Glad you got in touch with Debbie, and was able to answer all your questions...we are lucky to have a person like her to buy from..one time I wanted 4 plants she said for me to wait till the roots get bigger..its not all about the money with her it's plants she is proud to send!!I did talk her into them and they was huge!!!

Thanks Dan for the pics..can't wait to see them loaded with your Clematis and Roses, party time! :)
now mocatmom can show her hubby how it's done!!!

Driftwood, TX(Zone 8b)

Shihtzumom, did you get your order in yet?

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

See I was looking out for you mocatmom...you gotta show us pics.of yours too!!hope your emergency was taken care of...what new clematis did you get??mine is Candida,Ashva,Bourbon and Josephine...

Think Kathys busy packing her bulb co-op...

Delaware, OH

blissful, this is great to have my gut instinct and off hand knowledge verified and also the detail that really explains the price difference by the age of the roots.
silver star is a valuable resource in info as well as roots!

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

mocatmom....did you get any made???when you do please post pics.

Yes CG Debbie is and so are you!

Driftwood, TX(Zone 8b)

Sorry to be so long in getting back to you - we had some more school closings today and things have been hectic trying to round up some help for parents. Back to more pleasant things...

Demstratt - No trellises made yet, but I'm going to sketch some out tomorrow based on the ideas Diamond123 posted (Bless you, Diamond! - but how did you get that Easter Island monolith in your yard???). The first two will be the copper ones, and I will post pics when they're completed.

I got Rhapsody and Princess Diana from Debbie today - thank goodness the temps here were still moderate, because they had to sit and wait on me for a few hours. They are in perfect shape, though, and are happily planted (my husband held the flashlight).

It sounds like you have some real beauties - I have Bourbon, but no blooms yet - I can't wait. You said Kathy was busy with her bulb coop - I need to remember to have her explain to me how those things work - I never participated in one.

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm here. The coops are were can purchase large quantities of plants, bulbs, etc and get a cheaper price. A random example is the Tall Phlox coop that I'm doing now. I contacted Blooming bulb to see how many of the varieties I want would be available so I don't over sell. I get a reply that they have 100 of David, 50 of Starfire, 90 of Blue Boy. So I start the ORDER thread and list all the info for pricing, shipping to me, shipping from me to you, etc. I have learned to have a team helping me. Patrob always does my spreadsheets and Chris_lcf helps with back up on conversations no the threads and over looks and compares with Patrob to make sure the numbers/orders are right. When we reach the numbers available or the cut off date Patrob posts the orders, members view for accuracy and payments are sent to me. I pay Bloomingbulb and they ship to me. I get Priority boxes free from the Postal Service. I count the items when they arrive, pack them with a packing slip I make and print labels from the clickNship on USPS.com and pay for the shipping. Out they go -

That is a very quick overview. The moral is to get a bulb or plant for a fraction of what one would cost if I got 1 verses 100.

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

I received my order from Silver Star Vinery and I just have to tell everyone what wonderful plants I received. They are HUGE!!

I could be wrong but I think last year she shipped three to a box. No way this year, you could only squeeze two of these monsters in one box. Packed with loving care also!! Debbie you and your nursery rock!!

I read an article from a master gardner just recently and it was all about mail order clematis. She could not stress enough for the new gardener to buy the biggest plants you could afford, and expect to pay around 20 bucks a plant. Most losses are from small straggley plants. I couldn't agree more. I to, have losses from smaller plants. But having said that, I do have some smaller cheaper ones comming, but I'm not a new gardener and will baby them along. If I lose any of these smaller ones. I'll be kicking myself in the butt.

If you want a first rate clematis with a huge root structure. You MUST buy from Silver Star Vinery

Now back to our regular programing.

Delaware, OH

diamond you are on the right page for a successful clem garden, faster and more satisfaction and results.....it is so wonderful receiving those results vs little rootlet liners from other no grower sources. so worth the extra $.
enjoy and post the beautiful results to us eventually!

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

Another month and we will both be taking pictures of our gardens.

We had rain today so no planting done. I will try to get them in the ground Friday or Saturday.

Seems like this is the week all the co-op orders are coming in. A box everyday on my porch! I have to admit, that's part of the fun of these co-ops, coming home and finding your plants waiting.

Speaking of pictures, now would be a good time to snap a bunch of "before" pictures of the garden.
We are starting to green up pretty good now, I love this time of the year. Everyday you see growth by leaps and bounds.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey Dan planting in the rain is fun!!!I did all day...all my orders are coming in from co-ops and other places some I forgot about ordering..

My order from Debbie won't ship till next Monday..that gives me time to get my holes ready...

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

I did work a little in the rain, didn't like it. The plants will wait.

How many did you order from Debbie?

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I'm getting 4...getting the Bourbon one that you got, liked that one...Did you get Princess Diana???she's blooming now plus loaded with buds....got Prince Charles next to her...

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Ohh yeah,plus Josephine,Candida and Ashva..

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

yep I'm doing the prince charles and princess diana clematis together thing. I just can't figure which rose to put them with. Most likely a pink one, maybe an Austin. I could do either Heritage or Eglantyne both are going on two to three years old and have trellis's. How big does your princess diane get?

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Do a white rose with them that would really look good...you putting them in your front or backyard???

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

I do have this white climber available with no clematis yet. It will be 3 years old this summer. It's in the back yard at the top of the hill against the white vinyl fence with it's own trellis. That's definately a thought. thanks

Have been lurking and enjoying all the interesting discussion, especially about pairing up clematis with others and roses, etc.

Also wanted you all to know you are Enablers and have caused me to break my promise NOT to buy anything new this spring!

I just got my confirmation from the famous "Debbie" that my six vines will be sent out May 3!

I look forward to seeing all your promised photos later this spring, guru!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

love the idea of growing clematis on the tree trunk I have eight foot lenghts of eight inch branches I think I will cement one into the grown and plant two clematis with colors that look good together cant wait

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I don't think I have him...I'm like Kathy,we name ours pink,blue,white & etc.I know that up on her railing is Prince Charles,she don't know!!!LOL...

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Ohhh that sounds nice..I have Princess Diana climbing up a weeping cheery..I keep the tree trimmed like a big umbrella...I have 4 P.D.shes my favorite..

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

Tobasco, we are professional enablers with Journyman cards! And you soon will be too. You will get so many Ideas from these forums. We have some of the best gardeners in the world on this site. I steal their idea's on a regular basis and you should too. Besides that, promises were made to be broken. So I hear.

Loretta do you have them (all four P.D.) together in one spot?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

that is why we are all here to get info from each other and trade seeds for stuff that we cant get anywhere else and there is always someone that has the answer to every question possible when it comes to gardening and growing any plant that any of us can think of

it is an amazing site I thought I knew so much about gardening until I came here and met people that know so much more know I know more also its great

I love the way that there is a thread for each subject so info is easy to get

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

I think if you are going to do some pairing it might be a good idea to try and keep the pruning types the same. Maybe a 2 and a 3, but I don't think a one and three would be a good idea. ClematisGuru could jump in here and give you some better advise I think.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

No not in one spot 2 in the front yard and 2 in the back..once you see how much she blooms you will want more!!

Mona can you buy from the US???or do you have to go through a broker???yeah its fun...we love the co-ops too, well most of them...

Delaware, OH

if you have room for one or two you have room for 3 or 4. consider group 3's and consider two each, of two kinds.
when you plant perennials, clematis is the only type people do not buy several of. they buy one of each variety and expect fast coverage.
if you loved day lillies or phlox and wanted to make a display you would not start with one plant. you would start with 3 or 5 and then let maturity make it even better.
we expect a lot of the amazing clem root. it gives a lot, but to have a nice display in the first few years, plant the largest roots you can afford, and put several of them in.

from some of the photos i have seen lately of princess diana, and comments here i would strongly think about a combo of that with prince charles or perle de azure, which may establish more quickly than prince charles. prince charles seems to bloom lower (all thru the vine for me vs perle de azure)
this is prince charles and etoile rose, very similar to diana. then i will post perle de azure so can see what i am talking about in the bloom coverage. this price charles is one plant but it is 8 yrs old. the etoile rose is also in ground for me for quite a few years..

here is perle de azure. i do not get bloom coverage as low. both this clem and prince charles are breathtaking shades of baby blueish lavendar, very floriferous. this arch is now underplanted with josephine, henrii for earlier blooms than perle and also HF Young , but they do not all bloom at once.
it is easy to treat the josephine and henrii differently than the others as far as pruning in this zone.
the other clems were put into the group over last summer so this year we will have some photos of the others here.

I have so missed the blooms of clematis couldnt take my babies when I moved so had to start over last year so mine are still small since I am to cheap to buy the large ones

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Clematis fanatics, thanks for all the tips.

Maybe a Thread for just 'pairing ideas' would be good? (Or a stcky thread, even)I know I checked out a Library book by an english gentlemen last year that featured lots of splendid photos of good pairings and then he explained why they worked. Now I can't remember the title or what it looked like.

So much detail involved with clems. What guru says is so true. People just buy one clem and think that should suffice for the garden.

I'd hate for all these details to get lost amongst all the other general chat.

Take care. t.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

at my last home I had them all around the back yard so I would not have to look at the wooden fence I alternated blooming times so there was always lots of flowers

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

My new order arrived from Silver Star. I will post pictures this weekend. I didn't have time to load them before work.

I have:

Edouard Desfoss (she only had 4 and I was lucky to get 1 and she's keeping the others) This is hard to find, so I understand
Purple Spider
Rhapsody
Claire De Lune
Prince Charles

Stunning roots as always. I have a baby clem in the bunch to see what I can do with it. A seedling. We want to know what my rich soil will do for it.

Baton Rouge, LA

Tabasco, you might be thinking of "The Rose and the Clematis as Good Companions," by Dr. John Howell. I checked it out from our library a few weeks ago and it was busting with info. Unfortunately, quite a few of the suggested roses are not ones that can be found in the U.S., but you can substitute with similar types.

Another book that I found to be a nice short reference on pairings, with shrubs, roses and other clematis, is the small little guide by the American Horticultural Society, "Clematis".

I've been compiling pairings from other DG'ers as I've noticed them in threads. We also had a thread earlier that specifically discussed suggested pairings of clems with roses or other clems. While the list was created to find cultivars that could "take the heat," it includes many clems that are widely grown throughout the U.S. Here's a link:

actually some companies there is no broker they have warehouses in canada and ship from there so it is cheaper and easier for the company to export in bulk all the large ones do it and walmart and home depot carry the stuff also if it can grow in my zone or annuals I can get everything you can for the same zone

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I see my friend sells stuff in up state N.Y.and she has to have a broker!

Lucky you Kathy getting one of her special clematis and the test plant...does it have a name??

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I try to buy locally from the small guys first and if I dont find what I want then I will go everywhere or anywhere to get the plant I want yesterday I picked up and pink poodle echi, and a tomato soup echi both will bloom this year I hope

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I just got my tomato soup from a co-op here..yess they will bloom this year!!!

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

The baby is Spider so I'm anxious to see what I can do with the little guy. It's really about the size that Lowes sells in the 4 in pot with roots TONS larger. I started a new thread with that same post above so maybe I could post my pictures later today and stay a new thread for my silver star plants and we can gather Dan's info on trellis too.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Ohh yeah I love the trellises...I wonder if mocatmom has her hubby building her some now!!did you get any done????Gotta go see the new thread, this one is interesting too!!!
