Today's Weather in Your Garden - 25
Patti, our refrigerator is making ungodly noises. Wonder if it's something to do with that refrigerator god's moon that you posted. That's the one for this month, right? Anyway we had ordered a new refrigerator a while ago that's arriving Sat-just in the nick of time. We hoped to use the noisy one for an extra, but at this rate, with refrigerators dropping like flies all over the state, I doubt it will make it....
I had an old fridge that made groaning noises, we vacuumed underneath it to get the pet hairs away from the motor and it went on for a few more years.
Temp 76.6°, Wind W 0.3, Rh 58%, Baro 29.85↓. ☺
Cloudless, hazy skies.
We have a bad air day today...advisories being sent out to stay inside if possible if you have asthma or a breathing condition. Folks should not mow or do any strenuous exercise. Heck we can't mow....it will kill the lawn completely!! It's already turning brown from lack of water, my lily blooms are small compared to most years.
This is my lawn and the neighbors lawn...going, going, brown!!
2nd day of high ozone and bad air
Partly cloudy, 80ºF (feels like 82º)
Wind: 12 mph, direction WSW
Pressure: 30.03 in, steady
Humidity: 67%, Dew point: 68ºF
Visibility: 6.0 mi, UV-index: 1, Low
Measured: Jul/18/08, 08:45
Got the liquid Fence sprayed early and planted three Hydrangea PeeWee, I'm in for the day
Way more hazy and humid today. About 80 .
Went into garden to pick beans, cukes, & squash--the sun was already too hot! The tomatoes have gotten huge, but peppers & eggplants remain tiny. DavidPaul, I don't know the name of the aster, but the flowers are eensy & white, & cover the plant---it reseeds, very invasive. I hated to hear refridge stories---last week my 3yr. old GD HayHay said "Nana--you have a very noisy kitchen!" I then realized it was the fridge we obviously have gotten used to--wish we had the cash to replace. Must turn on the A/C today---very humid already.
Ohh boy have I got a job! Four baby mockingbirds just fell out of their nest on my front lawn, in the hot sun. If I can go to the pet shop, pick up some nesting material, put it in a rope nest that I bought (which no bird used) and put the babies & the nest next to the one which collapsed then maybe the parents will see them and feed them! They are way too young they dont even have all their feathers! I just don't like the thought of being attacked by mockingbirds as I try to do a good deed! - Thats it!! next year I'm putting up the NO Vacancy sign!! ... off to the pet shop.
Wow - good luck, WC. You're a good guy!
Why did you do that,
Now I'll worry all day.
Guess I didn't state that right.
I felt helpless from here.
Glad to see you are posting pictures of your progress, looks like the new nest will work.

I hope there is a good outcome from this story WC. At least you know that you gave it your best shot.
Hot as you know here today. Already 80 degrees and climbing fast. More humid too. At least there is a nice little breeze. Need rain a lot, maybe Sunday.
Same here - need rain. Hoping for the best with the littles birds!
Ok, back from the shop. Filled up the new nest with nesting material, looped a dark colored monofilament line thru the top ring, set the new nest next to the chicks. She's still feeding them and not attacking me, though she watches me intensely. Next step is to let her continue to feed them for awhile and get used to associating the nest with her chicks... then raise up the nest next to the old nest with the chicks, - it should work.
Because I don't want to pick up 4 dead dried up birds from my garden tomorrow Ge1838. I guess its the same reason we try to save beached whales & dolphins and sometimes they save us...
- Because in the final analysis we are all here to help each other. ☺
Temp 89.2°
Your nest is perfect.
Looks like it's a save for those babies.
Well said WC!!
Currently 79 and no rain here either, but Sunday could be our lucky day. One weather site reported that we should have showers this morning. NOT. I won't be trusting them anymore. Here is a random visitor that appeared on some allium heads that I am saving seeds from. He didn't like me much.
WaterCan2 Poor birdies, best of luck in saving them. You can only try.
Refrigerator gods are not being kind to us. Part still not here. Enjoy your new one Boojum, but I know you would have rather bought iris and orchids. Patti
Is that spider carrying eggs on its legs ?
Or are we seeing a parasite on the host?
Great job, WC! Thanks. Jo Ann - I did get what you meant the first time.
Very cool pics. Of all the varieties of spiders only DLL spiders don't make me go ewwww. The rest are too creepy crawly.
Fantastic picture.
That is really creepy.I saw a Earth special this spring, where Ants that have a fungus or bacterial disease are removed from the colony and are left to die.
The film went on to show the fungus growing out of the Ants head into a long orange thread that eventually engulfed the ant.
I'm sure many DGers saw it.
WHOOO ray
Wow! This is some much fun to witness! Thanks WC.
Great work. Will you move the nests?
Yes, (you read my mind), I wedged the basket & the nest in the trunk of the tree. The female just came back while I was in the middle of this post and looked for the nest on the ground. She couldn't find them at first then after what seemed to be minutes she looked up and hopped into the basket to feed the young! There is a 20lb test fishing string securely attached to the top of the nest to haul it up the final stages. For now I want her to get used to finding them in the tree with the new nest. - (boy this is a lot of work! lol! ) ☺
Great Job WC.
Bet your glad you don't have to feed them every few minutes.Look at those hungry mouths.
Who was rescuing House Wrens earlier this spring.
I wonder how that went.
Very nice, WC. The Bird Man of LI!!
Temp 92.8 Rh 39%. ☺
- What a day to fall out of a nest! Well they're 4 ft off the ground now and mama thinks she got a nest with a deck! The basket will have to be incorporated as part of the nest (she's got a lot of kids!). Going to have to keep the nest on it's side, secure it to the basket & open the nest up from the top some, she doesn't like an enclosed nest. Sun is beating down and she keeps them in the shade while she sits on the basket edge standing guard.
- At least half the battle is won so far...
Wow! This is really interesting - the whole process is quite involved and your pictures are great, WC! Maybe you could start a new thread dedicated to your 'project' and your new family! - Lynn
I'll only put up 2 more pics then I'm outta here! lol! Since the thread is quite long already hopefully Victor will start a new weather thread (W/O the birds), and I'll post the conclusion on this topic on this thread by day's end. believe me I don't want to drag this out either! lol! ☺
Okay - I'll start a new one.
Okay - here's the new one:
