Nice!!
I posted on another thread but someone at the RU encouraged me to repost some of my art. I was a professional artist for 20 yrs-most of that time, I was a custom tile muralist. This is paper and pastel. I work very large in pastel and small in watercolors. I haven't done anything since last summer. When I went to art school in the late 60's no one taught basic skills and I was very disappointed. I ended up dropping out after my junior year, feeling very much like a self-taught artist. I did learn etching and lithography. They were my favorites but I haven't done them since. I did some slab pottery dishes in the early 80's but didn't like the show circuit much. xnow I have a new career and all my creativity goes into working with adolescents!!

Here is a before and after series. I like both. This is a very large pastel painting.

You would have done very well at the right outdoor art shows.
Your skill level is right up there.
I hope you continue to paint and draw just for your own pleasure.
Thats one fantastic Peony.
I want to take a pastel drawing class this winter.
My professional art carreer was in pottery and sculpture.
When my body broke down I went to Watercolor, and am self taught too.

Thanks. I didn't like shows. I used to help a friend who started in pottery and then painted raw silk and made clothes. I found the fairs to be very tiring (being "on" all the time and talking to people who often had no clue about the work involved and talked about how expensive things were. Why did they go?). Besides, I could never do production work.

Oh, here's the after.

I started early with instruments. Woodwin family. Recorder moved up to clarinet and sax. I started on the trumpet stopped. Harmonica for a while. I did the violin, guitar and piano a little. Ended back with the clarinet and stayed there. I was the lead in band and orchestra (in school). I havent touch it for about 15 years now. This is making me feel old **GRUNT** I should sell it or give it to the school music dept for a needy kid!

I played the flute, bass drum, and sang in some impressive choruses. I just took up the accordion last winter (Italian button box). It sure does cheer me up. I think you should play that clarinet again!

Here's part of a watercolor I did after a visit to Venice.

I did a series of hands which I like too.

A friend took B & W photos of my hands for me so I wasn't influenced by color.

Sorry about the glass reflection, but you get the idea. I think there are 6 or so, but these are my only digital pics.

Back later, we're having router problems.

Try taking the pictures on a slight angle and not head on.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I did try that-but nothing would work.

Booj - the hand ones have a 'Jack the Ripper' feel to them!

Everyone's work is so good! I don't paint or draw anymore, but I do love to weave...............

how cool is that

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

That's so pretty.

Victor, I once did a show with the hands in one room and the flowers in the other. People either loved the hands and the flowers left them cold, or loved the flowers and hated the hands. Hey, they are 2 of my multiple personality!! I love them both. I called the show Light and Shadow. That's me.

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Well they must be good. Not my thing but I have been back enjoying your work non the less.
To the many questions over the years when ask what is good art I say whatever stops your eye even if you would not hang it in your home.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

There are a million answers to that question! RUK's DH told me he likes art that makes him work mentally. Others like art that's peaceful. Others political. Others the feeling of an experience (Georgia O'K's goal). I figure art is whatever communicates directly. Thank goodness there's lots of answers so there is room for us all!

Dumb question here Boojum. Did you paint on the tiles and fire or do you do the painting and print on the tiles then fire? Either way they are beautiful. I love the pastel paintings, the orchid and Peony are beautiful.

mrsj Your weaving is beautiful. I bought a small loom and worked with it for a while but could never get into it. Still has the first yarn on it and has been maybe 10 years. LOL

This is a Raku tile wall hanging that I did of one of my dogs many years ago.

I am so inspired by everyone's unique talents. This thread is such a treat for the eyes as well as the soul. Thank you all.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Picabo, actually a very intelligent question. I mostly painted with underglazes, then they were sprayed with a clear glaze and fired. The exceptions were when I painted on glazed tiles with glazes or china paint. Here is an example of china paint.

Thumbnail by boojum
Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

In that case, what do you seal it with, booj?

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

And glaze on glaze.

Thumbnail by boojum
Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

China paint doesn't need to be sealed-it fires into the glaze.

What else have you done Mrs J? I find that very interesting as well. Anyone do bead work? I tried incorporating beads and needlepoint - did not have much luck with it. I should try some needle work again. That's a great winter, sit in front of the TV type hobby. I used to do alot of crochet too.

You people are killing me. I used to hand embroider back in the late 60's early 70's. Yup I still have the box and all. Oh yeah I have stamped ready to be embroidered pillowcases, table cloths, runner and scarfs. Between the clarinet and sewing I am feeling really young today. NOT and now I realize I am hoarding stuff! Oh - the sewing machine. I think I have a sickness.
