WC - great shot!

Pixie - The colors are beautiful, but not on Aug 16th! Holy cow.

The beginning of the SAAD season

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks all. Beautiful day on tap here. Hi Celeste - it was a long day driving all the way home. Ran into traffic on 290 and 90. Left at 6:50 Am and did not step into the house until 5:20! Yuck. I hate long drives. This was my longest yet.

No sunburn for me - just great memories. I saw quite a few glimpses of fall - in and out of the park. I'll show some pics later when I download them.

Nice shot WC - you're making me jealous of that zoom!

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Sitting here in my office with the window open and there is a definite twinge of Fall in the air. I've been seeing some color on trees around town, too. I'm not ready to say goodbye to summer just yet.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm sure there are plenty of warm days to come, but I'm with WC - fall is probably my favorite season, followed by spring. Psychologically, I prefer spring, but for magnificence on such a grand scale (not to mention the great feel and smell to the air), nothing tops fall. It's also my favorite time to hike.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Fall used to be my favorite season before I started gardening, but now I'm gonna have to say that I have really come to appreciate Spring, when everything wake up and looks perfect (temporarily, lol). We have lousy Springs, though, compared to other places like the mid Atlantic states. Fall in New England can't be beat, though.

Thomaston, CT

Welcome home, Victor! I love Acadia! Scenery can't be beat---hope the boys liked Thunder Hole & Sandy Beach--and the blueberries must be ripe. Weather here is excellent--SUNNY & breezy--NO RAIN in sight! But I'm signing off for the week---going to visit my niece & Jo Ann, who lives in her neighborhood---Debilu will be there, too---a mini RU!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

If Robindog and Debbilu's visit goes well, I might think about a Fall or Spring RU here, there are enough DGers in the neighborhood to make it worth while.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Robin. Yes, they loved both. And we did eat blueberries and huckleberries from the trails. Have a great time!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Temp 81.5°, Wind WNW 9.0, Rh 35%, Baro 29.77 steady. ☺

Beautiful Clear Blue skies with low humidity here today!

The Fall season has always been my favorite. Obviously for gardening purposes spring is preferable but 'man' does not live by gardening alone! There's the beautiful Fall colors which remind me of impressionist paintings and the 'Fall Run' of Bluefish & Striped Bass, Montauk being just 90 min away. -Not to mention delightfully cool temps which make strenuous work outside bearable for planting things to come up next spring.

Thanks guys - (Don't be jealous Victor, it's just a super-powered, high quality, awesome piece of optical equipment... here, I'll 'turn it down a notch' and add a 0.40 Neutral Density filter - last 'nite was great for moon shots, ! hee hee!) ☺

Yesterday evening was great for cloud formations, too! But the temperature must have dropped ten degrees the moment the sun went down! That spells 'fall' for sure.

It was just 62 in the house when I got up this morning and it took the sun a long time to warm up the kitchen. There was a definite 'snap' to the air overnight, too!! I'm a-feared that fall is upon the doorstep!!

Right now, it's a simply glorious, magnificent, superb 76 degrees with a slight calming breeze.

I love fall for planting!! Gives the plants - especially trees and shrubs- two full seasons of growth before the stress of summer. I also like it for large perennials.

I might have to get a real good zoom for my new camera.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Question about Fall planting mean....when is the latest you should ever plant something in the ground before winter, anyway? Does it depend on whether something is a perennial or a tree, etc?

I'm already fretting about how I'm going to get enough leaves this year to protect my hydrangea.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My own rule is to finish by mid November. Trees and shrubs are more forgiving, in my experience. The later they're planted, the less time plants have to take advantage of the fall growing season.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I agree with Victor. Even in my Zone 5 area, it seems that mid-November is still enough time for the little darlings to get established. And it gives us more time for dividing and sharing!

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

ok, thanks- I didn't know you could plant as late as that. For some reason, mid September is what I thought I had been told by someone, which doesn't really seem like "Fall planting" to me.

Boy, today is about as perfect a day as you can get. Just enough breeze to keep the mosquitos at bay.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Great news I have to move my first year butterfly bush. It will eventually be too big for the area thats all sun.
I don't want the sunlovers in shade.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Beautiful "F" shots, Celeste. I saw a red swamp maple yesterday on our road and I thought it was a fluke until I read how many of you have some color now. I'm not ready to go back to Fla., so I want it to slow down a bit. Our house in Fla. is dead on in the track for the TS/H. I can't bring myself to say the words, but we got a call today from the people who put up our H shutters. At 3:30 tomorrow they are going up unless there's a different track at that time. Our insurance deductible down there is $4,800, so after all the construction we had to do here, we are both crossing everything that will cross here. With wind insurance, the deductible is set for you.

WC - those are great shots! I'd say you got your money's worth with the optical equipment!!

At the moment it is 80 degrees and crystal clear with low humidity. That translates into: Perfect!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good luck, Louise. Hope it goes a different way.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

So Celeste Victor really does exist????
Glad you had a good vaca Victor, I was just about to ask if they had put you in solitary.

Hotter today than it was yesterday and I'm kinda glad since we had my daughter's b-day party outside yesterday. 86 today. It says party cloudy but I see no clouds. Oh wait there's 1!

Louise:

I am sending the appropriate anit-H vibes!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Beautiful evening here. About 72 now with the sun fading. (Noticeable difference in sunset time now - rats!)

Here's a shot from Acadia. Sand, surf, great rocks and woods. What more does one need?!!

Thumbnail by victorgardener
Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

What more could you need....dogs! We took our Bostons to Acadia at the end of June and it was a great trip...the place is incredibly dog friendly, which evidently is unusual for a Natl. Park. However, it was a huge bummer that you couldn't have the dogs at the beach even after 6pm or early in the morning, which is the way it works here.

That said, the restaurant at Jordon Pond allowed dogs, which was very cool. Seamus loved the popovers. Here he is communing with nature on a foggy day at Jordan Pond. Nice pic, Victor- looks like you had more sun than we did. The place really is so beautiful. I'm embarrassed that I don't go more often.

Thanks, Candyce and Victor! I could use some extra vibes here!!

Beautiful shot , Victor!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Seamus is adorable! What a great breed they are!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, the weather was great. Only one rainy day.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Thanks, DonnieBrook. They are indeed a great breed, and Seamus is an exceptional dog....so calm, smart, and sweet. My other one is a crazy little hyper monkey. Here they are with another Boston friend at Bass Light (My two are in the middle, and Seamus isn't as big as he looks...he only weighs two pounds more than the dog on the right!). If you like to vacation with your pets, Acadia is a great choice.

We didn't have rain, just lots of fog, which is the Maine coast for ya.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh yes - there was lots of fog, but two or three real clear days as well. Cute dogs! Looks like he would prefer a Mets wardrobe though...

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Was it insanely crowded, Victor? I know these last weeks are the busiest times of the year here, so I can only imagine. I bet the place is just spectacular in the Fall.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not as bad as I expected. Certain times the cars were all over the loop road and there were always crowds at Cadillac and Thunder Hole, but we planned it out nicely and mostly avoided the crowds. For some strange reason, not many people take the ranger tours and they really miss out on a great experience.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Well, Victor. You obvious enjoyment of the place has caused me to put it on my list for a visit, next year. Thank you for the inspiration.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No problem - glad to have helped!

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Victor, I think a lot of people tend to take a more "wing it" approach to vacations and probably don't know what they are missing. My mother in law goes to Italy every couple of years with her girl friends but the last time she went they had a tour guide take them thru the Uffizi Gallery and she said it was so much better an experience because they really learned something about the paintings for once.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

True. I've always liked at least an overview by someone knowledgeable. I also tend to plan things out in lots of detail, though I did not really do that this time. Here's a late-day shot. A bit fuzzy.
