Ladies, I had a post half finished on the subject of Y's.... dang boss tasked me.... It's a definate 1 "stem" dividing into two, not a limb coming of the main trunk. Phyllis your toppless beauties will bloom, it's like a person coming of age... if ya know what I mean..just have to mature to reproductive age... probably a new stem will grow up from the broken end and it will go on to make the "Y"... Cat those are still pretty dresses on your naked lady! Is there a smell in the evening? Sometimes they smell early in the evening and sometimes it's almost dark, I've found, wonder why??
She's About To...........#19
Mornin girlies and gents!!
Phyllis.. sure wish I could help you, but I'll be interested to learn the answer too. I think I understand though. I have several brugs that have the asymmetrical leaves and have had for some time.. but still no Y yet.
cat.. I agree.. waay pretty dresses on the nekid lady..lol
Here's my lil baby that I forgot about sending ya'll the pic of since Ike decided he wanted to stay awhile here..lol... The blooms are as big as she is..lol! I was asking about the seed pod earlier but I don't think anyone answered me. She dropped the whole flower and stem.. Does that mean I won't get a seed pod??
Modene.. sooo glad ya'll are safe!!
Bonnie.. hmmm does that mean you asked the boss.. or you figured he wouldn't go for it?? Give me his addy..lol... he needs a whipping!! BUT.. sounds like you would really be in heaven and get paid for it to to work at a nursery!!
Sandy.. praying for all of you!!
Faye.. bless your heart.. I know what you went through!! Took me a long time to want to get attached to another baby, but soo glad I did!! Your Snese is adorable.. and he knows he's loved.. look at the cockiness he has..LOL
I just read about the asymetrical leaves (on DG) indicating bud production, this year. I've been watching mine and it does not hold true to all types of brugs... but I'd say, yes your toppless girl is of budding age... you may see some action forming from the branch that is right above that leaf.... the top, if well rooted will probably go on to form buds, even tho it is probably not too tall... I have a little 1-2ft rooted cutting of Maya that I noticed has a bud on it... I wasn't even looking for buds, but it may have been a cutting from above the 'Y', but I don't think so, cause I try to take them from below the Y to keep the new plant "true" to it's "mama's" form.
Beck! Where's the pic?
No, Becky there will be no seed pod, cause you need 2 different blooming brugs at the same time to pollinate or be pollinated.. and if it was pollinated, it fell off..... I'll get some pics of Maya's pods tonite...
Aw! So purty! It's Joyce's, too! Her original plant is a Great Grandma! lol Congrats Becky, I'm so happy to help bring you joy... so you ready for coleus cuttings? I should post a pic of Monster White when I got it from Joyce in Spring... and what she looks like now.... Joyce I really have enjoyed this well-behaved brug you shared and so happy to play it forward.. I just love her bushiness and she has been in bloom all summer!
Bonnie.. are you saying she is a monster white?? I was thinking she was Charles?? TY for the compliment!! I can't believe what all she and I went through and she actually held her blooms!! So I am thankful.. this being my 1st bloom ever!! Sooo you have to have 2 different ones to pollinate, huh?? I need to read some more I guess.. maybe it's stick in this thick scull..LOL
Yep.. that's a Y Phyllis..lol Congrats!! Since you will be having her in the house, she'll go ahead and set buds!! YAY!!;
The pic of the white one IS Monster White... Charlie starts out white but ends yellowish-orange....the bloom shape is thinner and not so hoopty skirted.. (hoopty is a new word, I just made up) I have pics of Charlie, on my cam at home.. I'm still saying you are going to see a bud, Phyllis... please don't hold me to it, but your plant is regenerating itself in effort to bloom and have the opportunity for pollination and a new generation of life.
AuntB is it like my apple trees and it needs a different variety to pollenate...??
Or can it do it with another Isabella plant??
The only other Brug I have bigger is Versi Salmon and he's doing really great now that i've learned alittle bit more about them...
My Versi Peach I just got as a cutting..
And Do Dat's like the same treatment as Brugs...epsom salts etc...??
Two different plants.. blooming at the same time... moths or a paint brush in your hand will pollinate... I think dats do take the same treatment as brugs as far as light and nutrients..
Phyllis In our climate dats really resent too much water ( in the ground) in fact they get really unhappy. If they are in containers they need alot more water.
Thanks Louise...mines in a pot... I aquired him a few months back...
He's a double or triple purple?? can't remember...
But i'll plant him outside in the spring..
gots lots of seeds that i'm gonna try and start inside and transplant outside...
Louise, you've inspired me to broadcast some dat seeds (bushy and tall ones) next spring in the fresh dirt I hope to have around my foundation... it doesn't stay wet there very long and my potted ones dry out so fast...
Phyllis, I meant 2 different kinds of Brugmansia plants to pollinate successfully... (maybe I should read before I post?)
That is what I do. Just throw a pod on the ground and break it up with a shovel. The whites I do even before the last frost.
AuntB I understood i'm trying to grow Apple Trees...My DD got me one 2 years ago...
Then found out we needed 2 different kinds so she got me another last year w/5 different kinds on 1 tree...
It had about a dozen baby apples...But the deer thought they we're for them....LOL
Louise plant seeds outside in the springtime??
Hi all. Well the verdict is not set in concrete just yet, but I think the judge is going to rule in our favor for custody of Amiyah. Now the hard part is the waiting. tick tock!
OMG! Sandy, I thought you would get the thumbs up today! how agonizing... we're still right here with ya! Louise, I need to get in gear on the dirt... I think Leaflady is bringing me a prickly seed pod to the RU this weekend...do yu have a back up pod, just in case? Hotties, Me and Louise get to meet at the RU Saturday!! Ain't that great??? I'm so excited! I know some of the TX Hotties have RU's coming up to... I'm bringing Hot Pink plastic cups for people to take coleus cuttings home in, just specially in honor of our Hottie Group! :)
phyllis...yes right in the ground.
W H E W ! ! ! I had to forgo the other threads and get 'caught up' on this one!!! Gabby hotties :)
Anyhoo, I have blooms and flushes!!! WHOOO HOOOO!!!! My "Monster White", "Solid Gold" and "Pink Insignis" brugs are all flushing (30+ bloom pods!!!) and blooming. Tomorrow we are FINALLY getting rid of our Dial-Up service and getting DSL so I can FINALLY post pictures!!! AM I EXCITED OR WHAT?!?! I also have other brugs that have Y'd and am seeing a single pod, or two, on them so perhaps I'll be in a tropical paradise...hmmph!...just in time to start thinking of taking them in the house----NOOOOOO!!!! I'm not ready for overwintering yet :(
Jan
Sandra, still have our candle lit here. Prayers still coming your way. At least the judge didn't say no to you, so that is a good sign???
I had a double/triple/quad yellow datura bloom this year, and it is the only datura I have blooming at the moment, and I have alll kinds of seeds pods on it!!!.
So I am asking also, Dats, don't need to be pollenated to make seed pods, But Brugs do???
Linda Kay
CONGRATS Jan! On blooms and DSL.......and my sincere sympathies on the W word..
JanLynn, so happy for you, you must show us pictures when you can. And that gives me hope that I may still get some blooms this year. Your Pink Insignis you gave me is growing well, just no little okras yet!!! I will be patient, still plenty of time!
Linda Kay
I'm not sure LK, I'm not as into the dats as I am the brugmansia... seems they would have to be pollinated by something, maybe they are self fertile? but maybe not... going to find some info
I think they are self fertile. They seem to set alot of pods. But we have night moths here galore so hard to say.
"While the plant provides nectar to several creatures in the desert food chain, it has formed a partnership called “mutualism” with the Hawk Moth, an insect nearly as large as your palm. The Sacred Datura furnishes the moth with nectar as a food source and shelter for its eggs. Unselfishly, it serves leafy meals to the moth’s hungry larvae, so much, in fact, that it must draw down on the store of energy in its roots if it is to re-grow its leaves and survive the foraging.
What does the plant get in return for this arrangement of mutualism? Pollination. Its male pollen is transferred by the moth to female flower parts, enabling fertilization to take place. The Sacred Datura can then produce fruit and seeds and new generations."
found this on a google search....
Never seen a hawk moth in Philly lol...but I have bunches of pods!!! Hello Hotties!!!! JanLynn we want pics : ) Sandy things sound good!!

Karen don't know how close you are to Tyler, but there is a habitat for humanity restore there. We got two large tube light fixtures still in the box for ten bucks at the one here in Omaha. four foot long.
Louise I'm about 20 miles from Tyler, shop there all the time, and I've been to that Restore! I'll sure have to go by and look there. I love that place but seldom go, I don't know why...
Aw shoot Bonnie, thanks for catching that! I changed it, LOL! LOUISE GUESS WHAT? Just called Tyler ReStore and they have the 4 foot shop lights!!!! I will be there first thing in the morning. How many did you buy?
two boxes. Four of them. I bought a cool pendant light for the kitchen for five bucks too! I love that store. I am planning on getting all the windows for the sunroom there. Such a good cause it goes to!
