Terri, now what are courgettes? I never heard of them. I'll be glad to share the zucchini recipe. Star now you shouldn't be eatin the whole loaf yourself LOL. Guess you put those flower magazines to good use!
I used to have some little hardy carnations in my garden, don't know what happened to them and don't recall they ever bloomed more than once a season.
The FLOWERPOT Cafe' XI
Hi all, courgettes are Zuchinni by another name Candee. We call them courgettes in NZ, but Zuchinni in Aussie, go figure!
Hi Star, the little Carnations are called Dianthus, or 'pinks' I think. I'm not sure if you can grow them from cuttings, as you can with the big ones, but why not give it a go anyway?
I would love a recipe for zuchinni/courgette bread! I've never eaten it, and now I've heard of it, I want it!
I'm looking forward to your photos of Longwood Candee!
Hi Mittsy, love the tiger! I haven't been to an exotic zoo for ages, but did visit the Crocodile park in Cairns, which had lots of Native Australian animals, birds and reptiles. No tigers though! LOL
Well, short visit I know, only had time for a quick chat, a sip of tea and a bite of candees Bread! Yummm.
See you next time, at the Flower cafe!
Sue
Sue, I'll be happy to give the recipe when I get home, it is scrumptious. Thanks for the courgette/zuchinni lesson.
Star as for the carnations, I have had those minature ones and they are different from dianthus.
I found this photo of mine from 2002, they thrived for two seasons and then I must have accidentally yanked or sprayed it. It was just a very small plant and the flowers were about 1" in diameter.

elle.. Congrats on getting your completed. You can box it up and send it to me now. LOL ( just kidding) ; )
Looks real good. Ya did a good job.
Zuchinni breads are very popular here in California since you get tons of them from just a few plants. Never heard of them referred to as courgettes before - learn something new everyday!! My mom had some carnation plants in her yard for a few years, but they died off fairly quickly. I have not really seen any of the "florist" quality ones growing in the yards in my area. Mittsy - just went to your thread on the vacation site. Lovely photos of the place. Cute granddaughter too!
Hi everyone!
Well done elle! You did a great job, it looked really hard to make and he looks really cute.
Now I'm wondering what you call courgettes when they get really big, they are marrow right? or do you call that something different too?LoL!
Star, I cut the blooms off carnations and they keep flowering. I have some plants that have gone leggy so I'm going to take all the sideshoots off and grow them on in the greenhouse. Hopefully will have lots more carnations next year.
Thanks for posting about your river cruise Mittsy, I'll go and have a look.
Haighr and Terry. Thanks for the information on the carnations. I gonan figure out how to grow them here yet if it kills me. : ) Terry how do you overwinter yours in a greenhouse?
I don't know. when a zuchinni gets to big here it called " throw in the trash" or use it in a soup. ; )
Hi Star, I am hoping that the carnations will have rooted before winter comes. I don't heat the greenhouse, they should survive being perrenials.
Stuffed marrow roasted with a honey glaze is quite nice!
mmmmm, stuffed marrow, I love that. We put a meatloaf mix inside and roast it, is that what you do terri?
Elle, love the puppy! How did you do it?
I'm off to the Vacation forum (didn't know there was one) to look at mittsys thread.

Sue
Terri, that's it just like the carnation plant I had only yours a lovely red. Mine did come back a couple years, but think the round up got it in one of my weak moments LOL!
Elle, that is fabulous, you did a great job, I could take him for a walk around the neighborhood! What did you use for a base to put it together?
Mittsy, hope you don't mind, I've attached the link for you. Now I am off to take a look.

Oops, forgot about the zucchini recipe, will make myself a note.
Sue would love to see your meatloaf concoction - do you hollow out the zucchini and then stuff with the meatloaf?
Hi Sue, Yes thats what I mean! I usually make it with sage and onion stuffing with fresh breadcrumbs or stuff it with rice and other veggies. Being vegetarian!
I liked the arrangement you posted at the 'other' cafe. LoL! I don't remember seeing that one before.
Hi Candee, It's a warm day here, not as hot as your temps though! Do we have any ice cream?
Elle, your puppy is so good and all the cafe crowd love it! I have seen passers by stopping to admire your puppy in the window. Thanks for bringing it in.
i took it to work
which i work in a nuring home
they all love it
some of the help want to know how much it sell
for
it cost me 9 dollar to make
so it would go for 20.00
elle
Thats a bargain Elle, I can only imagine the amount of work that goes into something like that.
Still not getting the meatloaf thing. Do you remove the zucchini and insert the meatloaf?
the meatloaf sound good to me
how do you do it
elle
Yeah, we want the meatloaf recipe. DETAILS, DETAILS!!! Sorry, didn't mean to shout.
please give us the recipe with step by step instructions.
Yeah, thanks for hollering mittsy, that will get their attention. And I am going to try to post the bread recipe when I get home as well. We'll all be bringing leftovers to the cafe! Well if there are any leftovers.
I have a lovely crop of peas, I keep thinking I should gather them and freeze but my 2 year old granddaughter loves them so we have been eating them ala carte as they fill their little pods. My daughter has taught her some sign language and she is just so cute when she signs for more, more.
Oh yes, I know what you mean mittsy. Steve and I have 2 deaf children and they are grown and we seldom see them in CA and have lost a lot of our signing ability. But, that baby genius stuff they sell really inspires parents to start their children signing at a young age. Our DIL has taught Eva some and she would put her little fists together asking for more, more.
So nice that she loves her fresh veggies at her age. Do you get to see her often? Our little Eva Grace is 2 and way out in Ohio and Abygail Grace is 18 months and she is down on the eastern shore about 4 hours away.
We rarely see our grandchildren. Our daughter lives in Vero Beach, FL and our son lives in Whitesville, KY. After 9/11 they decided that they would keep in touch by spending Thanksgiving together, alternating FL and KY. We travel to wherever it is being held. Our youngest son has no children, so we have four grandchildren and two Shiloh shepherd granddogs. Our grandbaby is 23 months old and is Hannah Grace.
Oh my another beautiful Grace. How old are your other grandchildren? girls, boys? We just have one granddog, cocker spaniel, he's a trip!
Taylor (she) is 13, Jonathan is 12 and Jarrod is 9. Jonathan is my gardener.
Sorry to interupt your lovely conversation, but I heard all the yelling and thought it was of extreme importance that I relate the Stuffed marrow method! First cut off one end of the marrow/large zuchinni/large courgette, and set aside, then you remove the inside, (as it has quite big seeds in it). Then fill with your choice of stuffing, replace the end and secure with toothpicks, then bake for the usual time (medium oven, 60-90 mins)
Yummmmm!
I have trouble growing them here, because the humidity causes mildew and affects the health of the plant. I've done the spray milk and water method, but its a losing battle. I do get a couple of small zuchinni a week though, through late summer.
O.k, well back to your conversation. I've got two other kids too.
Lily and Leo
Oh Sue, the dogs won't let me in!
Oh Sue that is too cute. Thanks so much for the instruction, so I could do that with a large zucchini? Will have to work on that. Kinda like a sideways stuffed pepper.
Sounds like you have some great helpers there mittsy. Could I borrow them one afternoon?
Here is a little somethin for that table, now if Terri can get it past the pups great, I am not going to risk it!
Hi candee, I'm still outside the cafe! everytime I try to go in they growl at me.
Love your tuti fruti ice cream, it's gorgeous! I'm thinking of setting up a stall in the car park!
Do you think you could lure them away with a steak? Can't you sneak around to the back kitchen door and grab something they might like? As creative as you are surely you can overcome this obstacle? I have another arrangement that needs to go in as this heat is going to make it wilt if you stand out there all day!
And this is a thrown together vase full of rose of sharon in water and cones and eaves from the hymenocallis ismene.
Oh, that arrangement is sooooo pretty! love the yellows and purples with white. You have been busy this evening!
The 2nd picture does not show.
Just have to wait 24 hours for Sue to come back LoL!
I remembered the bread recipe:
Freezes well so make several at a time.
2 cups grated zucchini drained
3 eggs
1 cup oil
2 cups sugar
3 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp baking powder
3 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp grated orange peel (optional)
chopped walnuts
1 Peel zucchini and grate in food processor. Drain off excess water, set aside
2 Beat eggs, oil, sugar and vanilla; add zucchini
3 Combine dry ingredients, add slowly to mix, beat until well blended.
4 Add nuts.
5 Pour into 2 greased an floured pans.
6 Bake at 350 degrees for 1hr. 10minutes, until toothpick comes out clean.
Yield: 2 loaves
Thanks Terri, so you are telling me you are afraid of the big dogs LOL! I am sure you can coerce them away with something.
yep, v v v v very afraid! LoL!
Thanks for the recipe , it sound delicious. I thought it was a savoury bread haha!
I'm quickly making a note of the ingredients from outside! another lovely arrangement I see through the window.
Candee - I am so envious of your gladiolus. They are great in your arrangements. My hymenocallis ismene is finally blooming!! I remember yours were blooming about a month ago. Sue - I had a standard black poodle who used to keep me company in the garden all the time. You have great company there.
I tell you Dianne, I think sometimes they are more trouble than they are worth. I try to keep them staked up but they have a mind of their own and I end up cutting a lot of them because of snapping.
Would love to see your ismene. Are yours planted in the garden? I have to take mine in each season so it is a chore removing the tubers, cleaning and drying and then store in the basement.
Thanks Terri, glad you peeked in although I don't even remember putting them in there, must have been when they were napping and I tiptoed by them unnoticed!
Here is the link over the the trip to Longwood Gardens for anyone who may be interested.
