Garden Photos part 24

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, Janice, Will Goodwin is a group 2 clematis. Jo Ann, I'll try to get a full shot. It's tall - over 5 feet. Very nice glad, Nance. Doesn't look like a glad.

Here is my second flower on Primal Scream...what the heck. It's like it has some sort of associative identity disorder...lol.

I had two DL's that to the best of my knowledge are changing ploidy...or whatever it's called when they send out extra petals, one had 2, the other had 1???

Another wth moment from Gilbert H Wild and Sons. I know for a fact I did not purposely order any reds...I have the large red flower I posted earlier, and this smaller one. The larger one is about 6-7", this smaller red is about 4.5-5.5".

The last of the Gilbert 12. I know some people in DL land are gonna scream, but I am not a "true" fan of spiders. I like some spidery types, if they are of the UFO kind, I don't like the spiders that look all wonky, like spaghetti flowers. This came up, and, again, it's red. I guess Gilbert had too many reds and they were like, "WAHOO, PUT SOME IN DA BOX!"

I'm not a spider or double girl so don't feel bad. I own 2? maybe 3 doubles and only one did I buy. The rest were bonus's the one I bought was 'Siloam Double Classic'.....say thing with the spiders.

Victor your Belemcands is over 5 feet tall?
Mine is planted in the wrong place.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, Jo Ann, the blooms are held that high. Thom, is that possible? Tetraploids have twice the number of chromosomes as diploids. I did not think that was changeable.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Getting my DL terminology mixed up. Should have stated polytepal...I believe that is the correct spelling. Has nothing to do with the diploid/tetraploid-y of a DL (that I'm aware of) I'm sure someone out there can correct me on this. The poly's will shoot up extra sets of petals/sepals from time to time. Some DL's are almost 100% poly's, while others aren't nearly that high in percentages. There is a fellow DG'er, DG name is happymoose (I think) who is doing a lot with poly's in his hybridizing efforts. Essentially, a DL has 6 petals (usually 3 sepals, 3 petals), with the polys, if someone is really focusing on their poly's they will double the amount of the petals/sepals, or make a DL that has 8 petals, 10 petals, or 12, with high percentages.

I hope that made sense...lol.

The more ad more I read about hybridizing DL's, the more I lurk in the Hybridizers forum, and the DL forum, the more excited I get about hybridizing my own DL's. Especially when it comes to potential outcomes of ploidiness...converting diploids to tets, see what happens...lol.

I am a true DL dork...lol.

I have 30 of those Peacock Orchids planted along my driveway and the fragrance is just incredible. They've been blooming for a month now and still have more to go. I have to lift them in the fall but I think it's worth it for the fragrance alone.
