Happy Birthday, PIRL!!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yep, the antibiotics on the mold will cure the plants of what ails them. lol

Wait til I tell DH to keep the grounds separate from the rest for the compost pile. He's usually the one to get to that job first. Maybe I'll just have to beat him to it.

It seems like the grounds that develop the mold are from those "flavored coffees"...maybe I'm wrong.

I have a whole bunch of "mold" forming on top of my mulch pile. My SO says what is that Yuck? I say, it's Mother Nature at work, just ignore it. So he does :)

So funny Jan, my DH is the one to walk out to the compost pile first too. Of course, the compost was my idea, and I always remind him what can go out there, but if it weren't for him actually doing it, I'd have a compost pile in my kitchen.

We used to have a barrel under the sink but it drew fruit flies, especially in summer. Jack found a good compost pail that opens by itself and we have it in the garage. It took the banana skins, grapefruit rinds, etc. all winter long without a problem and by spring it was almost liquid so it went directly into the next compost pile he turned.

One of those empty plastic coffee cans would be ideal for keeping the cooled coffee grounds in for a few days at a time until you can spread or dump them around your plants.

All of our grounds go a few steps from the kitchen to the hosta garden and Sagae (extreme right in this photo) benefits the most all winter long! No weeds either.

I love that hosta garden, Arlene!!!

Beautiful hosta bed!

ditto to what songs said about the hosta garden.

I have a pail (it has a filter so it doesn't smell) that one of my DDIL's gave me for Christmas one year sitting by my sink for the compost stuff. I always have to remind the "family" what is allowed and what isn't. After a big get-together I always find "alien" stuff in there. lol Hey, at least they tried, right? I'll just have to put another one there for the grounds.

Thanks, Christina. It's probably my favorite one since there's no slugs and no weeds because there's hardly any room for weeds to grow.

I have had some mold (not much) on my regular coffee grounds. Pirl - great bed. That's the ultimate weed solution - dense planting! It's what I'm aiming for in all my beds.

I seriously think you need a Sum and Substance hosta in the back left to give it some height, and repeat of yellow:)

Funny, my S & S stays light green, even with ample sun.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Now, mine is quite yellow, even in shade. How odd.

This is my friend's Sum and Substance.

This photo was taken at 6:37 AM on May 24th and it's about as much sun as ever gets to that corner. Most plants do not like that spot back in the corner.

Well, you could try Sum and Substance and take it out if you don't like it there. I know where you can get one.

Another one that would be real pretty there is Dawns Early Light, although that turns greener as summer goes on. But spring and early summer is bright yellow, and it takes a lot of shade. I have a source for that one, too.

I bet you do!

I think I have a S & S. The spot there now has one I received in a trade that's solid green and hasn't yet died. Behind it is Persicaria. It can take the dry shade and doesn't get invasive.

Happy Birthday, Pirl!

I have been very overwhelmed with taking on the terrace while managing my own gardens, but I want you to know that the plants and seeds you sent me last year are thriving!

Hope this is the best birthday ever,

Cheers,
Michaela

I'm glad there are other people who thing Starbucks coffee smells/tastes burned. Disgusting!!! Dunkin's tastes like dishwater. I like my own!!!

And TG I'm not the only one w/ slugs the size of school buses w/ all this rain.

I grew up in a tourist town, too- Gloucester. Just TRY to go about the business of errands, getting to work and school w/ a carload of rubberneckers in front. They're cheap, too, and don't tip. (I tried waiting tables one summer when I was 16). Once, my Dad came across a group picnicking on our lawn!

LOL Arlene! Biking a "country thing"! They drive me NUTS- they ride in the center of the road.

As for dogs, I've been attacked while out walking. I kick them in the chin. Once I did this in full view of a cop- he either didn't notice or didn't care either way- I sent the dog yipping. I'm sure they aren't bad dogs, its the owners who are bad; still, I'm not getting bitten!

Thanks, Seandor. The deer made the birthday less than wonderful.

Jax - we've been to Gloucester many times and it's always in late September and early October. It's never empty!

Spare me the summer people!
