I agree, Lynn. It's so sad to lose so many so young.

Did anyone watch last night's NASCAR race and see that glorious sunset? It was awesome! Even the cameramen, who were supposed to be filming the race, were getting shots of the sunset instead!
Sorry about the loss, Lynn. Hopefully, the local people will continue their support for the family. All the more tragic when kids lose a parent.

Finally we got some sun today - yesterday was sort of blah but this morning was gorgeous - we got so much done -
- mowed the lawn
- a bit of weeding
- cleaned out both vehicles - washed inside and out...
I am pooped now and ready for a nap which is ok cause now the clouds are starting to come in LOL
Send some of that rain down here!!!
It was another top 10 day today--2 this month! The breeze is still blowing, high 70's ---glorious! Sherri---I don't think you would like FL all year---after 3 months, my heart and soul longed for the green CT hills---of course they were snowy then, but when we got back to CT in April, I lowered the car's windows & sucked in the fresh air---got off of I-84 several exits early, so I could drive by the stone walls, fields & old colonials of Southbury & Woodbury---FL is flat--scrubby--the ocean is nice, the sun is nice, but my home is New England.
Robin - Even as a Florida native, I know just how you feel about New England. I can only be away from its beauty for a few months and then I'm ready to come home. I do love Fla. in the winter and I love the River and the Gulf and the white sand, but it's hard to beat this New England lush beauty!! The people are pretty ok too. LOL
Didn't we just have a thread removed over a not so different conversation? lol. I did not grow up in flat, scrubby, hot Fl. I grew up on Miami Beach with rabbits, wild sea oats and dunes on the beach. I could swim before I could walk as parents were dillegent about waterproofing babies. There were beautiful ocean breezes on the east coast before more recent condo development. We fished the beach piers on teenage dates, went scuba diving all over the Keys and sailed in Biscayne Bay on weekends when not water skiing. I grew up with both a single handed sailboat and a canoe in the back yard. Still take out my old canoe when visiting home. Since we could drive at fourteen during those days we could really roam the state if we had wheels. I used to go surfing with GFs at fifteen halfway up the coast and beach camp all over the place. Life was safe and the folks, now known as parental units, were not overly worried. Florida was indeed a playground. The people were wonderful too. I'll concede here. They, including my entire family, are all N.E. transplants. Got me there. :)
Temperature 68 (and falling) in the foothills of Appalchia. The rain has hit hard and heavy all week after a June drought. Over five inches now. Beans are getting new leaves and flowers, tomatoes are setting like crazy, cabbages are needing to be cut. Need to start thinking about the Fall garden.
Laurel
Sure could use some rain here, had to water again today. Hoping for some showers tomorrow. Nice sunny hot day today. Currently 70 degrees.
With any luck, the rain will be here some time tonight. I can live without the severe weather, but it's been a long time since our last good rain. I'm already tired of dragging the hose and watering can!
I was born In MA and spent most of my life in NYS. I loved reading your account, Laurel, and think my hubby could appreciate what you said - he grew up in Coral Gables in the 50s and very early 60s. Things were much different then, as they were when I was growing up in upstate NY (and there is a good decade between us). The kids today don't have the luxury of the more relaxed way of life we had back then.
I have to say there is nothing to compare with NY/New England.
Laurel - I concede too....you touched on some great memories of my childhood and teenage years in Florida...every Sunday spent on the beach with my pals, and I, too, had a canoe that I explored lots of mangrove areas in the gulf with. From the age of 5, I was down at the River at daybreak with my little tackle box, and my parents didn't even worry about us being there "alone". We could all swim and our neighborhood was a super place to grow up. We now spend our winters in the same neighborhood, and people still look out for each other there. So....touche! I wouldn't change a thing about my childhood there!!
70 and lovely here tonight too! I love these cool, breezy nights and warm, bright days. I thought today was going to be muggy......but it was really nice.
Being born, breed, and have never lived anywhere else....Maine is my home.
I love the 4 seasons, how the Mountains meet the Ocean. I love the vast amounts of wildlife amd fresh water ponds and lakes. My heart still flutters when I see the eagle soar over China Lake. I love listening to the loons serenade the moon and I still get goose bumps when the coyotes howl at night.
But every Feb. I want to run to Florida and get homesick for Maine! LOL This only started to occur after I hit 45 mind you.
Lynn, I've got four cousins from Gables High with a spread of years during that time.
DD went snorkeling in Key Largo at John Pennekamp Park this week. I used to teach swimming, scuba/snorkel, and surfing. Pennekamp was a favorite place to bring students to dive and snorkel before the coral reefs became endangered. We went up the coast for surfing unless a hurricane was around the corner. The west coast was like the American west...wild, unsettled and full of strange beasts (mosquitoes). Now that they have drained off the Everglades for development the west coast is "civilized". I just remember the whole state being a stomping ground for us mid-teens until Ted Bundy arrived at FSU.
L
It sounds so beautiful Celeste. I have had some unique experiences, but not loons on the lake. Perhaps some day. I have heard it is special. Guess that's why people travel and do house trades. Perhaps the tie that binds some of us gardeners is that we have a love (lust?) for the outdoor spaces we inhabit?
Laurel
Gee, Laurel - my husband's friends had some dealings with Pennekamp! And I have read all about Bundy - have you ever read the book by Ann Rule called 'The Stranger Beside Me'? This is a must -read.
I feel for kids today. Their memories won't be quite like ours, so we owe it to them to tell it like it was. I used to love the stories my grandmother would tell of being a young girl in the 1920s. Things and weather were so different! - Lynn
I'm forever grateful to my parents and those safer times. Friends and parents from NY were shocked at the freedom and free wheeling ways we were raised in S. FL. We were hedonists and sensualists raised by existentialists. It all worked out just fine.
Laurel
"We were hedonists and sensualists raised by existentialists. It all worked out just fine."
Now we are called "Rents"
Sorry, thought this was the weather thread...
Was a much nicer day than forecast. Beautiful breeze all day. 71 now. Supposed to rain, but I'll believe it...
Temp 75.3°, Rh 60%. ☺
NYC born and bred, been halfway around the world, but I gotta have my 'return ticket'!
Heavy clouds heading Northward just east of me from the ocean, baro still dropping @ 29.61↓
Sorry if your sorry. Will try to stay out or on track.
L
Sorry for wandering! 75 here and maybe we'll catch a bit of the rain heading in a northeasterly direction. We sure could use it. I'm tired of dragging the hose and watering the hanging plants a couple of times a day. Maybe this cold front will give us a break for a few days?
I don't think we ever started a thread that stayed on track.
Great breeze here today which was helpful as we had to dig plants.
finally .... it's raining.... it's been a long time since we had a good rain
Soft rain-I forgot there was anything but downpours!
Ahhh ...
and we are experiencing a light rain as well, Allison. I was going to go outside and walk some of my new plant seedlings down to where they will be planted, but I would be slipping on the grass. So, that task will have to wait until later.
Currently: 68° and rain clouds
Wind: S at 5
Humidity: 94%
