Deb - yes, I have moose!! LOL Our live one we call "Holiday Mel" because he as made an appearance on Columbus Day, Memorial Day and Fourth of July. We haven't seen him once this year though.

Jen - thanks! I love being able to see my Friendship Garden, etc.. Here is a better view taken from my window....

Nice!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, Jo Anne, glad to hear your back from surgery. Here's to a speedy recovery.

Love your pics from today, Victor, especially the castor shots. Nice!

Debilu and dragonfly, great collages of the butterflies.

Shelly, what I do with prolifs is cut them from the scape, though I leave a couple inches below it. Then I put in a cup of water on a sunny windowsill with just the bottom part of the plantlet touching the water or just into the water. You can also plant in the ground. Do the same as you would for the water, and put the bottom part of the plantlet just below the soil. Keep the soil moist. You could put some rooting hormone on it to give it a boost as well. I almost always get roots by doing it in water, though my problem is I never seem to get around to planting them. You gotta go the whole way if you want them to live. Duh!

Nice office, Louise, and I love the vase full of flowers.

I don't think my office, which is my bedroom as well, would pass the 'Victor test'. Too cluttered! I would be embarrassed to post a picture of it!

I am keeping my fingers crossed that 'Hanna' will not be anything too serious. We really do need the rain. My poor gardens are so dry. I just washed my car today, too. I guess it's all my fault!

So are you up and on the computer at your usual time already JoAnn? hopefully you are sleeping in!

Nancy - feel better soon!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks RC Got a lot of sleep yeaterday so will doze on Vicodin today.
My DD doesn't know it yet but she will be "Nurse Jane Fuzzy wuzzy" today.
I will start an office or DG communication central.
Should be interesting for those who have wireless.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

gabagoo... I hope that you are doing well soon. And don't go back to bending that knee to garden as you did before until it's been quite a while. Freshly mended menisci tear so easily for a while. I tor mine again about 5 weeks after the surgery just going down steps into the yard. That was/is not good!

Thanks for all the new, little plant info, karen. I will have to give it a try. since I have several, I have to try it a couple of different ways and see what I have success with. who knows, maybe I'll actually be able to grow a plant from scratch!

I finally got into the yard for an hour or two today and there was only a few things interesting going on.

Can you tell I like blue Delphiniums?!! lol. These three pics are all three different plants. I'm not showing the whole plant because the foliage got singed while I was gone.

I'm glad that your up and on the computer! that's a great sign. So, since I can't send a get well plant, wireless and instantaneously, I'll send this delphinium picture as a get well picture. :-p

good morning Debilu. Thanks bunches. I'm just so glad that the flowers didn't get parched as well (at least not all of them). I was anticipating seeing them bloom all summer!

Now I just need yours and dragonfly's butterflies and to figure out those collages and then I'll be set!
Have a good morning all.

Debilu! What size garbage can did you use for potatoes.
Did you start them from seed potatoes?
Where did you put the can?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

JoAnn, I used one too small, you should use 30 gallon size - mine is half that. I used seed potatoes, the can is on my upper deck, gets half sun half shade - needs to be there away from potted plant stealing puppy!

Here is the thread that got me started.

Thanks Deb I want to do it next year just for kicks.
Where did you get your seedpotatoes

I got the potatoes from GroMoore. I want to make a rain barrel too, that one looks nice.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Hope everyone is recouping as nicely as the awesome blooms are plentiful!!!

OK, y'all ...... can't possibly be any worse than this!!

The window not only looks out to the backyard, but also down into the greenhouse below.

Let's seem 'em!

Edit: Ooops! Didn't see there was already a thread for this started!

Here is a "watercolor" that I created (PhotoShop) from a snap of the view out that window, which I turned into the annual christmas card.

This was the original photo from cheap, low quality phone camera.

I was surprised such a crappy photo would produce a fine watercolor.

Now you can really see how small and cramped in my backyard is!

WNYwillieB, great card. Love seeing your cactus plants. Nice collection. Great juxtaposition with the snow. Not ready for any of that yet.

Garden is waning. But the white dahlia's, zinnias and cosmos are a bright spot. Pleased because I started the zinnia and cosmos from seed and the dahlia's are ones that I managed to store through the winter. Of course I screwed up the labels and had no idea which ones were which. So the short white ones are in totally the wrong spot. I will get it right this fall, I hope. Patti

Nice shots. Beautiful delphs, Shelly. Feel better, Nancy! I'm hoping to avoid surgery but the pain doesn't seem to go away for long.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I love those blue delphiniums too. I had a few return this summer after years of failure. I may have found a good spot to make them happy.

Here are some current pinks. Sedums are a favorite of mine. Maybe because the do so well and color up so late. I love them when they are green too. I hope this cosmos reseeds as I started it from seed but only had a few survive. Rugosa roses putting on a new show. Patti

Very nice Patti. I love sedum too. So many looks, varieties, etc. I have to try a rugosa.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Best wishes and speedy recoveries to ge1836 and gabagoo.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Dyane. How are you and the baby?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, Yes do look for a great rugosa. So many to chose from. I love the hips and the birds do too in the winter.

Here are some warm tones. Another zinnia from seed. Zowie Yellow Flame. Also a Gaillardia pulchella 'Sundance Bicolor' that I started from seed is finally blooming. The canna are finally doing more then be just lush leaves. Patti

Nancy (gabagoo). Ouch. I know that pain. No fun. But you will feel so much better now that it is repaired. Speedy recovery. Patti

Glad you're feeling better, Jo Anne---your turn too, Nancy! Sorry about the knee problems, guys--I wear orthotics to keep knee pain away--expensive, but not as bad as surgery! The collages are so nice--not sure I could do those on this slow computer----am afraid to post my computer room---it's the dogs' room--and here is the little bird-catcher!

So lots of knee surgeries on the forum.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Robindog, beautiful dog. Mine are sprawled out on the rug in front of me. We are about to go work outside. I fill the holes that they dig. I can't seem to get them to dig them where I need them. Bulb time soon, so it would be nice.

Here they are yesterday in the yard plus a few other goodies. Lemon queen is everywhere. I will be moving a bunch of it this fall. Glads are doing OK, but not sure I will be pulling them out and storing them again as it is so much work. Plus they should be staked and I can't seem to get that together. Another rose which has bloomed it's little head off most of the summer is 'Morden Sunrise' which I got in Dan's Great Lake rose coop. It is a Shrub rose from the Parkland Series [Canadian] so it should be hardy. Very healthy so far. Patti

I like my Lemon Queen. Very cheery.

Gardeners and their joints and backs HUMMMM

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

In my case, gardening probably just made it worse. I believe both my back and knee problems were already there.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

My bum knee was the result of hard fall on an icy ski slope at Mt Tremblant in the mid 80's. I didn't do anything medically to repair the torn ACL at that time. It was tolerable until 2004 when it became very unreliable and painful. I held out for what, I don't know except to moan and suffer. The Dr who did my surgery replaced my ACL with a Allograft, said he thought my good recovery had everything to do with my gardening. Steady use but not too strenuous. No regrets, though I am still not skiing. But people who suffer from chronic back issues have my total sympathy. Patti

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

A potter friend of mine has had three useless back surgeries.
Thay just don't work and the recovery time from them is ages at least a year or more.
Same for miniscus repair. I had a knee cleaned of calcium build up and a M. repair. It was a year and a half befor I realized I hadn't had any discomfort in the joint.
I have to be careful to keep my heel under the knee joint when sittingor standing, called a trick knee in the old days.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Nancy, I hope you recover quickly from your knee surgery. I think I would want it done in the winter, when I can't be out in the gardens anyhow. Maybe yours was so bad you couldn't wait?

Nice delph pics, Shelly. I love the colors in them. And you can see the diamond dusting on them, too.

Patti, you should get seedlings from your cosmos coming up in the spring if you let them reseed, or you can collect the seed and plant yourself in the spring. They generally reseed readily.

Hate to hear about all the knee and back problems. I have some myself, but not bad enough for surgery. Had surgery on a broken ankle back in '86 and osteoarthritis ever since. Take 2 Aleve's a day for the pain/stiffness. Also helps with the general pain associated with long days gardening. Many of my problems are from being too heavy. My own fault in that regard, but hard to change. I am getting more exercise lately, so here's hoping it will help.
