f_chisolm, here's a female with 3 babies, two I can see are males and possibly the 3rd, you can see the faint grey on the head.

I might be wrong, but I thought these looked like females with the male, their general colouring looks paler.

adelbertcat, I think the Jays must have a private cactus patch close by.

You sure have a wide range of visitors, nanny. Nice shots

Very overcast when I was out early, so the pics aren't great. Here is a Red-Bellied Woodpecker and it's baby.

Hi Wallaby,

Quoting:
have you noticed the male House Sparrow feeds the female young, while mom feeds the males?
Checked up in my books, there's no difference between male and female House Sparrows in juvenile plumage. I wonder if it's an optical illusion, the chicks look drab compared to a bright male, but look bright compared to a dull female??

Hi Resin, that could be so but they do look different to me, and I have seen the male with what looks like female young more than once. I don't see the female with young the same, but then after a short time she's usually off making another lot! The lot she was feeding look fresh out of the nest. Books don't know everything, and it could be like humans, takes a female to see the difference, lol.

I got this yesterday of the House Martin, day before there was egg shell removal so they have hatched! Got a couple of pics with shell in beak too in duller conditions..

It was on the 1st actually, here one is coming out the nest with some shell. It looks to have a dark bit attached, either one which didn't develop or the egg sac?

I thought it was droppings for a start, but you can see the shell.

Coming out with the next egg shell piece, this was 40 minutes later.

Some of those might be shell fragments, but I think the first pix are fecal sack.

You people and your clear beautiful photos! I feel I must share my special talent of taking a photo where absolutely nothing is in focus! Baby Blue Jay preening with sibling who is behind the crepe myrtle flower. Frankly, it's amazing there are still flowers as a squirrel has been busy eating the buds off of this tree all day.
