The original cuts that I told you to cut first on newsprint are layered with your material open - ONLY 1 layer otherwise you'll be doing 2 santa's...no folds of material at all...

One piece of paper....one piece of material..

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Ok, then I will go and cut my material out.

I don't have my materiel yet. It was mailed today. should be here early next wek! I think I can get it, though, I've made dolls by doing the clothes like this!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Betty, did you send a group dmail? If so I didn't get it. Thanks.

Been out today and just returned home so will need to get caught up here.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Did send it Marion...will copy/paste and send it to you...

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

I too dont have fabric yet... will be shopping this week.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Not till end of October girls so you've much time..I alloted quite a few weeks so no one would be pressured with the sewing..

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

hah! sewing will be the easy part for me... I'm scared of that glue gun now! lol!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Don't be...lol...just watch where you will put your fingers...
Off to bed, 4:45 a.m.comes early and I still haven't had supper and want to make another batch of 'santa's..' did 5 this morning so will try to do same tonight..must dry a few days so by Friday I'll be office painting again..lol

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Night Betty.
How many Santas have you made? You just keep pouring and pouring more faces...
Linda Kay

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ok so the first step should look like this once the back seam is done the hem and the slits for the arm area is folded and sewn then the gathering stitch at the top ?

You got it...as long as the thread on the 2 upper neck parts are strong enough to gather closely along the armiture (body)...Mius2...thanks for posting, will give them a better idea with this visual..

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

oh yeah I hate thread that breaks LOL used the longest stitch my machine has for it

Victoria Harbour, ON

Linda Kay, it's that time of year for me, do many workshops..I've 36 painted, 12 drying ready for painting, poured 8 this morning...

Probably will need about 60 or more for class so still a lot of pouring and painting, not hard, just have to remember to do it...

These should be dry by Friday and I'm only at work four hrs on Friday so it will fill in my morning..make the hours speed by..lol

Waiting for my call as to where to meet Suzanne then I'm off...gab later

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I probably won't be able to work on it for a little while, going out of town this weekend and I like to visit with Dave the few hours I get to see him after I get home from work and before he goes to work.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hello Betty. Where is everyone???
I have my material cut out, and sewn, waiting on the rest of the directions, and Betty's kit.
Hope your all doing ok. Please take care.
Linda Kay

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Here I am! How do you like your santa's robe, Linda Kay?

I had unplanned help this week working in the yard. Not complaining - needed the help big time - and we got a lot done. Only negative was I've been frustrated wanting to sew and have been too exhausted at night. Hope to get mine cut and start sewing tonight!

How about anyone else?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Did you have any problems Linda Kay with the directions...if there is some part that sounded confusing let me know so that I can write them again....

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

I have a question...

I went out and bought all my material last night ...but I found some faux fur on sale at Joannes (40% off!)
Can I use the faux fur as the robe?

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

I'm waiting on payday so I can get my check sent off to Betty and get the rest of my stuff needed have the sewing part all done for now.

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Are we supposed to be mailing checks? I've been thinking we were going to get a dmail with the final amount and Betty's mailing address. Did I miss it?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Well, so far, it is easy. I am waiting on the parts, and more directions, but I imagine Betty is waitingon my check. It will go out Monday!

Betty, I promise, the check will be in the mail Monday.
Linda Kay

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

DUH! Never mind - YES I got the dmail. Sorry, Betty. Check will be in tomorrow's mail.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Linda Kay, absolutely NOT waiting on anyone's check...I'm still working on the kits...just got my new saw late this week, other broke down, so now the proud owner of another commercial 20" throat scroll saw....lol...

So mega cutting to do, pretty well have all the faces done, waiting for the supplier to send me the hair...expecting it this week, so still on the job and there really isn't anything left to do in advance...rest will be on our workshop day...

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sounds good. I will be waiting for the kit, and further instructions.
I am making a red one, and a purple one. But the fur one sure sounds pretty. Make sure you post the pictures for all to see!!!

Betty, I have a question. I have velvet AND a lining materiel. Do I cut it all out of the velvet, or is some of it from the silky stuff? I'm also thinking about which way to lay the pattern to get the "nap" going in the right direction! Are all the pieces one garment? I hate to be so dense, I've made things like this before, but I need to see a pic of the finished product!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Doe--if I may jump in....
Used to a LOT of sewing in my hayday!

On plush fabrics--when the nap is going down--it will look smoother--maybe a bit lighter.
If the nap is going up (towards the head), it will look darker and a bit more "messy", as touching it or stroking it will lay the nap differently in different places.

NOW---Since, I believe, the front and the back is all cut out from one piece of fabric--either the front or the back will have different naps. You decide which you want where.....
Rub your hand up and down the velvet material and see what you like, or don't like about it....

The solution, of course, would be to cut front and back separately (nap down, preferably) and then sew it together at the shoulders.

Another issue......sewing AGAINST the nap makes your fabric "creep" and it will be hard to match the two lengths. Lots and lots of pins will help.

Hope some of this is helpful to some of you.....

Gita

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I know how I want the nap to go, just not sideways! Is the entire thing made out of the velvet, or is there an "under dress"? I've sewn velvet before, so I can handle that! Which way is the up and which way is the side on the pattern!

Victoria Harbour, ON

No underdress and no lining...just the pieces cut from the material of choice..Gita answered all your questions, thank you Gita..appreciate it...

Now Gita, you should be doing one as well...

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Doe if I can jump in here. The seam you sew is the back of the garment, and the seams will be going on the side of that.
I think I am personally going to make the seam in the front, ands possible leave it open, so I can put an undergarment on the Santa, and have it showing.
Just my personal preference I think. I may change my mind, once I start working on him, but I will cut both materials the same, (undergarment and top coat).
Yes, I would like to see the finished Santa as well, maybe that would help us!
Betty, can you post a picture please?
Linda Kay

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Linda Kay, did you already cut yours?

asking cause I'm using the faux fur, and the nap on that is one way! lol! so how would I cut out my pattern?

can someone post a pix of the pattern with an arrow showing the direction of the nap?

I'm thinking also about putting the seam in front and leaving it open...so it looks more like a fur coat. maybe doing and undergarment in gold or red.
the furs I got (I'm doing 2 santas) are tan for one and white for other. I bought extras of both colors so I could use scraps as edging on alternate robes.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

ps .... There IS a photo at the top of this thread..first post :)

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

cut out your pattern then lay your fabric on the table single layer and lay the pieces on it marking which will be the top so the nap goes the way you want it to ...as all the pieces are basically square shapes of some sort
thought though is you may need a bit more fabric to cut them all the same way with a nap to it
that is how I would do it

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

I know, I'm just trying to figure out what way is up on that pattern :) I cant seem to wrap my brain around it....
so if I can figure out what way is up...(neckline vs hemline) then I'd know what way to cut the fur. I have almost 2 yards of both colors. so no problem cutting the pieces separately if need be...

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ok let me try it this way then

I've made a rough drawing of the pieces and put the measurements on the side and the nap direction on them
because they are more or less squares take the wide part and pick which one you want for the top by the way you want the nap to run...make sense?

How do I find the first post to see the pic?
