The P & L Daily Chat Thread #2 "buck-buckaw!"

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Sherry, no that is not a bantam, but it is by duck eggs so may look small LOL... he is half jersey giant ans half buckeye, both x-large fowl.... he is gradually coloring in with some brown, much preferable to me than black...

i now have two broody hens, a jersey giant and a black australorp, so i am saving eggs. they are sitting on the fake eggs LOL, but in the favorite laying spots...

tf

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

yea you can say that again....... to much fun. HMMMMM soak my eye in Epsom salt???? We did finally play a some what board game called dirty minds, NO kids allowed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was so much fun.

Really good luck on them dogs, I have a sure fire way to get them with out a gun but it is not humane. But that is another story.

Lucky chick you (wanted to say lucky duck but thought chick was more appropriate), to have 2 broody's. My little guys and gals are 22 days old and are already "nesting". The bantams were in there own pen untill friday, they dug under the vinyl and crossed over. So last night we took out one of the panels and let em go back and forth, they ALL love it. The crested that are 22 days old are loving them mobile home steps as a place to roost. One of my crested has a bloody spot on its head, guess I need to get some antibiotic and put on "his" head, why I think "his" is his crest is looking like a flat top????? Is this correct in sexing, boys are flat and girls are puffy.??????? OMG they are staring to get a comb on some of the crested. Is that another sign of boy girl?????

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

a comb by three weeks i would say HE...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

crud oh well they are getting pretty

Gainesville, FL

Tamamra , that duck looks like mine when they were babies.

I want to order a couple pekings . Wwhat I thought I was buying when I got these two .Where is a good place to order ducks ?Plus I need at least 6 more hens .This time I want hens that lay medium size eggs and are very hardy ,any suggestions? We are almost set up now, just a few small jobs. I've been sick and he's disabled so we are a motely crew .

Sorry about your dog problem.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

just last week i got some beautiful laying hen/chicks from Ideal, and this week they are sending me ducklings.... there is a thread here called "more temptation", and towards the bottom you will see where i posted a toll free number, and you talk to Rachel... i got ameracaunas, brown leghorns, black australorps, and buff orps, maybe a few RIR or some other reds... on order i have 35 duckslings coming... some pets, some meat, some layers. i cna't recall which is which on the breeds, some fairy talked me into it last week...

for you i would recommend the brown leghorns, you won't get a hardier, more free ranging egglaying hen than that, and they are pretty too. if you handle them a lot fromt he start they won't be as flighty... they have pekins, you ought to consider the khaki campbells too...

tf

Gainesville, FL

Thanks Tamamra. I will give them a call .

Why do you like the khaki campbells ? Are they friendlier than the pekings ?

We have so much to learn . I had a peking duck when I was a kid,he just walked free as a bird . We had lots of dogs so maybe they protected him from all the wild animals .Of course some nights the dogs would pluck some of his feathers out ,but during the day he was bss and chased them around .He lived with us for years, then we took him to a lake at a zoo so he could be around other ducks, but he was afraid of the water. But liked the other ducks.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

OMG, a duck afraid of the water? Too funny, whatsupdoc, but glad he liked the other ducks.

OK, tf, where is our temptation for the week.

Are you hiding or just not awake yet (saw your post at 3:46a.m.). Let us know if you get any chicken fairy calls.

Sheila

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I am hoping that the bator at ideal poultry breaks down. I have an order placed right now from last weeks phone call. And still have not gotten the main coop done yet. The only way I will say yes is if I get this order in place and next order is all half price.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

HIDING AND NOT ASNWERING HTE PHONE! i oculdn't take anything else if if was free with free shipping.... i am passing the buck, er, baton along to.......... please somebody take this!!!!!!!!

Clarksburg, MO

How will we know if they have any if you do not answer the phone! LOL You are neglecting your official chicken fairy duties! Wouldn't take free chicks with free shipping, you should be banned from DG. LOL Just wondering if anyone had heard from they.

Sheila

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i am not here... YOU NOW HAVE THE BATON! go to the temptation thread, get RAchels' number and call her yourself.... TAG YOU'RE IT!

Gainesville, FL

Ganny he had never been in the water until we threw him in the lake and he acted like he was drowning ! After that he never would go close to the shore . When mom got him he was grown and in a rabbit cage where he had been since a duckling.Very 'nasty' cruel situation .She didn't want a duck but bought him from the two cruel brats who owned him just to save him.

My mom was a self appointed humane society , any mangy animal was rescued and taken to the country . She was a city slicker turned country western Calamity Jane. Moved to middle of woods with us kids and kept a 38 pearl handle Smith & Western by her side.

Tamara why the Khakis ? What are the pros and cons ?

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

anybody have a cough drop for my poor little twitch roo... he woke up this am and I guess he forgot how to crow.. he starts off good.. but then it slows down to a wisper, kind of like he ran out of breath... I have got to record this one.. I couldn't get in the house fast enough.. I was rolling on the ground laughing... poor thing has no ego left!

Gainesville, FL

I like to watch them when they first try to crow .So far I have 3 roos who have just started to crow past couple weeks .I'm now suspecting one of my hens may be a roo . So that means I will have 4 roos and 1 hen . I need to find couple of the roos a home. They fight all the time .They are 11 wk.old bantams .

Lodi, United States

Poor tf--somebody grab her baton before she collapses! The mantel of Chicken Fairy is a heavy one indeed.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Clarksburg, MO

Well I grabbed it, but apparently I don't know how to wave it. Called Rachel and no over hatches this week. Just the week I thought I could take some. OH Well, guess I will just have to dream of baby chickies.

http://www.cacklehatchery.com/khakicampbellpage.html

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

the rouens are the others i plan to keep, look like mallards but don't fly more than 100 feet....

http://www.cacklehatchery.com/rouenpage.html

of course this site lists them as sold out, i am getting mine from ideal in Texas. since they are so far south, shipping to you should be as fast as shipping to me...

their number is in the "more temptation" thread...

Sheila

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

tia, i will take your keets if you are paying for them LOL. i will justn throw the two injured PBR roos our of the henhouse brooder cage... have had lots of requests for keets...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Clarksburg, MO

Clarksburg, MO

THE CHICKEN FAIRY DANCE WORKED (with Tamara's help, I think). Rachel just called. Have to double check with hubby and then call her.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

NO, you check with hubby AFTER you place the order..... remember the cf rule "'tis easier to ask forgiveness than permission"...

Gainesville, FL

Tamamra, I just talked to Rachel and ordered 10 brown leghorn pullets and a pair of peking ducks.

Ask for minimun order of $25.We have started from scratch and it has been exspensive .I told her you recommended her . At first I had to leave a message.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

it was expensive?
