Garden Photos part 24

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

This is one of my :-) own crosses again. The cross was done in 2004 and it had a few blooms last year, one real small, couple of them larger.

Now this year it really surpassed it's size completely. We took these pic's this evening, almost forgot ....too much going on.

I don't know what this is, but it has been in bloom for about a month and a half now.

This is as wide as it is long when you stretch out the petals. The plant itself is about 3 ft.

I love the colors of those Morning Glories, Candyce & Sherrie. Great DL's everyone.
Here's Rose of Sharon.

Eglantyne--looks like a giant red bird! Possibly a Phoenix. 'Phoenix Rising' 'Phoenix in Flight' 'Phoenix Flying'...just a thought, I'd sure as heck buy a fan or two, or three...lol.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I was wondering if that giant has shades of purple in it, or if that was just the picture. It's awesome.

Hemhostaholic: In your "old-fashioned collage" what is the ID on that burgundy one in the upper left with the gold edges .... that one is sharp!

WNY--If you are referring to the DL with the Double petals, that's 'Night Embers.'

I'm gonna have to sit down and type out all of the DL names at some point from the collage...lol.

I'm so happy with my DL's this year, I am almost at the triple digit mark...almost. I think I'm just a couple bids away...lol. Or a few orders from Keith Miner and MJ Meadows away!

You need to do a chart, Thom, showing the ID of each one in that shot. I like your method better than photo collages! Better image and less distracting without all the squares.

Hemhostaholic,
I am giggling about the names..great ones,so far I only made tags with my husbands, our childrens and my name on it but I did not name them per say....will try to come up with some names though, just haven't given it much thought yet.

BTW
There must be a DG glitch because none of the pictures are showing up.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

What's going on? I can't see any images that were posted today!!!! Is it my computer or DG or are the images really there and I've gone completely crazy. Eleanor

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

There has been a "minor glitch" goin on the past couple hours .... There was a post by Dave somewhere that he is on it.

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

I'm having the same problem, so maybe it's DG. I reload and I can see them and then poof there're gone

I crossed with ya, Thanks Willy

Night Embers is awesome!

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

The board was down briefly for me, but I can see all the pics.

Victor, I will let you know if I figure out the ID. I think the pic captures the color well, but it was taken in the shade, and you know things can look richer there sometimes....also not sure if it's one of those DLs that fades a bit in the sun (mine are all in more shade than they probably ought to be, but it's all I have).

The pink ones in the foreground of this pic are Pink Damask, which is a more dusty, warm pink...this pic shows the color accurately. My NOIDs are a shade or two punchier in color than Pink Damask, and a cooler shade of pink. Pink Damask looks a little drab next to them now. Both are about the same height.

Noreaster.....why I thought it might be 'Cherry Cheeks' is because this is mine....reminded me of yours.

Oops - guess the glitch continues.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Pixie, if it's not that one, it's a dead ringer for it. The only thing is that I don't remember buying any by that name, and it seems taller than the height that was listed when I looked up Cherry Cheeks...but maybe height is not an exact thing, like hosta size. It certainly looks a lot like that one. Interestingly, look at the pics in Plantfiles for Cherry Cheeks....the pics all look like different DLs!

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/11417/

BTW, some of you guys look like you have tons of DLs- do you actually dead head them all?? I'd like to have more, but dead heading is such a chore, so I guess I'm at about my limit.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Mine is really tall and lanky too. I have it in full sun so it's not for the lack of it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ugh - lost my post. I think they look alike also. PF pics are often all over the place - especially, it seems, with DL's. Different cameras, lighting and the flowers do look different from place to place. They even look different from year to year in my garden - by a bit. I don't think deadheading will help the blooms. I doubt it will send up more scapes at that point.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I don't deadhead to get more blooms- I also think you've got a fixed number of blooms when the scapes come up and that's it. I deadhead because seeing yesterday's spent blooms hanging there makes me nuts!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I do it when I walk by. I certainly do it if I'm taking a pic.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

It depends. Some of the clumps that I have, especially 'Black Eyed Stella' and 'Stella D'Oro', if I were to spend the time dead heading them, I would be at it for hours. If I'm crossing DL's in the hopes of one of them setting pods I do not dead head. As a general rule, with pushing almost 100 DL cultivars, especially not at peak DL bloom time, it's too much time to dead head them all. Some of the DL's that I have, like 'Buttered Popcorn' send up scapes that have excellent bud counts on them, huge bud counts this far North is not common in DL's, and they bloom in groups of 10-12, so every day, I would have to dead head about a dozen or so spent DL blooms, and that is from just one DL!

It doesn't hurt the plant, it doesn't increase anything, the only reason to dead head is pure aesthetics. IMHO. Unless you are trying to make a cross, dead head away...if you want to spend the time doing that...lol.

MJ Meadows list is growing...I keep peeking at the DL forum, and there are some peeps over there that are huge MJ fans...for those not in the know...MJ Meadows is the hybridizer that has created a "line" of DL's, they all start out with 'Westbourne's.....' I have 2 of hers and my list is now up to about 10...lol.

flowerjen, me too, but the tag and entry in my journal don't match. I think it was from Hill Garden in Maine called TBW "(M) 36" 7" Unk. Stunning large bright red w/gold throat" . So no id for now. Plus I can't find another picture of it to compare. Sorry.

Eglantyne, wonderful cross. I love it when a Hybridizer uses a common thread in naming their crosses. Did you chose your DG name for the famous woman E. Jebb who worked to help orphans?

Here is 'Firestar' from buggycrazy ( love her bulbs) and 'Halloween' which is one from the Tango Lily series. Patti
