Carnea blooming in the greenhouse this past winter
Morning Glories 2008 #10
Jackie and Jadajoy - Both photos are lovely!!!
Jada - What is the cultivar? Milkyway?
Thanks for starting a new thread, Jackie! :-)
I don't have much in the way of MGs blooming right now. But even though the Kohkan vine is about done, it's still blooming quite a bit. Small leaves, big blooms! I put 2 different blooms together in one picture so to conserve posting space. These were taken this morning.
I do have a question though ... My Kohkan is showing striped variations (is that what you would call it?) on the petals. Is that characteristic of a true Kohkan or could it be a cross? The color seems to be right, unless Kohkan is supposed to be deep red. This is more of a magenta color. Looking at http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/133781/, it seems to match the color of half of the pics. Joseph's photo blooms look more red. I'd like to know more about this cultivar. It is my favorite of any MG I have grown so far. And I do like the variation in blooms. It makes them more unpredictable and interesting to me personally. I think that is why I like the crosses so much, I love unpredictable things! (That must come from my job, because I never used to be that way!)
Joseph - Your Akatsuki no Mai is beautiful! Large blooms?
And the Berry Ice is gorgeous. I would grow it just for it's leaves alone! I agree, definitely one to grow again! :-)
Emma - I wanted to comment on your arbor/trellises made from livestock panels. Very nice idea!!! How wide are each of the panels? Are you positioning them in a criss-cross pattern? How many vines are you growing per arbor/trellis panel? I am curious about the vine weight factor. Great idea!
Deb - Yours are so pretty. They would look great growing on an arbor! Would be beautiful with white climbing roses! :-) I think of wedding flowers when I see your photos!
Emma - Higes are I. purpureas, correct?
Becky . . .
The stock panels come in 52" x 16' and Jerry cuts them in half for a size of 26" x 16' [they could also be cut in 1/3 for a more narrow trellis.
He cuts the bottom cross piece so there is about 5" of wire to shove in the ground to secure them - and they don't go anywhere - at least for me. You can also cut the next cross piece up to set them even farther into the ground. But, 5" works great and supports the weight. These particular two I have set up at two different angels to fit this particular bed. I also set up single trellises in other areas. Also, the neat thing about these trellises is that you can take them down if you don't want them sitting bare over the winter. I grow 3 to 4 vines per side-end of each trellis - usually 3 vines. 2 vines is ideal considering how they really take off after a couple of months.
Emma
That's such a great idea, Emma. So if you grow a few vines at each end of the trellis/arbor ... do the vines meet in the middle at the top? They look awesome!!!!
I am afraid to stick 5" into the ground as the only support (hurricane winds are a concern for me here in Florida), but I am now thinking I could concrete 8' tall 4" X 4" posts into the ground and make an arbor or even a cool tunnel that way. I could cut the fencing to size and could staple or clip it to the wood to secure it. That would certainly be a lot cheaper than wooden or vinyl trellis material! I have seen the fencing spray painted green too! My mind is churning now! LOL! Thanks for reminding me about livestock fencing. So inexpensive compared to the alternatives.
Thanks Becky -
I like this Trellis too.
Yes, the vines meet in the middle.
You can then wrap the vines on down to the other end, or wrap them back down toward the end they are growing.
You can cut the ends so they go farther into the ground. When the trellises are set and bent for the form, they are very secure.
We pay around $18 per stock panel at Tractor Supply which will make two or three individual trellises.
I'll take photos of my fences this week to show you how Jerry built those.
Emma
Thanks Becky and Joseph. Joseph, love no Mai, it's a beauty.
Nice blooms Jada.
Deb, love the soft pink on your hige.
110 heat index here yesterday. No blooms day after day after day.
How disappointing..
Maybe I will have winter blooms.
Some of the buds show color, then they just wont open. Just close up
tighter like they bloomed the day before. Deep sigh here. lol
Gail - I would love seeds from this one: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5328200
I happen to be a fan of pink. :-)
Sometimes during the day they will change. The morning colors and the afternoon colors are often totally different colors. That's the beauty of MGs! :-)
It is kind of a mauve pink rather than a clear pink. I will save all the seeds from that one for you. The tag just says Sunshine Mix. They are yours, my dear friend (LOL)
OK......now I know why the colors are different. I took these pics at noon today and I usually take them early in the morning.
You are so funny, Becky!
Beauties Gail!!!
You're doing great, Gail!
Really nice blooms Gail.
What a nice group of people to the newbies! I am going to save the seed I get plus I also ordered on line and got some new ones.........and then, two nice people from the MG forum sent me seeds. I am rip raring ready to go!
Gail,
This is a type of blizzard...the nature of the blizzards is that they frequently vary the exact color proportion in the pattern...

1st flush can be almost solid, with just a few white streaks to let you know that it is a blizzard

The photos here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/gessiegail_1217186587_853.jpg
show what can happen when the blizzard genes fully kick in...anything from a very dilute streaked to a more solidly colored streaked...
TTY,...
Ron
Oh, thank you, Ron, as I was getting so confused. I am getting excited again. I even found a new bloom from a plant that had not bloomed this morning but I can't remember what I named the file.......so will have to take another in the morning. Although she is a plant in the same pot as the other Sunshine mix one, this is the most gorgeous real true pink .
Nice Jackie on the Drac I'm still waiting on mine!!
Hi Nichole, I have two new blooms today on plants that hadn't bloomed. This is getting exciting to look for them like you did today down on the river.
In case you think I mailed your boxes, WRONG, but i did get some more anti inflammatory meds so maybe tomorrow I will feel like new.......
