My day started with a mission of mercy, and a happy ending to the story.
When I let the Irish Setters out, they expressed a great deal of interest in a patch of poison oak just on the other side of the fence. There'd been a crew of workers there, pointing, just moments before. Suspecting a baby Bullocks Oriole, because there was a nest overhead in a big oak, I went looking. Sure enough! Had I left it there and it didn't come through the fence for the dogs to get, the Scrub Jays would have ended things for this little babe.
The nest is about 15 feet above the roadway, on an outer branch. Too high for a step ladder, and there's nothing on which to brace an extension. The only thing around that was high enough to get babe back in the nest safely was the work crews truck. I spoke with them, and they agreed to stop under the tree on the way out.
While waiting, babe had a huge meal of sowbugs, with no competition.
The fellow that replaced babe in the nest even asked for a towel to handle babe, since he had gasoline on his hands. Right after babe was returned, mom was looking on the ground where she'd last seen babe. Imagine her surprise when she found it safely tucked it w/ the two siblings!

And by the sound of things, you might babe's brother or sister down there tomorrow...looking for similar "treats"...nice pic.
Bird baby looks like hunch-back from Nottredam (spelling sorry!)
Wonderful pics tiger!
Thanks for starting the new thread!
Tigerlily, I'm so glad you saved babe -- what a cutie!
I made a stink last week when the tree contractor for Centerpoint Energy came to cut the trees. They claim that they have to prune year round, but I didn't see any pruning happening in the winter months when it would be approrpriate for the trees and the birds. I also received plenty of flyers from tree trimmers looking for work in the winter. I say contract with more companies and do it in the winter! They 'trimmed' which often meant topping trees for several blocks. I can't imagine how many baby birds were killed.
Here's a baby blue jay in the bamboo in the easement. The bamboo is dying from lack of rain.
There should be laws against trimming in the nesting season. I hate to even remove brush on my place without a pretty thorough inspection. Reading trois' post the other day about the destruction of the nest area (rookery?) of the Little Blue Heron really upset and irritated me.
The crew with the big truck that helped me rescue the Bullock's babe was gathering and crushing metal for salvage. Blessings to them! When they left with a full load today, it was piled high, about 2 feet above the top. After they cautiously drove under the tree holding the nest, they stopped and walked back to see if all was well. I was particulary impressed, because the workers are all fairly young men.
tigerlily, what a fantastic job you did to rescue that darling little bird. Weren't the workmen wonderful? I'm in complete agreement about disrupting the environment in any way in times of high activity for birds or indeed any native fauna.
