Remember "Marezedotes and doezedotes, and little lambzedivey, akideleativytoo, wouldn't you?"
That's not spelled right, but I don't think I've ever seen it written before.
Remember--"Send Me the pillow that you dream on"
When I was a kid, I had to listen to what my daddy listened to. He also taught us really old songs that people nowadays never heard of. My grand mother did, too. "Little Rosewood Casket", "Barbara Allen" "Wildwood Flower", "Corina, Corina", "Old Oaken Bucket", and Sweet Fern". Oh, the memories, sitting under the big shade tree in the hot summer day, singing and playing the guitar. With Daddy joining in on the fiddle. THOSE were the good ole' days!
Water Cooler - 8
Doe, while it may sound a little "jumbled and jivey" it's mares eat oats and does eat oat and little lambs eat ivy. A kid will eat ivy too wouldn't you?
Doe, do you eat oats?
I know what it is, I just wrote how you pronounce it! Not I don't eat oats! UGH!! Only in cookies! And they're NOT my favorite!
Oh, they're MY favorite!
My grandmother used to sing this
"There's a possum in the woodpile ,honey
"Dont you believe it"(CORUS)
If we catch him we can make some money
"Don't you believe it"
I can smell that possum fryin in the pan
"Don't you believe it"
With sweet potattas and raspberry jam.
"Don't you believe it"
we loved to sing with her when we were little kids.
My children learned the song too.
That is the first song on this thread I have no idea how it goes!
That one stumped me, too, Carrie.
How could we not mention Dean Martin.... now there's a voice!
Celeste, I am locking my chapstick away if I ever have grandchildren!
OH yes "Joy to the World" and not the Christmas carol.
I will forever remember the chapstick story. TOO FUNNY
My dad used to hum/sing a lullaby to us, then our kids, etc. I don't know if it has a name.
Too ---ra-loo----ra-loo---ra Too---ra-loo---ra-lie Too---ra-loo---ra-loo---ra Honey don't you cry
I don't know if there were anymore words or sounds. He just repeated it over and over. It was very soothing. My kids loved it
Never heard the possum one before.
Oh, I loved Dean's voice.
Jan, 'Irish Lullaby'?
It IS Irish, and I've heard it, too, but I can't remember the rest of it! A beautiful song. Does anyone remember "Old Blue"? About a coon hound!
Skidamarink
Traditional

Skidamarink a dink a dink,
Skidamarink a doo,
I love you.
Skidamarink a dink a dink,
Skidamarink a doo,
I love you.
I love you in the morning
And in the afternoon,
I love you in the evening
And underneath the moon;
Oh, Skidamarink a dink a dink,
Skidamarink a doo,
I love you!
Thought I'd catch up on several day's of threads while waiting for my homemade pizza dough to rise. I got so distracted, and tickled by this thread that it went up, out and over the bowl! Just finished taming it back into the bowl. In the meantime, I'd like to recommend Lip Smackers. They come in a wide variety of fruit flavors. As we all know a cat can't keep its butt out of an owner's face. If you smell passion fruit, watermelon, or kiwi coming from the rear of your feline...well you know what to do.
I've never recovered from the trauma of having a ticket to a Beatles concert and getting mono. Talk about inconsolable!
Laurel
Oh Luarel.... I don't think I would of gotten over it either! I'm so sorry!!
How awful!!!!!!

SKIDAMERINK? You couldn't possibly be as old as I am.
Remember it from Kindergarten. LOL
Jo Ann
So mares eat oats but Doe doesn't? ;^)
Sorry for over explaining. As a child, when that song was on AM radio, learning the real words was a huge cosmic mystery solved.
OK! I finally got it!! Never have liked oats! Can you say, slimy?
We are just toooooooo funny!
I am cracking up over all these comments, and the dough rising up and out of the bowl.
I was an adult when I found out that that ditty had REAL words.
You could make a video and put it on YOUTUBE - "The pizza dough that ate the kitchen. "
I too am ROTFL . You know people are going to think we are all weird when we are in a store and start cracking up in front of the Chapstick or Lip Smackers. Whew, I have to take a breath!!! If I can. Thankfully the AC is still working. It is definitely the "DOG DAYS".
Supposed to get to 100 tomorrow. That's HOT for here!
Ooh, Doe, that is hot for you! My brother lives over in Murphreesboro.
My mom used to sing this one when I was a kid,
"I'm a little petunia in an onion patch.
I cry and cry all day."
That's a new wrinkle on my horn!
My Mom loved the Kingston trio, Eartha Kitt, and Maria Callas. She was eclectic. She would have given up a lot in life before that "modern", mahogany cabinet Magnovox. It was waxed regular as guts on greens.

I used to sing Skidamarink to my kids.
Irish lullaby:

It's not a great version - it's a traditional song, but Bing Crosby made it famous in the states in the 50s, I guess.
Thanks - carrie- that's it, however my dad never sang the words only the chorus. It was amazing the effect it had on kids. His voice was deep and gentle, and he was very calm. It made the kids stop crying or go to sleep real quick.
I had never heard of Skidamarink before this thread.
Doe, are you anywhere near Surgoinsville? That's where my mom was born.
Don't stop with that version, Perry Como sings it while holding a baby!
I think Surgeonsbille is in East Tn. That's a whole state from me!! I'm on the West end!
We have sung 'Skidamarink' to all of the kiddos and now to the grands. Little Miss "M" is just now beginning to chime in on the 'I love you' part. She will be two in two weeks, and she's a regular handful! Music slows her down.
Laurel - I love Eartha Kitt. I only discovered her about 5 years ago. I read up on her and she has had an incredible life. Very inspiring.
Jan - You dad sounds like a wonderful, gentle soul. How luck you are!
Candyce - It must be the cutest thing to hear Miss "M' sing to that song. What is that saying about music soothing the savage beast? Soothes more than that, huh?
Doe - crank up that a/c! Do cheerios count as oats?
Littl Miss "M" should meet Luke. He turned 2 in May and he too is ornery. (but aren't they the cutest) You have to suppress a grin while disciplining. He is "Mister Personality". So glad he and his sibs live around the corner. The other "grands" don't live close. We try to get to Oregon at least once a year to see some. The others don't live too far down in Annapolis, MD about 2 hrs.
My Dad was the best. He never knew a stranger. Too bad his youngest 11 GGK didn't get to know him or hear him sing that lullaby.
Actually, Nance, I think little kids can absolutely be savage beasts!
Yes, cheerios ARE oats! That would be the only kind I would eat!
Doe eats oats!
Sometimes!! ^_^
Anyone named Mary who goes by Mar? I get called Car or Care a lot. I eat oats, but that doesn't sound right. If we had a Mar it could be Mare eats oats and Doe eats oats. . . . Maybe Marilyn should step forward. Maybe I should shut up.
