Toronto we'll cut 1 1/2 hrs. off our 6 1/2 hr. trip...at least on our way there..not so good coming back...

Best get everything packed up, talk later

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Betty, you have fun with all the girls! I hope your friend got over her cold? All of you drive safely.

Hi everyone...

UM, Had fun sewing Santa today...Someone please tell me the arm pieces are suppose to be longer the the finished robe piece???

LOL, thanks.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I don't know what to tell you I am just getting ready to get up the nerve to start mine!!!!Let me know what you find out!!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lolI'm with you trisha.... that bag of fur is sitting there staring at me.... when it starts to talk to me maybe I'll feel well enough to sew! lol!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

yes the arms are longer then the robe LOL

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh thank goodness all these questions are being asked now. I have cut mine either so when I do and have the arms longer I won't panic. Thanks Phyllis for being the "brave" one who did it first.

Glenview, IL

LOLOL..Yes Thank you phylis!!!

My gosh, eyeballs got big 'cause thought I miscaluclated somethin!!!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

LOL your welcome girls I know it's almost scary doing something without a "real " pattern and directions but hey ya live dangerously that way ...hahahahaha

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

With my sewing (even if it is with glue) talents he may turn out to be a halloween character instead of the Christmas guy!!!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

roflmbo! If I had to pour the face mine would have definitely turned into a halloween project! teehee!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Now I could do that part of it! I have done some plaster and clay molding in the past and that isn't so bad......fabric gives me a lot more "issues"!!!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone.

Now all we need are the parts from Betty, and further instructions! One step at a time, and we will all have a wonderful Santa for our decorations, and/or gifts.

Still haven't sewed mine! Maybe I'll fell like it this week, if my meds kick in!

Yes girls, pieces look funny but had a visit Fri. evening and Sat. with Dragonfly (Janice) and brought her kit with me...explained what we will be doing and she said OMG that's too easy...

Yes your sleeves and quite long..but you will see why..

I'm just cleaning the house, been gone for a few days and it needs just a lick and a split to be clean so promised if I was a good girl and worked till 2 then I have all afternoon to play, gab and show you the pieces..might even go as far as show you some steps so that you will see why you've done what you've done (or not lol)..have to work on halloween costumes so won't take long to also play with a santa...

OMG just back from Frankenmuth..visited several times but had forgotten it's beauty soooo on the Best/Worse and What did I learn today are photo's if you are interested...

Later I will post pictures of my 'Treasures' that had to come home with me....

So will be back later this aft.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

oooh I better get busy on sewing that fur! LOL!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Hi there, wouldn't you know some little 'earthly angel' came to help me winterize the yard, get all my treasures put in storage..wow, now I really am tired...

Went to grocery store to get turnip for my turkey dinner I'm cooking for tonight, imagine I'm on my own and cooking for about 10..should mean I have left overs right..but had a hankering for turkey and turnips..last weekend was our Thanksgiving and I shouldn't be hungry for it but was, that and banana pie..
sooo stopped into post office and as we don't get mail on Sat. but did I Friday I assume the card parcel ticket in my box is for the hair...only hours too late for US posting...
So Kathy a friend of mine took the card when she left awhile ago and said she's pick it up tomorrow..getting closer..be back in a little while...

Jaye, thank you kindly..certainly was appreciated...and to think you had Janice deliver it to me in person...lol...big hugs to you...

Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

Yep! Met with Betty on Friday and she showed me how everything went together. I am a visual person, not one to be able to do things from directions so this help so much. Yes, it is so easy once you see how everything goes together. Now I see the use of the styro balls, too.
I have had trouble finding things for him to hold; looked for a lantern or something like that but couldn't find them. Where have you all gotten your props? I may have him carry a small gree tree over his shoulder if I can't find anything else.
Now I have to just remember all I saw when I put my Santa together.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Janice I so enjoyed meeting you..wish there would have been more time..played beat the clock ..wow...tired when I got home, not much has improved with regards to resting...think both Suzanne and Rita confirmed I never stop...lol...

Machine is out, came downstairs to get my camera, working on Caleb's Halloween costume and a seam here and there for the santa...so periodically this aft. and tonight in between my 'to do' list I'll post photo's, NOT for you to go further lol..it's so that you don't panic..lol...is truly easy...

Glenview, IL

Anjl, don't forget to accomidate the fur. LOL, I learned the hard way...

OH my gosh, got to tall ya, Thought I'd be smart and place the robe piece of a fold, ROFL but forgot to fold the pattern piece and so i ended up with a really long robe...hehehe, but then I was able to save the piece and used it for the sleeves, so that worked out ok.

LOL, good thing, this is my "practice" When i do it again with the Green velvet I will know what i am doing, hehehe.

....hate to say, but i do not like the liquid glue, Sticking to sewing.

Betty, so funny, was reading the directions and was giggling at the "not three for a !.00" hahahah, when I went into my thread bin, What do i see 4 for a dollar, lol was that a subtle hint for me?
...LOL, you will be happy to know I am using coat thread! Nice and thick.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

wait...what do you mean accomodate for the fur?

I have 'some' sewing skills but they are limited ....and my sewing volcabulary is limited to seam and stitch and thread and needle.... can you elaborate please?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Good for you Judy..did learn the hard way..lol..

Son and a friend are here storing the 'Foxy Lady' for the winter..imagine, don't think I took her out more than 3 times..weather wasn't the nicest and if it was I was busy...

Then, in he comes and asks me if a have a reciprical saw, who me, of course I do, says he must cut 1 limb off the tree, so then how come I'm seeing 3 or 4 cut...

She's coming off the trailer this year, don't know how they'll do that, he says 'mom, you'll only hear one bang' .. that doesn't make me happy so as the window is right where they are working and I'm sewing I'd better keep my eyes to the material and mind off what they are doing...

So if you've taken the larger piece and have sewn to make a skirt (gown) according to the directions it should look like this...

I hemmed the bottom (some of you may use fabric glue or sew by hand)

Not sure AnjL, think some are adding fur touches..not to worry, not necessary...

someone mentioned sleeves longer than the dress, this would only have happened if you sewed the sleeve lengthwise...this is how it should look...

the right side piece is the CORRECT piece

the left is incorrect and would be longer than the gown...if you've done it incorrectly then you'll have to redo it...either rip out seam allowance or try to pull apart the glued hem and re-glue...

Good golly and gasp!!
that is what I did...Plus, I think I better look at the sizes again,

Mine looks awfully skinny compared to yours...LOL, scratching my head here
somthin just isn't right.

Boo and hoo for sure.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Going back to the dress, when the slits on each side are cut, folded and either sewn or glued it should look like this...the open slits on each side will accommodate the arms...

Sleeves:

Judy when sewn the sleeves should be 9" wide (that's the part that makes a tube so we can insert the arms, the length will be approx 11" then sew a cuff about 1/4" or 1/2" in it should look like this when done and you should have 2 - because there are 2 arms..lol..just a joking with you...

Now for the cape (hood)
Now for some of you who have already made their outfit, my apologies, but I found that the hood (cape) was just too wide and did not hang right sooo cut off a piece until it measures in width 22"

When each of the side has been glued or sewn it should look like this

Did everybody get close to this????

Glenview, IL

LOL Betty....

Good thing this is practice because I figured out what I did, so way wrong!!

OK...UM, I might be making a mini one with this pieces.
Going to start all over...LOL good thing I have so many different pieces of material...
this one is red/with white trim...

New one, is green and I think I better add trim last!

Got to laugh Betty, dunno why I am having such an ordeal.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Think Judy it's because sometimes people make the project more difficult in 'thought' than it really should be..

IT IS a simple project..onces you've accomplished 1 then do as many as you wish and embellish and add whatever to it...but the first one, let's just make it pretty..lol...

Victoria Harbour, ON

The package you will receive shortly will have the following...again, the armature is simple/simple so probably you yourself could make many more...was simplified most of all for shipping purposes...

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

First thing we will do when you receive your kit, first of all smile and applaud that it did arrive....lol

take the dowel which will have the arm wire stappled to it...insert it in the base and glue, some may use glue gun but I had some wood glue so dabbed it around the bottom sides of the dowel and inserted it...

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

Now this is really hi tech..(smile and laugh) I sent you a nail .. you will see I've drilled a small hole in the dowel, insert the nail and with hammer tap it into the dowel to secure it ...

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

If Missy would only leave me alone..wants to play...

I'm sending you strips of quilting batting..I just secured the strip on the nail

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

The arm wire has been stappled but can move up and down, so now I've without pulling tight have covered the arm, kept wrapping until I was back up to the nailed part went under the arms and back under the arms to kind of have the arms be out stretched and then continued to put the batting around the other arm and back up then go under and over again to secure and attach again on the nail...

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

Now I took the 2nd piece of batting and attached in on the nail, and lightly wrapped from top going once around the dowel and as I headed further down thinking cone shapped I might have gone around a couple times then perhaps 3..I am sending you in total 3 strips..with the 3rd strip I attached it to the nail and lightly wrapped doing more laps around the lower part where the skirt will rest...

Then I just pulled at the batting a little to give it more fullness
