Gardening Photos - Part 30

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Pat. Good ID! Looks right. Might be a sheltered spot, Sharon?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Might be....no, not so sheltered, but against the brick arches in front. Along with some old iris and a butterfly bush. Strange, but a really nice surprise.

How many eyes blinked, Victor?

The praying mantis is fantastic. That last shot of him cracked me up.

Thanks, Nance. I was trying not to laugh as I snapped it! The slightest movement and it would have been out of focus. I was thinking Taxi Driver. Sharon - might the brick warm the area a bit?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Sure it could, and it is very hot here, has been for awhile, but where did the bulb come from? It looks like it is coming up from the iris, and the iris were brought from Bardstown about 5 or 6 years ago....also B'town is more north than I am.

This is a mystery. But a nice one.
Thanks.

What's an Inca to do?!

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

I have 4 bulbs of Peruvian Daffodils that I have now planted for a second year. Still no bloom for me. I lifted them last year in the fall and planted them in a warmer sunnier spot this year. Consider yourself lucky! I think they are an interesting flower and I would love them to bloom for me.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

ngam, you are so right...that is exactly what it is. Where on earth did it come from and how did it get here?? Not a clue.
Thanks.

Squirrils

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Southern squirrels?
migrating north?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Escaping the winter in S. America?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Someone probably had a nice pot of them, a squirrel snagged one and hid his treasure for some late winter snacking. You benefit. One of your neighbors is probably not so thrilled.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Not a one of my neighbors gardens, unless you call putting houseplants out on the front porch in the spring and summer gardening. So it still is a mystery.

Since I posted that first picture, the second bud just bloomed. Goodness. I am being overtaken by a beautiful, great smelling skinny petaled southern alien.

Peruvian squirrel, Victor??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Si!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

But I don't know Spanish.....how will I ever know which squirrel to thank?

That's so amazing, Sharon. How lucky you are!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Candyce. It is pretty amazing. But now I think it might be Hymenocallis caroliniana, which can grow in KY, so it might not be all that amazing after all. On the other hand, since I didn't plant them, and have never ever seen them before....where did they come from? Gotta be that squirrel.

Whatever, I am glad to have them.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Wow, that's kinda neat looking, Sharon.

I used to be afraid of praying mantis when I was little, now it's real funny to see cause my kids are currently into the Bugs Life movie.

Test for Spanish Speaking Squirril.
When you see it call out:
" Hey you get outta my garden "
If the squirril ignores you it must be Spanish because it didn't understand your English , nor did it stop digging!
Fool proof every time!!!!!!

Victor--The piece of Hibiscus that I sent you, this is what the flower will look like...not the greatest pic...my camera is making this look really pink, but the flower is more red than anything else.

ngam--Thanks a bunch! That is what they are. I bought them in 3 1/2" pots last year, and I wintered them over...They started growing, and growing, and growing, and, well, growing. I have never had a perennial get this large before! Now, I have a 10' long strip, about a foot wide in my hot box (still haven't moved them from last year) that is all yellow, but about 7' up or so. Thanks again on the ID of them!

I may have some of them available in the end of Sept/Oct. I'll put an email out there sometime and list what I'm wanting to get rid of...lol. I'm learning to edit more and more now! I bought 10 of those guys/gals, because of the size of their pots, thinking to fill in an area behind a wall...I think I only need about 4 of them now!

Ok, beside being a DL nut, I'm also a Hosta nut. I'm not sure if any of you read the Hosta forum or not...but...here goes...lol.

Stuart Asch is a hosta hybridizer, and I like all of his hosta, he is a member of the FOoSF, I will try and attatch a link somewhere for them...I hope this works: http://www.foosf.com/Site/FOoSF%20Main.html

I have been coveting getting my hands on his intro named 'Double D Cups' for almost this whole season. I contacted him in the Spring, and we emailed back and forth, and I waited, and waited... Well, I never got it in the Spring time. So I contacted him again, and he emailed me back, and sent me a division, along with 2 bonuses that are his intros for this year, and last year, 'Allyha's Grace,' and 'Spring Break.' So I am bubbling at the seams!

double d cups, too funny, wonder how he came up with that name????

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

There was a thread awhile back on interesting hosta names. 'Double D Cups,' you can have a lot of fun with the name 'Striptease' as many people have 'Yellow Polka Dot Bakini,' 'Pole Cat,' 'Risky Business,' 'Cabaret,' 'Kiwi Full Monty,'...etc...I like how hybridizers and growers will take a name and run with it. I wonder what the kids/sports of 'Double D Cups' are going to be named?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Congrats, Thom. Been trying to get my hands on double D cups for years!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

LOL...I wouldn't expect anything else from you Victor...LOL

I think I just had a tear roll down my cheek from laughing :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think my eyes would tear if I actually did get my hands on them!
