Todays Weather in Your Garden - 28

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I am big into wetlands and waterways after spending a couple of years as chair of our watershed committee!

Cooling off even more than it was today - down to the mid 50s tonight. Clear and hoping to see lots of stars if everyone leaves their outside lights OFF!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice (relatively) dark sky at Acadia.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Nice sky on Long Island while we were there, too. My friends plan to move up to Albany Co. where there is supposedly still a good black sky. They bought some land in Waterlo. He's big-time astronomy!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Victor....do I use my imagination now? Or is there a photo? LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No sky photos. Lynn, even with dark clear skies and a powerful scope, you're limited with what you can see through it. The atmosphere can be a real pain! You can get nicer photos though.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Friends are planning a trip to China next year to see the eclipse. They just got back from Siberia after viewing the solar eclipse there. He has many scopes - I was amazed!

Loving the low humidity! I'm sure my plants loved the higher humidity, except for the cacti!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Another great sleeping night! 61 and clear now. Forecast 55 as the overnight low. Love it.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

The atmosphere is more forgiving in the winter time, (less turbulence). The bright planets, (Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Saturn) and the moon are "easy" targets. Andromeda (M31) & its sister (M32), The Ring Nebula, The Hercules Cluster, The Orion Nebula, The Pleades Cluster and even the Crab Nebula are visible at certain times from NY depending on the size of your scope. Comets are cool subjects and throughout the year there are at least 6 that you can see with 10x 50 binoculars.

Obviously the darker skies = more contrast = more detail with those Deep Sky objects, but it helps to have an elevation of 10,000' or better as well! Long Island has a 'thing' about trying to keep as much dark sky as possible & we have less land mass along with coastal breezes so our humidity is usually lower than someone inland. It gives us somewhat better viewing conditions. An elevation of 10,000' or better would also help but would be rather inconvenient from a practical standpoint! ☺

Of all that I've seen in Astronomy Saturn most impressed me with it's delicate beauty, with Neptune & The Crab Nebula being my hardest challenges.

Temp 62°, Rh 66%. ☺

(I know, I know it's late... I hate Beijing time!!)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice again. 72 and clear. The highest elevation on LI is probably about 100 feet!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Funny, according to Google earth my elevation is 108 feet! lol! The Vietnam Veterans Memorial here in Brookhaven is the closest high point around me @ 266 feet, you can see both North & South coasts from there on a clear day.☺

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The top of the memorial is 266 or the land beneath it?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

The land beneath it, It's quite nice there and they make use of the wind using a wind generator to help power the town administrative offices located there.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's nice. I'm about 210'. Highest spot nearby is about 1250 feet. Just a few miles away.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Wow... that's a big difference, must be a very steep climb!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, it's a good hike. There is an old fire watchtower there that you can still climb for a great view.

South Hamilton, MA

getting to 80. that's hot for me in the sun. Inspite of the constant rain, sunny garden beds are dry.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Sounds about the same here,Iris, although it was 91ºF here today (86ºF currently)

Very dry soil with a lot of rain. And don't get me started on the humidity!!!

Thomaston, CT

It was a perfect day for planting my 3 new plants, but Iris & Willie, I have to agree with you---my soil was quite dry, especially in the sunnier garden. Victor, glad you got to see the Mets---I watched that game on my niece's very big screen hi-def set. Then I had to come home to my precolombian set! Too much Scots in my husband's DNA!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha ha. Yes, it was a good game. They usually lose when I go. I only have a small, 20" hi-def tv. One of these days I'll get a bigger one for the LR. Another beautiful evening - 72 and clear.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Temp 72.1, Wind 0.7, Rh 57%, Baro 30.15 steady. ☺

Can't wait for this thread to reach 300 .....

I should have never put a pic of our (Western NY) 2006 "October Surprise" Friday the 13th freak snowstorm so near the top of the thread.

Though, I love!!!! the snow, I am not ready to see it everyday, just yet .......

:-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Are you dial-up, Willie? I can start a new thread. Don't usually do it this early since there are not too many pics on here.

Thomaston, CT

NO snow, Willie---I still haven't gotten over the everyday rain! Nice tomatoes, Sherri--and you're doing something with them. I have to tackle the peaches---looks like it will be jam---- nice cool morning, although heating up to 82 this pm.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Nope, I am on Cable .... no load problems here at all!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Okay, good. I was wondering why you mentioned wanting to reach 300...

I get ansy when 200 pics are on 1 thread. 150 pushes it. I am on cable.
