Garden Photos - Part 17

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just for laughs I Googled "Wild Verbascum" and got the usual Mullin yellow but there were some others with pointed leaves and pinkish white flowers. I think this plant is wild, so it's planted with the Anthemis ,let 'em go crazy.

i know poke has to be boiled multiple times to make it safe to eat, but it is not uncommon in the South, particularly.

ehhh - I don't think I would eat it unless I was very very hungry.

Chuck, do you still see many labybugs, butterflies, bees, etc.? Those sprays can do a number on them.

Marlborough, MA(Zone 5b)

Victor, I get tons of bumble bees, ladybugs in the fall, never had meny butterflies. Honeybees are few and far between anywhere around our area. Did see a few at N.E. Wildflower gradens. I understand what spraying can do but I'm not going to lose that weeping cherry to a bunch of hungry caterpillers. It is too big and too old.

Try BT instead.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

with the wet land in my backyard - the fireflies light up the backyard like the 4th of july.

Does anyone know why the "light up"?

I do - curious if others do.

I will guess - It is their heart beating. Oh come after me oh I am over here Come on honey :-)

OK really serious without googling I dont know. I would say to emitt a scent to keep from being attacked.

I looked up lightning bugs the other day because I wanted to find out if bats eat them( it's didn't specify just that they eat insects and about 3000 mosquitos a night). "Flashing Lightning Bugs are trying to attract mates. Among most but not all species of North American Lightning Bugs, males fly about flashing while females perch on vegetation, usually near the ground. If the female sees a flasher and she's ready to mate she responds by flashing right after the male's last flash. A short flash dialogue takes place as the male flies closer and closer, and then, if all goes well, they mate."

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Very good - when i look into my yard and see them flashing i always think to myself there is a lot more going on than meets the eye. very busy backyard based on the number of flashes. have to watch for how close they are - did not know that piece of info.

Holy cow I was right. I swear I did not look it up.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Aren't male flashers in peril of being arrested?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Wow Victor - you were "Bloom of the Day"on June13th and the 22nd! Congratulations....

I stepped in the garden good luck doo doo again! Yippee...

I was at the Christmas Tree Store (CTS for short), originally I was looking for the paper mulch rolls that they had for $4.99 (measured 3'x50'). After the stone is FINALLY delivered, I planned on using the paper mulch, and then adding a soil mix on top prior to planting. Well, didn't find the rolls of paper mulch, but did get 2-light weight ceramic planters that were $1 each...they announced it right after I was looking at their .05c bulb bag sale...I happened to be standing right next to the rack that they were putting these pots; I also picked up 20 packs of Gladiolas...20 packs with about 20-30 glads in each, for $1!

Here are the pots:

Those planters were only $1!!!!!!!!!! I wish I could find some deals like that.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Yep. $1 each. There are some small cracks/chips in the lip, but for $1...I don't care...lol.

Geez Thom..what a find!! I'm going to check out my CTS in the morning!!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

wow!
And here i've been looking for planters-to-be at Goodwill. You definitely got a better deal.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's beyond a steal, Thom! Real ceramic too?

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Anita, that Pokeweed has a large root that must be removed or it will come back.
Pokeweed is edible if picked when young, it's a Southern thing. I would have tried it, lol. "Eat a weed?" Most of our food started out as a weed.
Chuck, I spray my fruit trees in spring for many pests but only the trees and only in spring (and once in summer) BT works fine. All the other gardens are chemical free. (But that's another story.) I don't suppose you get many bug shots.

Need to edit...just looked at the tag for the planters...they are actually cement. So, even better.

They had 4 or 5 different colors (all brown, tan, terra cotta'ish) and different styles.

I'm probably gonna seal them with Thompson's at the end of the season...should have done that now, but don't have any extra sealer on hand :-/

I have a Christmas Tree Shop near me I wonder if it's the same thing? Reminded me that my friend said they don't just sell Christmas things.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks everyone. I actually think I like the pokeweed. It's different and adds structure and height. I guess if it gets invasive, I will eradicate it.

Hey Andy!! Nice to see you.

Celeste and Arlene, when I see daylillies, I think of you two. Here's a NOID for you.
