taters, that is sea lavender? let me go check! lol!

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

When do you winter sow in the dirt? Can you throw the seeds now? Wont they come up now, and not in the spring? Why don't you have weeds, too? I wouldn't know the difference with some of them! I have to try that! My bf does it all the time!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

yep! found it... I cant believe I remembered the name! lol!
anyhow, its perineal evergreen here... thats why I like it...had to cut it back alot too! still keeps growing in! has had blooms constant since jan too!

The pinkie tall ones look like cosmos, i still see poppies in the back and i believe there is a little buterfly bush at the botton to the right with a purple flower. Wondering here!

This is a close up of a white butterfly one!

Oh my, That is so pretty, can it be grown from seeds, or cuttings??? If you cut it back again, please keep me in mind, I will send you postage.
Linda Kay

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol, we did have weeds. i did lasagna beds to start. put thick layers of wet newspaper down and then piled layers of green/brown on top. then threw down seeds. some weeds did grow in... oh and the MGs?! HUGE weed for me! lolol!
basically, if the bed is filled in, the soil wont see the sun and then seeds wont grow...so I kept pulling weeds before they could set seed... and then flowers grew in and no more weeds :o)
I am sure weeds will be back when the flowers and foilage die off, hope to mulch before then! lol!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

taters.. they grow from seeds...and I would LOVE to know how to collect them! I dont know where the seeds are on them...but several people want them... so if someone knows how to collect and when to do it... I will gladly go collect! I have 6 plants I think 2 are dwarf variety...

clem, yes there are 2 butterfly bushes in the left part... one fuschia color and one purple.
I have id'd some of what is growing in the mixed bed... (I call it Mt Bailey bed~dh dumped mountain of dirt. I threw mixed seeds there to hide it! lol!)
there are hollyhocks, a huge thistle that is now gone! Mgs (also gone now) bachelor buttons, cosmos, calendulas, sun flowers, catmint, assorted popies (red, orange and white) but there is still stuff blooming out there every day! lol!
that was a fun project...cause I never know what is growing til it blooms.. then I have to go do research! I learned there are alot of flowers I love and want more of! so its also been an experimental bed too!

some kind of calendula?

Beautiful garden. Is the tall purple bloom a cosmos? I have 3 acres I could plant so I need really big plants or it looks lost in a sea of green.

Played in the water garden today. It is starting to take off finally. The fish are getting bigger but still have a alge problem. Going to have to build another filter.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Happgarden, 3 acres, wow, you really want me to move over there. properties around NYC, well so small, won't say size. Taxes though on Long Island to the roof, can't hardly live here anymore. Once my girls are out of highschool, i am out of here!

Anjl, just love your place, you are doing a wonderful job, so when do i come over! Clemen

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol, come on over...coffees ready :o)
I just built one of those sun awnings all by my lonesome....well, mostly built! lol! gotta wait for DH to come home to put the legs on it and move it into the sun...so i can have shade!

I need to repot my brugs...today! lol!
Yes happ, tall purples are cosmos... also have pink, purple and orange? not sure if orange are cosmos or not! lol! not as much foilage on orange ones. ....but remember...those are all growing on a 4' tall mountain of dirt...they really only grow 3-4' tall... but on Mt Bailey they are about 7-8' tall! lol!

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm gonna wait till tomorrow to pot Puppy! Still not up to par.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Joyce have you tried barley straw for your pond algae problem? That orange flower does look like calendula.

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Peg that nanna is awesome, love to know if I could grow one here. That will be added to the list of lookups. You had me hysterical with the camera and the weeds. I think we all do it.
Anjl your garden is incredible, love the before and after pics. Less than a year, I think you’re wonder women.
Joyce, 3 acres wow, I’ve got 1 and it’s more than I can handle. Good portion of it is woods too.
Clem, not fair that you get 7a, I can almost see you from here and I’m just about 6b.
Beckey, hope you got to relax all day, that’s my plan for tomorrow. Lucky RI still celebrates VJ day. Nice to have Monday off.
Audrey, Winter sowing it done in containers (mike jugs) outside in the winter.
This is how I spent my day. Pic is of the baby beach in RI. It is on the ocean but jettie off so no waves. Great for small fry, and it’s loaded with them.

Donna, your pic looks just our beaches over here, hope you had a wonderful day with you family!
Hi Louise, your recipes sound so so delicious, keep them coming baby!

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Louise, come and visit any time. Looks tropical now, in February, not so nice. Lots of white stuff here in winter and it gets ccccooooooollllddd by the ocean.
Clem you are only a good distance away by land, by water the miles are less than ½.

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I finally got my new brug potted! Ran out of soil, I'll get some tomorrow, if I feel like it.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Donna,we must be at least 3 hours away! by Car that is!

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I got her potted! Ran out of soil, I'll get more tomorrow!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Here is a pic of brug island. It doesn't really show all the brugs, too many brugs to get in the picture, besides like the earlier email have to be careful that this is the only thing I get in the picture....cropping out all that is not weeded. You should see Versi Peach with her lovely blooms hanging there.

The house is on 3 acres, but we get to mow 17 acres....lucky us. We have a small business so we do have to mow the 17 acres. DH is always hoping for drought! We live in the country and lucky us we don't have the taxes like NY, or we would be homeless LOL.

Donna, I would gladly pay postage for the seeds to the orange Tithona torch.

ohhhh the brug island is spectacular!!!! Just love the tree in the island too!!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Thank you lavender, I love my birch trees. I trimmed some branches off and I have wire tired them to a post and I am going to use them for vines to grow up. Hope it looks ok when I get done.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I just planted a himalayan birch last year, got it on clearance from wally world for 2.00 . They were mulching all the trees, I was only able to save two lol. My yard is too small!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I will have to look up himalayn birch, I don't know what that is. I have this white birch, then a paper bark birch on the otherside of the house and I love that tree. It got torn up in the ice storms last year but it is doing ok.
Then have maples for the color in fall, I know some people don't like them but they are really pretty in the fall. Just planted a tulip tree this spring. The house I grew up in had a huge one next to the house and I loved that tree. Can't wait for it to get big and grow. Wish I were younger I should of planted a big old oak tree.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I have two pin oaks in my back yard. Not fond of them at all. They get iron chlorosis in clay soil and that is what we have lol. Not to mention they don't drop their leaves until spring. hard to keep the flower beds clear in the spring. The himalayan is a white paper bark type. On acreage I love maples, you wouldnt have to worry about the invasive root system. Northern red oak is one of my favorite trees for color too.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Mornin girlies...
well.. I can't remember a thing I read..LOL OH the birches... I LUV them.. but can't grow them here!! Pin oaks?? Got them.. and yeah they keep their leaves all winter too!!
Joyce.. that brug island is soo pretty, and you do have a "few" brugs..huh??..LOL
I have been looking on Ebay for a new/used camera.. BOY there are sooo many to choose from..lol I am sooo confused!! I just want a camera that I can post some pics of my flowers.. dad gum it!! Any one have a camera sitting around they want to sell?? LOL That sure would be a lot easier for me!!
Audrey.. you feeling better??
Donna.. the pic of the ocean is beautiful!!.. Nothing like the Gulf here... all brown and yucky!!
Clemie.. so we have something in common... 5711..LOL You know... I don't think I have ever played the lotto!! And I went to my first casino last summer in CO. I spent 10 bucks sooo fast... I set a limit on 20.. BUT the 10 went soo fast I quit there...I am NOT a risk taker on my money!!..lol

Have a good one girlies!!

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Morning hotties,
Day off and it’s pouring, good cause now I don’t have to spend hours watering.
I have no clue what a pin oak is but don’t think I want any. I have tons of large oaks here, the leaves shed in fall and they don’t deteriorate well. I spend days, mulching with the tractor or blowing them into the woods.
Becky, I’ve been to the gulf coast in TX, Corpus Christy (probably botched the spelling on that). I liked it, but it was very different from the Atlantic, I went in the water to cool off, walked out forever, never got passed my knees and it was really warm like a bath tub. DD was stationed in San Antonio for 4 years but that’s all I got to see of TX. Mostly when she gets leave she wants to come home.
Joyce, love the burg island, and the birch. It’s a beautiful setting.
11 for me can be good luck or bad luck you just never know with 11.
I got a new car years ago, Black SC2, had 11 miles on it. A bunch of us drove to Foxwoods in CT to break it in and I won 100 on 11 black that night. I pocketed it an quit, I don’t go to the casino very often cause I hate to throw money away. The bad luck, well we won’t get into that.
Clem the ferry out of CT would be the fastest, but still around 3 hours I think.
Time to do the laundry and see if I can find the kitchen floor. I know it needs to be washed, I just have to find it first.

(Cathy), MO

Good morning all. Back at work this morning. We got a little rain Sat, just enough to not have to water for a couple of days. But the temps are 10 degrees lower so that helps too!
Have a super day everyone

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Happ, was it a tulip tree or a tulip poplar tree? Both are beautiful trees, but the poplar grows extremely tall It's Tenn. state tree. It has yellow boooms waaay up high, and they're hard to see when the tree gets tall!
Becky, so far I'm feeling MUCH better! I'm playing it be ear, and resting when my body tells me too!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I wish we could get a decent rain. Audrey is that a tupelo in Tenn? My favorite honey in the world is tupelo honey. Yum! Nothing like it!

(Cathy), MO

Is anyone else having problems with some of your brug leafs turning yellow and falling off?

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

cat not more than an occasional one. I am having more trouble from the darn grasshoppers.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I have a few now and then turn yellow, but not that many. I think I may overwater sometimes. Grasshoppers here too...
Audrey, did I miss something? Your not feeling well? Hope your better soon.
Linda Kay

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Louise, I haven't heard that word in years! I really don't know what tupelo is, I can't remember. My brain is dead!!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Well tupelo honey is the honey of the movie Ulee's Gold. http://www.floridatupelohoney.com/index.cfm

Midwest City, OK(Zone 7b)

Good news, okay? First, we got 4 beautiful inches of rain last night, my electricity went out for 12 hours. And, now the electricity is back on but I made a deal to switch days, so I get an extra day off...

Cat, the only leaves I've had turning yellow were on the bottom so I liked JanLynn's idea of doing a standard with them so just removed them. It seems to have helped, I think mine was too much afternoon sun. But the bugs seem to leave them alone better that way.

That brug island is pretty. I'm working on a sitting area between the garage and the shed, with brugs, tropicals and more hostas. I am so tired of doing everything down the sides of my fences, but like we were talking about before, getting DH to get started on getting the leveling and groundwork done in the middle of the yard is frustrating, yeah I know he's one-handed right now, but sheesh!!

No, I have to be fair to him, we have a full 20 foot dropoff to the back of our lot and the ruts are horrendous. It also slopes off 10 feet to each side. So basically, we are on a hill looking down at our back yard. This is not going to be a "honey-do" completely. But as always, plans sometimes have to be changed and we have had to spend the money elsewhere twice now! Oh, well. Keep working! We will get there one day. :)

Audrey, I didn't realize you were feeling bad either. Hope you are feeling better now!

Donna, that beach picture looks so inviting! It's been years since I've seen an ocean, sigh, that's sad!

Sorry I'm so wordy this a.m. I'm headed out during a rain break and see what's going on out there. My plants look so happy with all of this rain. And it's still in the 70s.
Yipppeee!! Peg

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Peg! I go to my dr. Thurs. and he'll give me the lowdown on what I can and can't do! I feel better, but seem to need a lot of sleep! I'm slowly getting my kitchen cleaned up again!
