I used to know a lot of Hank Williams SR. stuff! Lots of country. My sister and I sang every time we left the house, going to the school bus, walking in the woods, sitting in the yard. We had all day music fests with our Daddy. People would come over and join in playing and singing. Daddy played fiddle and guitar and I played guitar. Sometimes we'd sing a trio! Music is a magnet!
I've learned to like groups like The Eagles since my kids grew up. I got to know KISS from TV., and others, too.
Water Cooler - 8
That sounds like some special memories, Doe!
You talk about oldies?
A LONG time ago when I was 18 years old and in the Navy, I was stationed on the USS Providence.
This was a cruiser and we were stationed in and around Vietnam.
I bunked in a section that contained the radiomen. They were in charge of the ship's radio station.
It was an internal system and different guys were the disc jockeys.
Well one day I was asked if I would like to be a DJ on the radio.
WOULD I! I had dreams of American Bandstand, and thoughts of being the next Dick Clarke.
"You bet", I said. OK, I was told, your our new COUNTRY DJ.
What does a teenager from Massachusetts know about country music?
I didn't know the name of one single country singer.
I couldn"t back out so I became, (UGH) "the yankee cowboy."
So I played country western songs.
Oh yes, I remember like it was yesterday, songs that would live in your mind and heart for ever.....
Foot stompers like,
I dreamt I went to Hillbilly heaven.
I wouldn't take her to a dog fight, even if she had a chance to win.
Give me forty acres and I turn this rig around.
I don't wanta play house.
My wallet is empty but my heart is full.
Boy did I ever take the razing from everybody south of New York City over this job.
But the way, I can still sing all of them!
Chuck
Are those real songs? They sound like the kind of things my husband makes up!
Doe, my childhood was a little like that, except I was the one teaching everyone the songs and playing the guitar. Then I went legit, and got two useless degrees in classical music.
Yes they are!
There might be somebody out there old enough to remember some of them.
Besides, I didn't know a good C&W song from a bad one.
The dumber they were the more I played them.

Oh, NO, Chuck! I actually remember a couple of those.....When I was a teenager in south Florida, we'd be cruising around being teenagers on a Saturday night, and the best radio reception came from Nashville.....all Country songs! My favorite was Patsy Cline.
Louise, Patsy Cline is still making limited appearances. She only does a couple of songs...she can't stay awake much longer then that!
Update, I was wrong she is in Hillybilly heaven
A bell tower has been erected in her memory at the Shenandoah Memorial Park, where Patsy Cline is interred.
Several Highways, including the Patsy Cline Memorial Highway, Route 522, and Patsy Cline Boulevard in Winchester, have been named to commemorate her life.

Huh? Patsy Cline died in the sixties. If she's still singing to you let us know!
BTW, we now have K.D. Lang who does some great old Patsy Cline tunes.
Like I said, what do I know about country western music?
I guess this means I'm not going to have that date she promised either.
I heard a duet that KD did with Tony Bennett. She has really got a good voice.
When I was a little girl both sets of DGParents had camps at 2 different lakes. Both were 20-30 minutes away from our house. I loved hearing my Dad whistle or sing but I would have to endure listening to "his" music. I still know some of the words and can hum along pretty well to:
Down by the Old Mill Stream
My Way
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
Sentimental Journey
Swinging on a Star
A Bushel and a Peck
The Tennesse Waltz
Unforgettable
Heart and Soul
BTW....those are 40's & 50's Dawn... so don't even try to go there little one!! LOL
Well, I don't know much country either. Miami Beach was hardly the country western capitol of the south. It was inhabited by post WW II GIs who were getting government perks for housing and business development. I only knew Bronx and European accents 'til I was a teenager.
Still, no matter what your music style, Patsy Cline was a talented musical voice.
Ahh yes Celeste, those tunes spinning on the old Magnavox console. Mom was dusting and belting out "My Way". Now, post-lib., something seems terribly wrong with that.
L
Pixie,
I can sing all of them too.
Maybe I do deserve the senior menu at Denny's.
Chuck
I remember those! All we had was a battery radio, and I didn't have a choice of what to listen to, but I heard them anyway!
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, wasn't that the Andrew Sisters?
I sang "Bushel and a Peck" to my then 4 yr. old grandson, he waited till I was completely through, then sanf the Barney song back at me! This was about12 years ago! I'm familiar with all of those!
LOL Laurel...Secretly I think thats why she liked that song.
Boogie is by the Andrew Sisters.
I'm 48 but have 6 older brothers and my parents were 40 when I was born...hence knowing all these oldies.
There's a Patsy Cline shrine/memorial at the scene of her plane crash in Camden, Tn. I've been there seeral times. It's 100+ miles from me, but I used to live in Camden.
Honey, I lived it! I remember the WAR! I had grown kids, almost, during the Viet Nam War.
Bless you. That was a terrible time.
Yes, it was. If you didn't grow your own food, you might go hungry. We grew most of ours, and gathered wild berries and plums etc. for jams and jellies. They canned everything from greenbeans to sausage, we didn't even have electricity at that time. When we could find it, we bought flour, meal and sugar by the barrel, there were 6 of us. We got honey from bee trees. My granddaddy could spot a bee in midair, and follow it to its tree, then we'd go back and cut it down and harvest the honey. Really good with homemade biscuits and homemade butter. We smoked our own hogs, and rendered our lard. We used all of the hogs except the chitlin's and the "lights", whatever that is!
AAAAh the good ole' days!
Chuck, No wonder we get along, basically my entire family was in the Navy.
Wow Doe, that is fascinating.
Chuck, I think the "western" has been dropped from country music. I missed the memo too, but I'm pretty sure.
Hank Williams and Patsy Cline are gems even to this NE guy not really into country.
When I was married to my husband, and we were stationed in Germany, I was part of a country band that traveled the military base 'circuit'. I had a wonderful time, singing Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette and Tanya Tucker ... although Tanya was a bit 'newer' at that time.
Candyce the country crooner! COOL!
Love Patsy Kline"Sweeeeeeeet Mamaries of Youuuuuu"
I know all those too, Celeste. Every word. I also had the older sibling educating me and my mom was a huge music fan. My sister and I used to sing while we did the dishes.
Funny how our brains keep this kind of information, but we forget names and appointments.
My favorite is "Crazy". I really like Norah Jones' cover of Hank Williams "Cold,Cold Heart"
Back to R&R
The duos: Peter & Gordon. Chad and Jeremy and the ultimate, Simon & Garfunkle
