ET Fall RU 10-11-08 Trade List

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Lorraine, could I get starts or cuttings of your coleuses and lantanas? I have been fairly successful at rooting those. I would also love to have a small hydrangea of each type.

Are you interested in other coleuses? I have 'Olympic Torch,' 'Texas Two Step,' 'Batique Fetish,' 'Alabama Sunset,' 'Haines Heirloom,' and maybe a few more that have survived this hot summer. I'll be sticking cuttings just as soon as we have a slightly cooler day, and I feel sure I will have plants to share by RU time.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

coleuses, can you just take a cutting or do you need part of the root? I have some I would like to spread around and not sure how to do that.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Petrob, I'll get them started. I'll put the names on the coleus, I'm just too lazy to go get them right now. lol
I would love some of yours, I don't have any of the ones you have listed, so just what ever you want me to have.!!!
Beck, could I have Stella dora and an amarrylis?

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Take cuttings. They are the easiest thing in the world to root
When I pinch mine back, I just make sure I'll have 2 "nodes" where the leaf comes out, dip in rooting hormone and stick in dirt. I think they are really easy. Sometimes I just stick the part I want rooted in the dirt beside the big plant and they always root.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

SWEET, I will take some cuttings. Mine are just the run of the mill ones no fancy names that I know of. OH I do have 2 Rose of Sharon's blooming mauve color. I hope they are all not the same color. IF so I will be digging up some to trade. I have 15 or so shrubs.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Lorraine, I'll put you down for one of each coleus.

I just stick coleus cuttings in moist potting soil in a small styrofoam cup with holes punched in the bottom and use a 2-liter coke bottle with the bottom cut off for a dome. I keep them out of direct sun, and a couple of weeks later, they are nicely rooted plants. I root lantanas, salvias, and lots of other plants the same way. Wish I could learn to root roses!

Plants don't have to have fancy names to be enjoyed! Some of my very favorites are nameless.

Beck, my phone is dead. A little rain that we needed and it knocked out the phone. Did you get the list? Are you going to join our little co-op?

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Charlene.. I was wondering if you were still up.. I didn't get back till a lil after 9.. and was afraid it might be too late, after I unloaded the car..etc. to give you a call.. You know I can't resist even though Lyle asked me what was going on...hehe... I went to Lowes for fish emulsion.. and came out of there with an outdoor fern.. 3 gal.!!... and 3 Hibiscus.... LOL he actually came out to help me unload the car.. and said... More plants??.. you are going to kill yourself...hmmm.. well I couldn't help myself.. they were 75% off..

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. When a thing is 75% off she's gotta get it! LOL

Well, if you kill yourself, there will be plenty of flowers for your funeral! If I'm not careful, I'll go about the same time as you go! We can fly to heaven together! Two angels looking downward as we soar! Why downward? At our pretty flowers of course!

Loraine- Since you want 2 of every thing I have :), could I get some of your hydrangeas, each type. Really want the var. one. Also you may want to remember that most big leaf hydrangeas bloom on old growth. This means that they are now making the blooms for next spring. If you cut them to the ground in late fall you are cutting off the blooms. You will see which shoots die over winter and then remove them in early spring.
When I want to root cuttings of these I take 6-8" cuttings, dip in rooting harmone and place in good draining potting soil. Remove most of the leaves. I then put the pots into a container that will hold an inch or so of water so that they will get bottom water for a week or so. This will prevent wilting and assist in the rooting.
Thanks,
DD

Gilmer, TX

Does anybody have seeds to trade? |Thought this might be a good time to get some seeds for winter/spring sowing.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Its official now I WILL BE THERE with bells on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gilmer, TX

Good for you, girl! Looking forward to putting a face with the name.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

YAY TIA... soo glad it has worked out!!

David.. I am soo glad you have brought this up... I am really new to taking cuttings, and I like the idea of the longer cuttings like you take. How much of the 6-8" do you stick in the soil.. and ty for the trick of leaving in the water for a week too!!

Pam.. I have seeds.. I'll try and remember to bring them

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Becky- the water idea will work for things that root in water but not all things. I cut just below a node-where a leaf was growing- and try to get 2 nodes in the soil. About 2 " of it in soil. I like at least a 4" pot or larger depending on the plant and size of the cutting. You can put 18 four inch square pots in a flat. A storage plastic box the size of the flat is ideal. Place flat and all in the box and add water to just cover shallow the bottoms of the pots. For many things you can leave them in this watering box until they are growing and forming roots. This will allow you to add a light MG mix into the water later and get all 18 at once. Hope this helps.
I do have lots of seeds and can get many more. What type things are folks wanting in seeds?
I will be out of town for several days next week but then begin to start doing cuttings. What plants are folks wanting for fall ?
DD

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

DD I am wanting anything that will grow and look nice come Spring since my back yard might be the place of a wedding LMAO...things that can be companion plants with Rose bushes ....LOL

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hello everyone, haveing problems with my ISp, so gott amke this quick, before I get booted off again.
Sorry if there is any confusion about the mequite for trade. Someone ask what we have for native plants here, and I relpied with mesquite. it is all over here, but like most everything else is on someones private ranch, or property.
I don't have cut wood for trade. We always buy our wood in bundles for BBQ. It is $4.00 for a small bundle. I can buy some if you would like, but I just don't have any available to cut down myself.
Linda Kay

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL.. Linda.. thats ok.. on the mesquite.. save your room for plants!!..LOL
