Todays Weather in Your Garden - 28

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

What a beautiful day it was today.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jan, go there!!
:)

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jen, it was gorgeous, wasn't it? And some more tomorrow. But has it rained south of the Raritan? I have not had more than an inch or two since sometime in June. I'm getting depressed about the gardening. And our friends north of us have been flooded. Why can't Mom Nature even the stakes??

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I didn't get a drop. Our ground is soooo dry. They're calling for rain this weekend. We may or may not be going to the shore tomorrow afternoon, I can't remember if my friends said if they're staying in Brigatine(sp?) or Barnegat. I have to call them.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Our ground is so dry, I feel sorry for the weeds..now that's saying something.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I did some hand watering today and noticed a mean looking wasp following me. I finally figured out he was following the water. On the upside, I watered the agastache and noticed a dozen honey bees. YEA! Haven't seen them in a long while

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I started with the soaker hoses today. Got about half done. The rest tomorrow. We definitely need rain. Gorgeous day though. Perfect!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I've been using the drip system I have every other day for my roses & clematis & my shade garden, 3 systems target the roots for 1/2 hr @ 20psi, the lawn sprinklers take care of the rest... ☺

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I really like that micro sprinkler set up we put in.... so far so good.... we still have some tweaking to do... and I might add a few drip lines for the really thirsty ones... but it's going to make my life easier next year... we are putting dippers in all my large pots on the posts

and it was a beautiful day here.... and going to be good sleeping temp tonight... praying for some rain though

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Right now 48# with a sunny day expected and a hi of 78#
Good thing this is the day its my turn to hostesss the "Loud Lunch"
10 Women artists ,and it is loud. Weve been doing a monthly lunch for nearly 30 years.
I'm letting the ones who can winter over cuttings, take cuttings from my abundant coleus.
With night temps going the way they have, this might be the end of the garden altogether.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I don't remember it being so cold, so early .... so often.

Partly Sunny, high of 77° expected today, at this rate in 3 weeks I'll have to take in my tropicals!

South Hamilton, MA

Quite cool at 9:25 am

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sunny with clear blue skies. Up to the mid 60s now from low 50s overnight. Nice dry air and the hose dragging is really getting old and not really doing the job for a lot of parts of the yard. Rain, a nice day long soaking rain is what we need to keep things from shriveling up.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Another nice one, though not as clear as yesterday. 72 with a nice breeze.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Another beautiful day. Only a high of 78. NICE!
Speaking of artists where has Amy(amethystsm) been????

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice day - at least until I was stung by a bee a few minutes ago! While picking peaches. Could not see what type it was. Got my left index finger - on the inside. Typing with one hand now. Hopefully it won't swell too much.

South Hamilton, MA

Try ice.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I am icing it now. Thanks a lot, WC! Not routine when you're highly allergic.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

ouch Victor... sorry to hear that... hope you are ok

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Sneak attack? huh Victor?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, ladies. Yes, that's the way I always seem to get it and the allergist warned about it - don't put your fingers where you can't see them!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hope you're okay victor, no need for the pen I hope??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No pen. Dread the day I have to use it! The allergist told me the best thing to do immediately after a sting is a) take some Benadryl, and b) make a paste of meat tenderizer and rub it into the sting. I did that and then put on ice for a while and so far there is hardly any swelling. Back to two-hand typing. Thanks.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

From last night.

Thankfully, there are pens if needed. Meat tenderizer I hear is great. Glad you're typing with 2 hands now. My cousin has had to go to ER in the era before pens. My DGD has an allergy to peanuts, so there is a pen available at all times. amazing what has peanuts or is processed in plants where there have been peanuts.
Lovely pic from last night.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

victor, if you get stung and you have no meat tenderizer you can try an old remedy that my dad taught me which always worked for me. Take a cigarette or find a thrown away butt on the ground and take out some of the tobacco, wet it (spit works) and put it on the stung site. It will draw out the poison very quickly. My DH has a pen, but now he uses the "think" method to avoid going to the hospital. He tries to meditate to keep his heart from racing. I prefer to haul him to the hospital for a shot asap. But the last two times he has been stung he has been OK without the trip to the hospital. I have very little reaction to most stings except one from a bug that looks like a giant mosquito that caused a huge infection in my leg a few years ago. I had to make several trips to the hospital to have it attended to. Best with yours.

Nice picture. We had an amazing orange sunset last night, but I was too lazy to go get the camera. Now I am worrying about the path that Gustav might take. DS is in New Orleans. I emailed him a list of must do's if he needs to evacuate. He is pretty good about survival skills so he has a plan already. Plus he has good common sense. He is an EMT and is a dive instructor and has spent months at a time at sea, so he is fine with roughing it. He is going to have everything that he needs to take with him laid out by tomorrow and because it is labor day he will get off Sun and Monday so he can leave Sat night after work at the restaurant. He went this morning early to get supplies and rations just in case. His apartment is in a house that did not flood last time. But there is no need for him to stay in New Orleans and worry. But I can stay here and worry. Patti

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the guy who owns that well sweep farm told us that .... the weed that grows in the lawn.. (will have to take a picture .. can't remember the name) if you pick it and burn it... squeeze the juice from inside on a bee sting or mosquito bite.. it works great

and said if it a pinch and you are brave (bad taste) you can chew it up and do the same thing

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

How's the digit, Victor?? My first sting landed me in the hospital for a lengthy stay when I was probably 7 - 8?? My last sting only caused me to feel drunk for two days. I seem to be building tolerance.

Patti: I think I got bitten by one of those last month!! I didn't see it, but BOY! was there some severe pain, couldn't even sleep the first night, soooo much pain (and I usually don't feel pain) and a purple (looked like it was dying/rotting) welt the size of a half dollar, with a large bruise all around that! Thanks for the story, as I think, now, that might be what got me!!! I honestly thought that those didn't bite!

Showers forecasted for day and night

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Temp 67.5°, Wind NE 3.0, Rh 62%, Baro 29.88 steady. ☺

Mostly sunny now with partly cloudy skies and 77° expected for a high today.

No allergies here, which ironically is probably the reason I haven't been stung by a bee for the last 20yrs!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

WNYwillieB, sounds just like the reaction that I got. I know that is what got me. It landed on me, I even commented to DH about how beautiful it was. I didn't feel it bite, but seconds after I swished it away, I felt a burning and then it was very swollen withing a few minuets and throbbing. I felt sick. I went later that day to my Doctor who treated it and he insisted that I come in the next day, which was a Sunday to see him. He told me to call him at his house when I left my house and he would meet me at the hospital, but not to check into the energy room because that would cost money. He just walked in and took a look. Great Doctor. Lucky. I forget what meds he gave me. It got very swollen and dark purple and then hard. It lasted a long time. My whole leg was sore for a long time too. I killed one the other day in our bedroom. I tried to get it out the window, but it wanted to stay near my side of the bed. Bad mistake. I should have taken a picture of it. I read that the most toxic spider venom is actually in a daddy long legs, but that they can't inject it into human skin as we are too tough! Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. It's a bit swollen this morning, so it does feel a bit weird when I bend it, but in the past a sting in the finger resulted in swelling of the entire hand and, eventually, even the lymph glands under the arm.

I'll try to remember that remedy, Patti - thanks. I think DH's method won't do much if there are multiple stings. The pen is only for serious anaphylactic reaction - difficulty breathing, swollen tongue, etc. The reaction has to be systemic. Best of luck with your son. Hope the storm goes a different way - to a less inhabited area.

Thomaston, CT

Sounds like what put my GD in the ER last month! My worst sting was the summer I broke my hip--got out for the 1st time on the patio with a book--felt something in my hair--yellow jacket--got stung in the neck---couldn't walk---doctor not in office--lots of ice, Benydryl & tears--my DH said I was cursed--felt like I was! Weather today is cloudy & a wee bit warmer than yesterday--hope my FL company doesn't freeze!

Thomaston, CT

Sorry you still have ill effects from sting, Victor. And Patti---we're praying for everyone in that area!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

It got downright chilly here last night high 50's. Should only reach 80 today, my kind of weather. Looked like it was going to rain but the clouds cleared away and the sun's out. I'll be breaking out the hose again, I guess.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Perfect day here! Yes, Mother Nature needs to give those folks in New Orleans a break. The place is still a mess in many parts. Many people are still in small trailers next to their ruined homes, very sad. Patti

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Have been watering all morning. DH got about nine 5gal. buckets, drilled a very small hole in bottom and I set them around, then fill them up and let them soak in slowly rather than run-off. I also have the hose set on slow and just move it around about every 15 min. or so unless I get side-tracked.
Delightful sleeping weather.
Yes, praying for the gulf coast area.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Watering here too. I used to roll up the hose when I was done. Now I just leave it out. I know I'll be using it every day.

hoping Gustav loses some steam!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wish we would get some rain from him though. A nice soaking over a day or two would be nice.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hannah might bring us some.
