Candee, yes, my iseme is in the ground, in my white planter. They overwinter in place without any problems in my zone. I have two bunches, but only get around 2-3 blooms each. Will post on the yard to vase thread when there is enough blooms to get a bouquet :). Enjoyed your longwood photos. I did not take many photos the last time I visited there two years ago. but, they had a swing band playing there and I was able to finally dance during that vacation.
The FLOWERPOT Cafe' XI
So glad to hear you got to kick up your heels at the gardens. Glad you enjoyed the thread and hope you got to see something you didn't before. I would like to visit at the holidays some time, we shall see.
Wouldn't it be great if we could plan a trip to Longwood and all meet there? I really enjoyed your pictures. I am going with my sister in law on a bus trip with retired teachers on 9/11. I've never been so am really looking forward to it.
Hi everyone.
I want to go to Longwood! not fair. LoL! Thanks for the link Candee.
They are beautiful flowers Mittsy, lovely just arranged on their own in those nice glasses.
I'll put them on our tables for two! Thank you.
Wouldn't it be nice to have all 25 tables with a single flower this week? I'm sure between us we could manage it!
It could be a silk flower.
Candee, good idea of yours, I sneaked in the back door! Has Sue been to feed the dogs yet?
Hope you are all having a nice weekend.
Hi all, Dogs are fed, and also very sweet. They would never bite you and in fact, would lick you to death! (not a nice way to go, and probly very slow)
Nice flowers you lot, and Candee, Longwood looks sensational! I loved the platter lilies and the orchid displays and of course the broms all over the doorframes, oh, and the cactus and the vege gardens. Great pics, and I'm with Terri, I want to go too!
I bought a new (old) cabinet on the weekend, and it's the perfect place to put a vase of flowers. I picked these up at the supermarket for $5. A gerbera, some 'mums, Asiatic lilies and what looks like a native branch with small leaves and dry white tiny flowers?
Sue that is one handsome cabinet you have lent us. I did notice the arrangement over to the right, what is that and how neat it is! The vase display is quite colorful and looks great on the cabinet.
So glad everyone enjoyed the Longwood tour. Sue, I knew you would love those broms. I just posted an idea for you for your garden rooms, using that idea of a wall or door.
Terri, we shall let you pick the date for the Longwood tour, I can make you a reservation at the Brandywine Hotel, that is where we stayed just 4 mi. from the gardens. Try to pick a weekend when they do the fireworks and then we can all meet there!
Oh mittsy, you have water lilies, you lucky thing. I just love water lilies and lotus. I bought a lotus once years ago and tried it out in the pond at the cabin and I thought I was really following all the steps, but I guess it decided not to thrive. I love the presentation in those glasses, really sets them off. So you have a trip planned, be sure to take photos of what is in bloom in September! Can't wait to see.
I have so many water lilies that I end up composting 8 to 10 of them each fall when we remove the pump for the winter. I have tried trading but haven't received much interest. I hate to offer for postage because I have been stiffed several times this summer.
So sorry to hear you have more than you can keep. What do you do with them over winter? Do you keep any inside? I had a lotus before the one I was trying to start at the pond cabin. I had it in a black barrel and it was already blooming when purchased. I tried to over winter it by wrapping the barrel in insulation and putting wire over the top and more insulation but alas that didn't save it.
Oh, you are overrun by them, they are lovely. The one leaf looks like there is a tiny turtle on it? How large is your pool? What colors do you have? Let's see more please!
How cute is that little frog? Now don't try kissin it, never trusted that story!
Your pond is gorgeous and lucky you with that astillbe. I have many astillbe and have moved them and nutured them for years and barely get a bloom. Yours if lovely.
Here is a little something for one of the tables now that my dahlias are coming as well as your zinnia donations!
Hi everyone,
Nice colourful flowers Sue, Thanks for the loan of the cool cabinet, it looks great in the cafe. Please may we keep it?LoL! The other arrangement with the mother in laws tongue has lasted a very long time!!!
Mittsy, your water lilies are really gorgeous. Have you ever tried drying them? Your pond looks lovely with all the wild life and plants. Don't know what water lilies smell like.
Candee, missed ya! Did you have a good weekend?
Here's a little pot of fragrant sweet peas for the new cabinet.
Oh I got the red 'while you were typing' message, so I'll be back in to look at your arrangement Candee!
Very cool Terri. I especially like the pineapple lily one, it looks very mod and I like that!
I tell you the way that lucifer looks on the cabinet I believe Sue is gonna be hard pressed to get it back. She probably should not have brought it in here cause my philosophy is that possession is 9/10 of the law and we got it! She may have to find another for her lovely home!
Notice I had to call it lucifer and not crocosmia cause I am trying to imbed it into my brain!
Aren't they beautiful, I always confuse them with freesias. Last fall I rec'd some nois iris in a monthly swap. Today they are blooming LA iris Black Gamecock, does anyone have these? Are the flowers supposed to bloom so low to the ground?
Can you post the pics of them mittsy, don't know without seeing. They are similar to freesias. I had those one year, quite pretty and fragrant, haven't done them in the past couple.
Don't have any, but wish I did now that I see yours and especially in such a clean setting, nicely mulched, room to spread and no weeds, doesn't get any better than that!
When we visited Germany we went to a local monastery for dinner. The four of us drank 2 bottles of wine. I loved those dark green bottles and brought them back to our room at the inn. They were just perfect for rooting cuttings. The next day we went out sightseeing and when we returned my bottles were GONE! The maid thought we had drunk them in the room and that they were to be thrown out, which she did. I've so regretted not putting them in my suitcase.
Thank you Dianne, that is a very sweet concoction you have provided for us.
Terri, I will have to wait until the weekend to try yours as it looks very potent, can't be having that and then trying to get to work in the morn.
Mittsy, sorry to hear that you lost your bottles especially after working so hard to get them empty.
You have the most well kept bar in this place Terri. What is that bottle on the far right bottom? It all looks so inviting.
Haven't heard mentioned so will ask. Did we ever get proper zoning so that we could have a sidewalk cafe at the cafe. You know, just a table or two so we can enjoy the outdoors. I am not sure the authorities would allow an outdoor patio out back and not sure we have sufficient funds to build that, but at least for now it would be nice to have the sidewalk cafe? Does anyone know where we are with that project or is this the first mention of it?
Got a new catalog yesterday and was looking at it and after seeing so many beaitufl arrangements thought I might give Alstromia a try for next year. They have this one series of cultivars that are supposed to be good for pot production and are shorter. Think they might work for folks to put in the ground or use as cut flowers?
I can't belive I am thinking about next year when things have been so bad these past two years with no rain, but there always hope that things will change.
Always need to have hope and things do change Star. I was thinking about next year as soon as this season began, always good to plan ahead.
Star - I don't see why you can't grow transplant those shorter cultivars into the ground, especially if they are the intermediate height ones. I have grown a variety of alstromerias, and found that there are some that just do not do well, and are not robust enough. The stems are wimpy and are too short to use as cut flowers. Unfortunately, I don't remember the names of the ones that were not successful. BUT, once you find a variety that works, it will continue to spread and give you months of cut flowers. So, I am with Candee. Go for it!!
Very inviting, Terri. Is that the Russian vine? That seems to be such a versatile plant to use in arrangements. It is a pity that it needs so much room. Less than a month before I leave for Europe, so I will bring my travel brochures to read out in the patio while eating the fresh homemade ice cream. Yummmmm....
