Stacey... I can't push Milky Spores enough... will cure your June Bug problem... If you have an infestation of June Bugs, then you must have Grub Worms too. Get you some Milky Spores and apply it all over your yard... will kill the Grubs, and you won't have June Bugs... and Milky Spores last about 10 years.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

what are milky sproes?? We had them much worse last year, but at about sunset the june bugs swarm!! At first we didn't know what they were and started up our fireplace to get them not to nest-my mom laughed about that one!! What do June Bugs and grubs have to do with each other?? I know Japanese beetles are the grubs in adult form...

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Japanese beetles are June Bugs... and yes, the grub worm is the larva of the Jap Beetle. Kill the grub, and you won't have June Bugs. Milky Spores is a beneficial micro organism in powder form that feeds on grubs. You apply it in little piles in a grid pattern on your lawn and water it. It then enters the grub, feeds and multiplies, then goes on to feed on more grubs. Google "Milky Spores"... I bought mine online. And, it really works.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

BJ, it really works? We have grub worms like you wouldn't believe. Can't turn a shovel without finding 2 or 3. They love our poor draining clay 'topsoil' that was brought in when the house was built.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

It really really works. I had grubs really bad when we moved here 3 years ago... and applied Milky Spores last year. This year I have noticed a marked decrease in grubs, and have seen "0" june bugs this year. It takes a while for the Milky Spores to spread completely, but given time... they'll search out and destroy all the grubs in your yard.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, and something else I have noticed. Milky Spores doesn't seem to effect earth worms. It seems I have a abundance of earth worms now... so I'm thinking that Milky Spores only eat grubs...

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

That's good. we have lots of earth worms and seems everything that rids grubs rids worms too. Bought dicot-something-er-other earth to sprinkle for grubs but didn't use it for fear it would kill the worms.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

And grasshoppers. OMG! They get so bad this time of year. I don't use pesticides because of the butterflies and hummers but the grasshoppers are stripping some plants. They get really big and scary. Wish I could find the thread on DG that talked about something similar to milky spores - a bacteria, I think - that grasshoppers eat and it kills them. Not supposed to harm anything else.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

You mean like this fat one here?
I followed BJ's advice an using Milky Spores. A tad expensive, but it will pay for itself when I don't see them anymore.
Yep, it's a plague of grasshoppers this year. They make all my brugs leaves look like swiss cheese. And I don't use pesticides neither, just try to soap and water them..

Soapy water doesn't phase our grasshoppers but does work on soft bodied aphids. Between the grasshoppers and the grubs I could spend all day squishing them and not make a dent.

Does the milky spores need to be applied at any particular time of year or at any time? I need to get some.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Go to amazon.com for the milky spores, a lot cheaper there... It is like half price than the feed stores.

I applied mine when it's that dastardly season. But there are some that said, it's better if it's done in late July or about right now. If applied in spring, the larvae are too big and won't be ingesting much.
Here's the FAQ page on MS

Thanks LK, I need to get more cans. More acres to treat.

I don't even know if I have grasshoppers - but PLEASE, don't any of y'all make the mistake of using those Japanese Beetle bag traps for them, OK?

Oh, I give up, to antsy to sit here and read, gotta go dig something somewhere, work off this nervous energy. Catch y'all later.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

I have to say that I don't have many grasshoppers... I do have some, but haven't seen very many... I've been told it's because I have a lot of frogs a my place... and the frogs eat the grasshoppers... not sure if that true, but it seems to be the case.

Milky Spores can be applied anytime... there 's really no set date to put it down... HOWEVER, I would think the best time is when the June Bugs lay their eggs and the Larvae are being formed... yep, about July. But those larvae are going to feed and burrow into the ground all fall, winter and spring... and the Milky Spores are going to seek them out.

NOW, if I can just figure out how to attract more lady bugs to eat the aphids, I'll be happy.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ROGLMAOPIMP...I'z not firm the south buts I'z undustan

oooooo milky spores get rid of grubs no june bugs and that also means less moles as moles dine on grubs too I like that idea

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

YEP... now you got it... Phyllis. Just break the food chain, and you're ahead of the game.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

When I first moved here, there were mole holes everywhere.. Not anymore, since I made Rimau pay for his meals.
Apply cat litter.. and no new holes.
As for JB traps, of course they only work if you put it in someone's garden you're envious of!!

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, yes... and I forgot to mention... the waste from the micro organisms in Milky Spores is like fertilizer for your lawn... so, it's a win/win/win/win solution.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

oh we are gonna break it alright come pay day LOL

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

BJ, Milky Spore should contact you to be their spokes person ;)

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Shucks, I have a cat that catches moles. Anyone want him, it's cheaper than Milky spores--just feed and water him. Well take him to the vet, play with him, so on and so forth. Well, was a good thought anyways. LOL

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Hey Marion and Phyllis, anymore thoughts to that special sewing project for sistahs?
I was thinking, the squares can simply depict what we are, not necessarily our personal photos... or even cartoons or ourselves drawn!
24 squares don't have to be turned into a quilt or lap quilt, could even be that wall hanging?

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

lap/ wall hangin what ever and as for pictures I've found something I am going to look for here in town and try it out as if it works like it says you bet a personal picture will be required LOL then material to go around the white square...but we were talkin maybe after the first of the year to start it

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Maybe Milky Spores will send me a finder's fee... ya think?

I'll learn not to go barefoot in the house... I'm so ticked off at Don right now, I can scream.
We have one bad place in the floor left over from when our house was flooded last year. The top layer of the wood is warped and has been working it's way up. I just got the top layer of skin scraped off two toes, and finished breaking that top layer of the board off. I don't think I can get a shoe on now... I've been after Don for a year to fix that board... don't think he's not going to get a lip over it now.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Yep, next year will be great and all the time to finish one. Perfection can't be rushed, right Marion?
Did someone suggest double borders too?

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Ouch BJ!!

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Double ouch, BJ!

I went to Amazon and read the FAQ link. Don't know which application method is best for our situation. We have so much area to cover. The beds alone are huge. BJ, which method do you use? Sounds like I need some kind of injector? Need to figure this out and get some ordered ASAP. Says fall is the best time as they are heavy feeders now.

Good Morning,
You all make me smile! Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed your visit to my house.
Yes, I am Native American. Ojibwa (Chippewa) From Lac du Flambeau WI. Actually i was born and raised in IL. My family lives in and around the Rez. So, We chose the WI house because it is exactly half way. This way my family can come and visit.
Or we have a stopping point. The ride 8 hours to the rez.

Debra, I learned to embroider very young. Then I learned to sew in HS, home ec.
Didn't do either one for years and then I was invited to a baby shower and didn't have a whole lot of money so i decided to create my own blanket for a gift...I used to watch the Quilting and sewing shows...So much of my stuff is this and that all incorporated together...The Fairy flag was created because I am not an artist so I couldn't paint her, then I was going to try and make her with clay and then paint, however I quickly learned I am no potter either. So went back to what I do know Material beads and embroidery. She will be sort of a 2d...I have a fairy book that I fell in love with...Teaches you how to paint, hahha, showed it to Betty when she came and she told me it was for advanced artists...So I took the same instruction for painting and applied them with the material...For her dress i used a Barbie as a model, Her wings I tried to cheat and use a copy but my dd,who is an artist told me I have to do it free hand so I drew the wings to size and created each part of pieces from a clear plastic template.(learned that trick from Quilting shows).
I do enjoy embroidery, It’s all done by hand and for me something to do and helps to relieve anxiety. Here is one many baby blankets, this particular one was for my niece.

I am enjoying the exchange on the Quilt Idea, so let me know when ya get it figured out.OK, Will try and make a square.

Ouch BJ!!! Sorry nto hear that...

OK-so I am confused again...my Junebugs and japbeetles look very different-are they different stages of the same bug?? And I am sooo getting me somemilky spores!!

Mom said she would helpme with my quilt squares:)

Glenview, IL

Oh BJ...thats hurts big time!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Jaye, I mentioned a double border so as to have some unity. A narrow border of the fabric that represents us then a wider border of maybe black. Color just suggestion for now. Trying to add to make blocks come out to a 12 X12 when set into quilt. Jump in here with your advice and opinions.

After the first of the year when things are a wee bit slower maybe? Thoughts?

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I think likemaybe March-I have no other thoughts as I have no clue on quilting...ask my MIL...

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Debra... I used the powder... don't buy the applicator... I just used a old piece of PVC pipe we had laying around, and a teaspoon... just place the tube where you want your spores, and put a teaspoon down the tube.
I have over an acre here... and I did not cover the entire property. I went about every 4' around the outside of all my beds... they'll migrate and multiply about 4' per year...
I figure if I still find grubs this fall when we're planting trees, I'll get some more and put it out in the lawn. But so far, I have seen a big difference.

Stacey... June Bugs are another name for the Japanese Beetle...

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Hmmm-mine look very different-the June Bugs are much larger and not shiny....

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

This is like my June Bug:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/5129/

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

And I have these-they bite or pinch

http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/804/

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

The first one (brown one) is a Japanese Beetle.
And is the adult stage of the grub worm.
http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/DG7664.html

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

OK-so now I am even more confused....I only see the ones in the 1st pic from that iste on my flowers-the others I only get at dusk in June...so they are different stages of the same bug??
