Where is your DG central?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Very nice bookcases, Nance! Is that a stone BBQ pit outside near the chairs? If so, did Bill build it? Congratulations on your almost anniversary!! How nice!!

I can't imagine not being able to have a woodpile!!!

Southeastern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the wishes, Louise. That is the top of the old well. I would prefer a BBQ pit.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Nance - whatever it is, the stones look cool!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Sherrie - aren't you glad we "forced" you to clean up your playroom? LOL!

No offense, Gloria, but I couldn't live with those rules - we have four out of the seven on your list! In my hometown, in the 70's, there was a development that wouldn't let you shake your dust mop in your own backyard! No thanks! If it's my property, I'll do what I want on it!

Nance, I had one of those 1920's bookcases when I was younger, but it was in pretty bad shape. Your older case is to die for!

Get this ...... I just got cited yesterday for not repairing the flashing along the edge of the roofline on the side of my house that a windstorm damaged 2 months ago. $500 if not fixed in 7 days ....... geesh! One strip of flashing, 6 inches by 6 foot!! $500.00!!!! People are leaving the area in DROVES and this is what I get in the mail! Hmmmmmm

Hate to see what happens if I dried my laundry outside! :-)

Anyhooooo ...... on a much lighter note!:

Here's a shot of one of my two babies. This is Queen Boudicca, on the kitchen counter, still wet out of the shell! About 10 minutes old, maybe (or should I say "out of shell"). Cacatua Alba, or Great White Umbrella Cockatoo.

I hand-raised both her and her brother, Leukos. They just turned 7 this past May & June. I took the egg that Boudicca was in from the nest and incubated it, and as predicted, mama and papa produced a second clutch (Leukos) which I left in the nest for the parents to hatch and feed for the first couple weeks.

Leuk is definitely the "wild one," while Queen Boudicca totally lives up to her name and title.

btw:

Queen Boudicca - Iceni Tribe - Norfolk, UK area - around 60 AD. She and her daughters were abducted by Nero after her husband, King Prasutagus, died and bequeathed half his land and riches to Rome the other half to his daughters. Apparently, that wasn't enough, so Nero's troops went to take the rest. Roman law allowed inheritance only through the male line.

It seems, Prasutagus had lived well on borrowed Roman money, and on his death his subjects had become liable for the debt.

Needless to say, unmentionable things befell the Queen and her 2 beautiful daughters.

Upon her escape and reunion with her sullied daughters, Boudicca easily rallied her tribe and organized many of the tribes of Great Britain to rebel against Rome, take back Londinium and the rest of Great Britain. Her campaign was noted as a first victory in the downfall of Nero and the Roman Empire as it was known at the time.

Boudicca was adopted as the namesake for Queen Victoria, as Boudicca means victory. Bodacious has been attributed as a derivation, though some say it came from bold and audacious.

OK, I have put one masters degree to enough use at the moment! (actually, I learnt that on the discovery channel, I think, during a Biography episode on Nero!)

She just opened her eyes for the first time.

I had to look at it 5 times. It looks like something that you would see in a Sci-Fi Horror flick!!! My gosh.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Sherrie - that's a real "schicken"! LOL!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Ain't she purtty.

Here she is about 6 weeks old.

Eyes open, "pin" feathers growing.

Who had one. Columbo? The detective.

Baretta .... His was a Triton Cockatoo, though .... those have a couple yellow feathers pulling an "Alfalfa" sticking out the wrong way on their head.

Here is how Boudicca looks right now.

Edit: Fred was the name of the Triton on Baretta.

Wasnt she a Celtic warrior?

Wow--didn't know so many folks were into tropical birds---my next door neighbor inheirited an African gray--Charlie's screams are legendary!--My cousin has a yellow-fronted Amazon that he raised from a babe----Heineken turns his back on me every time I try to talk to him. Here is my computerroom/dogs' bedroom. They are usually bugging me when I try to type, but they're off on a ride now.

oooooohhhhhhhh Sue the Schicken comment actually gave me a belly laugh

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

WNY--do you breed 'Toos?

My dream Too, which will more than likely always stay a dream is the larger species of Black Palm Too. I have seen them in person a few times, and would love to have one!

The Hyacinth, oh boy, I have held them, actually helped feeding a small brood, and would have loved to have owned one, the seller was only asking $8,500... :-/ Maybe if I don't buy any hosta, DL's, or any other plants for about 4 years, then maybe I can get one...lol.

I can't wait until the end of the month, the view outside of my office area/DG central is going to be a little different, in a good way!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Hey Thom: I have your same grand aspirations.

I do not "YET" breed actively -- birds, that is! I love the Black Palm and Hyacinth. However, I would start with Scarlets or Military Macaws, and (of course) African Greys and Umbrella Cockatoos (more wallet friendly).

I even have TWO huge rolls (6' x 100' rolls; 3" x 1/2" spacing) of heavy gauge wire I can make cages for them out of in storage (probably 10 years now) that I have used more to make plant tables than cages. Maybe when I retire??

The long story (not so) short of how I came to have this rewarding opportunity is:

I had an African Grey and wanted to get a cockatoo. (new house furnace improperly installed -- CO poisoning -- got my Papaguyo, the grey, and Gennie, the Conure -- Sad, sad days, but the Cockatoo made it!!)

Found a "wild" cockatoo for $400 (a male) locally and worked him to be handleable. He's awesome.

Skip to a year later. Mom's (a school nurse) co-workers (Married 5th & 6th grade teachers) adopted a female on their summer vacation and showered her with love and attention all day long.

Skip to the end of summer. Back to school. No more attention for the lovely Lady, who promptly started to pick and pull all her feathers. Soon into the school year, I was GIVEN her, as the owners could not bear to see her plucked and picking and they knew I had the male and was good with birds. We call her Lady Godiva, as she truly pulled EVERY feather she could reach. Ever see a naked Cockatoo??? Not a pretty sight!

Took about 5 or 6 months of having them in the same room (opposite ends) to moving them next to each other, to where they would sit on their perches, next to each other, against the wires separating them, trying to touch.

Woo Hoo!! A Breeding Pair of Cockatoos!!! Well, it took them almost EIGHT years to produce eggs!!! The first year they did, however, the eggs were addle .... She was doing her job, but HE wasn't doing his!! OH NO!!??!!

The next year, 2001, I got The Queen in late April and then her brother about a month later, early June.

Interesting note: Both of my babies get the same showering of attention, however, Leukos munches his feathers, just a bit. Something he learnt from Mom whilst still in the nest box!! About 6 years now, and this is the first full year he has let his feathers grow in, still a little tattery, but full feathered.

Queen Boudicca is perfectly feathered, from head to toe. Monkey see, monkey do, I guess, with Leuk.

Leuk and Boo are kept in separate rooms, so Boo has not seen Leuk chew. I keep them separated, so if I ever sell one, the other wouldn't be so lonely and heartbroken. Like I would ever sell one of them!!

Then, one day, while the babies were still VERY small, I took them to PetSmart to show them off (the bird girl there wanted to see them, who was I to argue). While standing in line at the checkout, the couple behind me expressed an interest in adopting my "proven breeding pair" to add to their flock.

I said noooooo; they said, $2,800; I said "When you want them?"

Since I really wanted PETS, and not a BREEDING PAIR I could not socialize with, I kept my babies and made a good $2,400 in profit. The key here is PROVEN as opposed to BONDED breeding pair. Proven pairs have laid and hatched eggs before, Bonded pairs just get along well together.

OK, another novel, I'll stop ...... for now!! :-)

[brief side note: If you EVER have time, go to your ZOO and get involved in their bird breeding program and volunteer to feed some babies (or ANY animal, for that matter), even if just for a day!! An opportunity you won't regret! esp. if you have kids -- Plus, ZOOS NEED VOLUNTEERS!!]

Here is a shot of one of the greatest sights I ever saw! My first Eggs In The Nest Box!!

Oops!

Sorry, JoAnn .... I meant to include:

Queen Boudicca was queen of the Iceni Tribe, who were a Brythonic tribe and inhabited an area of Britain corresponding roughly to the modern-day county of Norfolk between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD.

I think Celtic is a liberal term applied to most tribes of Great Britain around the time.

I think the Iceni were actually a P-Celtic speaking tribe, more specifically .... But, I am no expert on the ancient Britons.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I was close. Your explanation is more correct.
I saw her bio on Herstory Channel.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

HERstory, Indeed!

For such an esoteric bit of information, I am constantly amazed that people actually know who she is!

And, yes, I think we are talking "nose tissue" vs. "kleenex" when it comes to celtic.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have always been facinated with pre historical civilizations. I am not much for remembering who came first or the periods but I am keen on the way pre hist (1000bc on ) invented objects to solve problems.
The Sythien(sp) tribes ornimentation of their clothing and jewelry especially. I would have been an archiologist if I hadn't been a potter.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Funny how now that I am "almost history" I have much more fascination for it! Now I can't get enough of it!!

I never saw anything specifically about Scythian jewelry before. Thanks!

Nice stuff!!

"almost history"...very funny!!! LOL Willie - I find your birding experiences fascinating. I can just imagine how excited you must have been when that first egg showed up! I have a friend in Fla. who breeds lots of exotic birds at his ranch near Punta Gorda. He and his partner have built a huge new climate-controlled aviary that I am anxious to see this winter.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I dabbled in casting silver jewelry but realized just in time ,it was not for me.
I do love the art of it and the Sythien craftsmanship is superb.
I also watched the unreathing of a "Princess Tomb" in Georgia and since the ground is frozen there the tomb was in nearly perfect condition for something 2000 years old.
The headpiece and preservation of the sheer linens she was buried with was phenominal. Her horse was also buried with her.
Modern computers use in replicating her "look" made a awsome sight.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Sounds pretty cool, JoAnne.

Here is the latest view of my DG Central.....still haven't decided what all will go on the walls, but the shelves are filling up fast!

Oh, it's lovely, Louise!

Nobody will ever see my DG central; it's usually my bed. I'm with Kassia. I have a view of a wind chime. On supernice days I go out and sit in the shade, but the glare is a problem. (Can't someone invent something to fix that?)

Sunglasses? :-)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Beautiful Louise

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Ha ha ha, Sherrie, whoever patented THAT idea should be rich for sure! I can't remember why, for some reason that didn't seem to work. Maybe they weren't dark enough, or I was on battery so the screen was too dim, or my eyes are failing. Or all of the above. I think I ended up lying on a towel on the grass (in upstate NY) with a blanket over my head so I could see. From the neck down I was perfectly comfy, but boy, my head was warm ... But I got a LOT done. I was working on DH's sonata. I had headphones on too. Good thing nobody took a picture of me then!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Carrie and JoAnne. It sure was a mess in that room after the house was jacked up!! Hank put a lot of work into bringing it back for me. He had to do the ceiling, walls and floor after the plaster guy left. It's so nice to finally know where the bills are that need to be paid!! LOL It's sort of a "mixed use" room with storage of some kitchen stuff in a little teeny closet and in the corner china cabinet, and it's the location of the printer and all the stuff that goes with that, along with all the manuals and other "couple business" we have. Plus it is my sewing room as well. It is visible from the kitchen, so I have to keep some pretty flowers on the desk for me to see when I'm in the kitchen. LOL

Oh man, these are some really attractive DG Centrals on this thread! Mine is pretty simple:
