what a freaky bug... YUCK... I thought my camel crickets were bad... not compared to that
Garden Photos - Part 34
OK - now I'm weirded out...watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNcIUIULafw
this one is also for not the faint at heart
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0CGkD4mcuQ&feature=related
Generally speaking, I am not sqeamish, but today I got bugged, weirded, and grossed out. Bugs eating mammals just doesn't seem right. I'm flicking things off my shoulders that don't exist.
Victor, I'm hoping there's no humps going on.
Okay, there is now something on tv about cheese made from maggots. I'm going to bed to toss and turn during nightmares. Ugh.
Shelly, great shot of cosmos and friend! I love butterfly pics.
What a pretty moss rose, Pixie! Do you know the name of it, and is it disease resistant? I don't grow many roses because of too many pests and black spot and mildew and such. Don't like plants that require too much care, as I already have too many things to do. I also like your pic of the bees on the thistle. Also like your queen Anne's lace and golden rod. I love thistles and other so called 'weeds', such as common mullien and poke weed. Fantastic and fascinating plants!
I absolutely love your preying mantis pics, Victor! I especially like the one of the mantis on the sedum. What a great photographer you are, and nice camera you have. I'm assuming you use a zoom for those shots. Is your camera a DSLR? I have a Fuji Finepix with a zoom, but I can't get that close with it. Just won't focus if I zoom in really close. I have a close focus setting that I use when I want to get really close to flowers and such, but can't get too close to insects and such without them taking off on me. I don't like the way my camera does shots other than close-ups or medium shots. I don't think long shots (landscapes, overall pics of the gardens, anything more than about 5 feet or so away) look good, just not very sharp. I have really been wanting to upgrade to a better camera, but I spend too much money on my gardens instead. I only have 4 mega pixels on mine, and would like sharper images. I love photography, and it's been a hobby of mine for years.
Okay, onewish, I checked out that Cornholio video, and just could finish. Said to myself, "okay, enough of that!" Not exactly my taste.
Now those PM videos were pretty freaky!
Karen
Okay, venu, if you think cheese made from maggots is gross, how about using maggots to eat out the dead flesh in rotting wounds of living people? It's been done, and limbs have been saved because of it. I think if I had a choice between losing a limb from gangrene or having maggots eat out the rotting flesh, I think I would say, "bring one the maggots", gross and repulsive as that may be. Do a Google search on 'maggot debridement therapy'. You will be surprised, and most likely grossed-out.

Victor, I swear you must have more than a half acre, or was it an acre that you said you had. Either way, I can't imagine how you fit it all in there as well as a pond and a pool! And then have time to maintane it all!
Pixie, i love all your plants, but the dogwood in particular!
Venu, I love that yellow wildflower.
So, I did get out, in the daylight to see the yard today and was hoping to take some pictures. But, it was a mess. I knew that the weeds would be going crazy by now. But, so have been the moles, gophers, deer (haven't had time to spray the spray), other creatures, and to top it off... the person that was supposed to be coming over regularly to take care of the stuff that needs hand watering or an extra dose with a sprinkler every now and then, wasn't around as much as they should've been. So, with all the fried leaves and flowers, mole hills, weeds, and chewed stuff, there wasn't a thing decent to take a picture of!!!! hmmmpf. ok, sorry about the ranting!
Anyhow, since I sort of look at the forest as my (and others) really large garden. I'm throwing in another scenery shot!
Jan, you might recognise this one, it's very near the three sisters. But you would've seen the other side of it.

RC thats lovely!!!!!!!!!
Karen, moss rose is not a real rose...it's an annual and moss rose is the common name. The real name is Portulaca, mine self seed so they have come back .....not bad for an annual!

Why is Jim Stafford and David Bellamy popping into mind ........
:-)
HEY! Just so you know, this is the weekend for
Buffalo's Annual Chicken Wing Festival!!
Perfect weather!
Gorgeous shots, Shelly! It's about 6/10 acre total, including the house and pool. Can't say I do have enough time to maintain everything. This weekend is one I always look forward to - closing the pool! (Not to mention school starting this week too.)
Karen, the first series of those PM shots were with my new dslr and zoom lens. The second series was with my point and shoot (Sony H1) on macro, and I was so close I was practically hitting it. Had to back off a bit when I saw the camera blocking its light!
Wow! Just viewed those PM videos. Now I'm thinking I got too close!
Victor, just shown DH your amazing PM shots. He loved them and especial loved the color/tones in the one with the sedums/lav etc. He thought the gastronomical shots were fabulous. I didn't know they went after such big prey. Thanks for sharing. I would rather go to Buffalo and eat wings. Patti
Thanks, Patti. I'm sure the PM's would too...
RC, my guess because it is kinda flat is Mt. Scott with Crater Lake. Do I win a prize? hee-hee. Sorry your plants weren't as well-taken care of as you hoped.
Judging from the reactions I better go look at those videos.
very nice Helen
What a lovely color and I can almost smell it!
Oh, thanks for correcting me one that about the moss rose, Pixie. Now I feel dumb!
RC, great pics of those mountains.
Victor, thanks on the info on your cameras. Yes, my camera has a macro setting, and I do have to get very close to use it. I guess PMs don't shy away like butterflies and bees and such when you get that close. Can't zoom in with my macro setting, but it still gets great shots.
Karen
Here's an example of a shot taken with my macro setting. This is tradescantia (spider wort).
Oh, nice pic of Laura Harwood, Pixie.
Helen, love that Bonica Bush Rose. Does it have good disease resistance? I will only grow roses that aren't susceptible to black spot and such, that don't require spraying.
Also, Helen, that hibiscus, does it turn red with age, or something, or is that 2 different varieties you have pics of there?
Karen
Bonica is here for a long long time. This year the deer didn't find it. Bought at Jungs Seeds, they grow own root roses and that is one of them, so winter hardy. BIG bush underplanted with artemisa (silver) it also gets the seed pods (rose hip) which turn red, that's why I like it. Some times, yes black spots, like this year beacuase of the rain. It sits way on top of the hill and produces so well....
hibiscus 2 pictures Southern Belle red and Southern Bell pink. from "Park Seed". The pink I had in containers last year (from my own seed) on my Patio, dirty but WOW.
In back of this bench is the prennial garden, in it is Bonica
Wow - Laura is gorgeous, Celeste.
I was just out on the back deck and a parakeet flew in and out of the yard.
Pet astray, I wonder if they migrate or survive the winter here out doors?
Even if it is just 6/10 of an acre Victor, you have enough plants for at least 3 acres in there! And it's all great, especially the PM's!!
Jan, You're pretty darn close!!!! Your prize??? hmmm....a good pat on the back! But, it's actually closer to three sisters than that. As the crow flies, it's only 4 or 5 mi. away from three sisters. It's Diamond peak. But, when in Redmond, it's sometimes blocked from view by the three sisters depending on where you're at. and Mt. scott is very near it. In fact, I may have taken a picture that caught mt. scott in it.
I love the hibiscus pics. helen!
I had 3 rose bushes to get into the ground and I finally did it!
I planted my 'Fourth of July' , 'Pink Knockout' and
'Morden Sunrise' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/75128/
Karen, I actually saw that in the "flesh" many years ago on a horse's wound. The maggots did a great job of cleaning it up. Looks gross, but highly effective.
Celeste, Laura is beautiful. I'm becoming a fan of dark lilies due to your pics!
Helene, your Bonica is wonderful. I have one, but it's showing signs of drought stress. Yours looks 100% better.
Shelly - those sunset shots should be entered in the photo contest! Very pretty!
Victor - love the PM shots.....amazing you could get them!
Very pretty blooms from everyone!! Took me awhile to get through all the pics because I had to keep wiping the drool off the screen. LOL
Nice combo!!!!
Jan, the upside of this is that I had to learn a new, and entirely silly photo editor (using a coworkers computer out in "nowhere". It was a good skill to learn, I'm sure. Anyhow, here's the picture with Mt. Scott in it. this picture could actually have been attached to the one up above if I had zoomed out some more. Unfortunately the pic might be huge since I'm not familiar with resizing in this program. Actually, I goofed. The one that says Mt. Thielson, should be labeled Mt. Washington. They look nearly identical, but thielson is about 50 mi. away.
