2nd Annual On-Line Workshop - Victorian Santa Pt. 2

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Marion, no rush here. The more books I have the more likely I'll be to go crazy at the fabric shops. You'll be saving me money!

I'm sitting down right now to 'quilt' my rag purse squares. 4" square of batting sandwiched between two 5" squares of fabric. Will be sewing an 'X' across the center. Can anyone tell me the best way to pin them and what stitch, etc. to use? I think I heard something about a 'feeder' foot? Don't have one of those and my machine only has very basic stitches.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Remember I am no expert but I would suggest: pin perpendicular to the seem, try to take pin out as you come to them so as not to damage the needle; a basic straight stitch would do fine.

Are you referring to a "walking foot"? Your regular foot should work okay. A walking foot is great if you plan to do a lot of work like this in the future. I haven't a clue how much they are now but the last one I bought I almost had to get a bank loan!! Yeap, that expensive but well worth it in the long run. This help any?

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Found my scissors! In the machine drawer, right where I put them!
I love my rotary cutter! Especially if I'm cutting quilt strips. Save loads of time. Only problem is, I cut to many!

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Duh, yes, Marion a 'walking' foot. lol! Thanks! Does it loosen the drag or something as the fabric feeds through it? I'm off to try my first square. Wish me luck.

Really don't think just for the amount of sewing this project takes that anyone would have to go out and purchase one..you could be sewing the seams by hand....

Off topic..that's what threads are all about, they take a life of their own..

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

That is a pretty good discription Debra, actually it "walks" allowing the fabric to feed through evenly. Great when sewing plaids, etc and you want them matched. Okay how is it going with the squares?

Good for you Audrey. That sounds like something I would do. Actually put them away properly and then not remember doing it. LOL

Victoria Harbour, ON

Wow you guys are sure being creative, will leave you to your ideas but remember the armiture was made to accommodate the directions above...maybe I can just send the santa faces and you could figure out what armiture would best fit your santa's...that would be o...

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Betty, hope you're not thinking the walking foot is for the Santa. It's for quilting. Marion is 'educating' me. lol!

Marion, 19 down and 19 to go! Originally planned on having all red on the outside with the white to the inside but may consider alternating colors.

Whew, finally got my fabric and the wire, hopefully I'll be able to work on it this weekend. The lady cutting the fabric at Joann's didn't know the conversion from metric to whatever we use here, so I just got a yard and figured I can cut it down LOL!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Betty, please send the origianal pieces you were going to send. I wasjust thinking out lous, and what I was thinking, may not work, so just send what your original plans are for the Santa please?
Did not mean to confuse or sidetrack anything.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

A metre is 39 inches so you can educated the fabric store. LOL

Debra, looking good Sistah!!! Now let's see I saw some Gator( perish the thought) fabric the other day maybe my friends in Gainesville would like one for Christmas? Humm line it with FSU? Ohhhh, that would be soo mean and might cost me a couple of friends for sure. LOL Okay I will be nice. Seriously Debra the stitching shows really well in the pictures and looks like you are on a roll!!!

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Thank you, Betty. That's funny about lining the purse with FSU fabric! You have a little devil in you, huh? lol!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

You might say that. Then I wonder where the youngest GD comes up with the things she does--something about apples and trees I guess.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL!

Just worried that the armiture which is very simplified because it's meant to be a project everyone can do won't meet your new needs...

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I will make it as designed, Just was thinking outloud, and outside the box.
Please send the santa as designed.
Thanks
LK

Victoria Harbour, ON

No no you make it as you've thought out your design, once I show you how I've put them together which again as I said are very simplified, then you probably will be able to change it to meet your needs...I'm just a worry wart, thinking that if I send armitures and none can put their santa's together I'd feel so terribly bad especially as you've sent $$$$....

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

So what do I use for the body, if your not going to send the parts you are making? I was just thinking of changing his robe to open in the front is all I was thinking!
Geesh, did not mean to mess things up for you. See what thinking outloud gets me??? LOL
Please don't change your mind. Send out your santa parts as planned.
LK

Victoria Harbour, ON

Was sending everything Linda Kay lol you misunderstood what I was saying, was saying that later once you see how this one is put together so easily (primitive) then maybe you can do all the changes and it will work out...so expect your parcel as soon as I get the hair to pack inside it...shouldn't be long

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks Betty, Sorry I did not understand you. Blame it on the vicadin!!!
Patiently waiting for delivery of the santa parts.
LK

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL Vicadin! Now that will make you do weird things... I'm glad there has been clarification, I can't seem to buy a piece of material without some sort of issue, Lord help me put the thing together lol!

Glenview, IL

Hehehe, You all are doing great!! i have yet to lay out my material...Yikes forgot aBOUT NAP, BUT i do have other material so maybe I'll start with that. Plus, i did find this fur material...I am glad you did too think it will be a real nice touch.

This weekend, I found the perfect staff! Also, at the cottage my sone son found these little lanterns a while back...LOL, told him they were a good trash to treasure find and Ohwah!! Thats going to be great for this piece of Art. I am so happy about that...heheh, I just giddy when i realized it is the perfect size!...

Happy sewing and V Santaing.

Sitting here with another 6 santa's...my goodness I'm going to miss having these men around once they are gone....will post photo tonight of them waiting to travel to your home...

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I just can't wait to get mine! I'm all ready to start sewing, just have to fing a place to put my fairy garden, as it now resides on top of my machine! I may box it up till after Christmas, since I just might want to make another Santa or two, if I can find the supplies!

Victoria Harbour, ON

My molds have 2 faces the size we need, then 2 faces slightly smaller but when hair/beard is glued on they look same...so rather than pour only 2 of the 4 in my molds I pour the 4, will pack up the 2nd face to go with the one you purchased...so yes, those who want to make another can, the armiture is so simplified that you, hubby or a neighbor will be able to make another...

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Betty, it is my time to be confused now!! LOL Does that mean we will be getting 2 faces in our package? If not, is it to late to order a 2nd set? If it is I do understand.

Victoria Harbour, ON

No confusion, you were getting 1 kit, but then in the mold they have just slightly smaller 2 other faces, so rather than pour 2 empties, I've poured them and am painting them as well, so will put an extra SMALLER one in the kit for each of the kits you have ordered...

this labtec camera isn't the best but it might give you an idea of what I mean..I'm sitting here, just started another batch of 6..this is the difference in size..will take a better one this evening

What is that song?? "I'm so excited!...and I just can't hide it..!!!" ( and thank the good lord you can't hear me sing!!!!!!!)

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Is it from the movie Flash Dance? May be the wrong title - I'm thinking of the one with Kevin Bacon way back when.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I think that is the one.....but oohhhh I can't wait to get started! If I can get all the "Have To Do" errands dealt with this afternoon I am headed for the fabric store to get my supplies so I start to work!!!! I ordered two and am hoping I get my Mom to work on the second one.....I think she will enjoy it if I can get her started!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh Betty, that will be nice to have more faces. Maybe a Mr. & Mrs Clause would look nice?
Now you got me thinking again, and I get into trouble when I think outloud!!! LOL

Can't wait to get the faces.
LK

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)
